"Holoscene full of promise"

How good are Holoscene? So good that their debut EP, Nothing Is The End of Everything, has made me rethink my feelings towards post-rock as a whole. I used to think I disliked all post-rock; now I realize (after enjoying both this and the latest album from As The Poets Affirm just last week) that it's just bad post-rock I don't like.

It's not that they do anything drastically different from most other bands of the genre. After all, throw in some nonsense vocals and they'd basically be Toronto's answer to Sigur Rós. It's just that -- like Do Make Say Think or Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky or any other band that's mastered the style -- they're able to shift tempos and volumes so well that they make what they do sound transcendent. There's a slight misstep near the beginning of the album, on "The Fourth of January", when they throw in some vocals, but, thankfully, they're so deep in the mix that you have to have the volume cranked up to notice. After that, the album gets on track pretty quickly, and by the time the album climaxes with "Floes", it doesn't seem like a stretch to imagine Nothing Is The End of Everything making Holoscene one of the biggest post-rock bands in the world. - i (heart) music

Holoscene is an avant-garde instrumental band based in Toronto, Canada. Their sound combines orchestral-rock percussion, distorted bass guitar and open-tuned guitars to form pieces of sequentially structured wordless music. Themes in their music revolve around purposeful ambiguity, the natural world and the numinous.

Formed in 2006 the band developed their sound during the making of their first EP "Nothing Is The End Of Everything" (currently available in North America and scheduled for release in Europe in 2008). Straddling an area of music most commonly known as "post-rock" due to its instrumental nature, Holoscene are hard to pin down to any one specific genre and have had their sound described as cinematic, ambient, industrial, post-metal, and orchestral-rock. The British writer Warren Ellis has described their music as "transcendental etudes", whilst the band members themselves refuse to rule anything out.

In 2008 Holoscene’s noted performances will be at NXNE Festival on Saturday June 14th in Toronto, and in New York on Saturday August 9th with the Jack String Quartet at Le Poisson Rouge in Greenwich Village.

The band is currently working on a split 7" vinyl with Tunturia, with artwork created by Seldon Hunt, set for release this summer. Holoscene is also writing material for their debut album.
