"Honey the Hippie’s Bars Will Melt Your Mind"

Houston has been a hotbed for hip hop for quite sometime, exporting a number of popular modern trends and giving us an insane array of stars, from UGK to DJ Screw, and even Riff Raff. Its latest product, is a nineteen year old Nigerian emigrate, who not only brings with her a bag of psychedelics, but fierce rhymes and an endless barrage of quotable lines. Honey the Hippie is not as peaceful as the social movement she derives her name from, rather she is a competitive emcee, who is ready to break forth from the underground and hold the rap game hostage. Take whatever stereotypes you have about female rappers and throw them out the window; guaranteed she breaks from all of those overused connotations.

Her mixtape, Peace of Mind, has received considerable attention on Datpiff, and has given us two incredible singles. “Psychedelics” is showcases her ability to full out spit, as she attempts to break down the production will with her heavy handed rhyme schemes. It is a more traditional video that finds her solo mobbing around her city, eating at an oriental restaurant and in front of graffiti covered wall. “Ride” is goes further to the left, as she is raps over a spacey/R&B style beat and has Tee sing a softer hook. It is an interesting track that definitely shows off how unique she can be, while keeping her vision truly cohesive. - The Source

"Introducing Honey The Hippie to the A&R Report. Honey The Hippie, born in Detroit, raised in Central Florida, and currently residing in Houston, TX, came about her stage name from the meaning of her birth name Oyinkansola, meaning “sweet like honey” in Yoruba. After winning a handful of national poetry completions since the age of 12, she decided to take her poetry writing to the next level. At 16 years old, she began writing raps to popular instrumentals, with no intentions of sharing these lyrics with anyone...." - A&R Report

"Honey The Hippie – Peace Of Mind [Mixtape]"

Honey The Hippie has been on my radar for a lil over a year now. A young girl from Texas was spitting over some industry beats on youtube and it caught my attention. I immediately fell in love with her New God Flow Freestyle where she comes off as a poet first but has a genuine love for the emcee. Since her 1st youtube video she has put out many freestyles and now has released her 1st mixtape. It doesn’t seem mixed or mastered but this 18 year old clearly has a passion and she needs our support. Lets all listen to her Peace of Mind project and get familiar with Honey The Hippie. - The STA blog

"Honey the Hippie – Overthinking & Overdosing [Prod by TeeJ]"

Honey the Hippie is an 18 year old female emcee from Texas and she sent over the video to Psychedelic from her Peace of Mind mixtape. Between this one and her other single “Overthinking & Overdosing” track, she may be on to something. I haven’t heard this mixtape yet but from these two it sounds like it might be worth checking out. She definitely has a name you cannot forget. - Dead End Hip Hop

"Video: Honey The Hippie “Psychedelic”"

“Psychedelic” is Honey The Hippie’s first official music video which is directed by Devin Campbell and produced by Evan Turner. I really enjoy this video essentially because she seems to be genuinely happy with what she is doing. The video just gives off good vibes and at the same time Honey The Hippie is dispensing commendable verses to portray that she is not to be messed with. This whole “Psychedelic”, Hippie, #TrippyTribe that she is promoting does not seem to be gimmick. This is truly who she is. In a Hip-hop scene that is dominated by male MC’s we will see how Honey The Hippie plans to hold her ground. That plan starts May 29th when she releases her first mixtape “Peace Of Mind”. - Skreet Chemistry

"Eyes Closed, Ears Open -Honey The Hippie-"

Upon hearing Honey's single "Psychedelic" off of her debut mixtape Peace Of Mind, I instantly could feel the positive vibes. Today you don't find many femcees who are speaking their mind and not rapping about their assets or embracing the "sex sells" phrase. But, Honey The Hippie is embracing herself and positivity.

Honey The Hippie, born in Detroit, raised in Central Florida, and currently residing in Houston, TX came about her stage name from the meaning of her birth name Oyinkansola meaning "sweet like honey" in Yoruba. She has had a passion for music for as long as she can remember, wanting to be a singer since kindergarten and receiving her first solo when she was 7 years old. Being in love with the hippie era is where the Hippie in her name is added. Stating that "If I could live in any year, it would be 1969. The music was great, the people were peaceful and the fashion was so flawless. I've always considered myself a modern hippie." With her favorite artist being Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Tupac Shakur, and Bob Marley, Honey is inspired by ambitious individual, the grind and hard work of these type of individuals inspires her to keep chasing her dreams. With writing being her passion, but not only music, she dabbles in screen plays and short stories, Honey says that she is the kind of student who enjoys ten-paged college papers.
When asked about people abusing the right to call themselves and artist in the music industry, Honey stated "The word "artist" has been raped and abused by so many individuals making "music". I don't believe rapping on an instrumental makes you an artist, it makes you a rapper. An artist has a more creative mindset and goes beyond making a song just a catchy song." With Honey having such a mixture of different types of music and a different sound in itself, she deserves the right to call herself an artist. Many have their own views on being a indie artist versus being in the industry, Honey says that she thinks independent is an "amazing thing and truly the epitome of being self-made" , which many would agree with her on. When being self made and independent you can truly express yourself and build yourself from the ground up exactly as Honey is doing.
Her recent debut mixtape "Peace Of Mind" was inspired by Honey wanting to take her fans and listeners through the journey of her mind and thought patterns. Being known for her YouTube freestyles, this gives everyone a bit more of a deeper introduction to her and her music. Honey is working to book more shows and continuing to push her debut mixtape so look out for her in a city near you as well as more song releases! - Urbane Magazine

Honey The Hippie, born in Detroit, raised in Central Florida, and currently residing in Houston, TX, came about her stage name from the meaning of her birth name Oyinkansola, meaning "sweet like honey" in Yoruba. After winning a handful of national poetry completions since the age of 12, she decided to take her poetry writing to the next level. At 16 years old, she began writing raps to popular instrumentals, with no intentions of sharing these lyrics with anyone. However, her 11th grade English teacher noticed her writing excessively in class and asked her to stand up and recite her lyrics with her peers. Her classmates were in awe of her lyrical capabilities. In 2011, she decided to share these lyrics with the online world when she recorded her first freestyle on Youtube. Half a million views later, this 19 year old artist proved to be a rare breed of female lyricists. Her anticipated mixtape entitled Peace of Mind, debuted on the "Most Popular Mixtapes" worldwide on Datpiff in June 2013. With SXSW being her latest gig, Honey is currently working to book more shows and continuing to push her debut mixtape, Peace of Mind.
