Honeycomb

Honeycomb

BandFolkAvant-garde

Led by singer/songwriter Emily Ritz, Honeycomb is a hauntingly beautiful arrangement consisting of ukulele, cello, vibraphones, percussion and a four piece lady choir. The instrumental and vocal arrangements are complex and unique ranging from gentle to aggressive sometimes within the same song.

Biography

Honeycomb is a treasure in San Francisco’s music community. Their ability to silence rooms and rustle emotions with hauntingly beautiful compositions is uncanny. The project is a brainchild of multimedia artist Emily Ritz, who moved to San Francisco from upstate New York in order to pursue her film degree at the California College of the Arts. Her distinctive voice and ukulele style has garnered comparisons to Coco Rosie and Billie Holiday. About four months ago, Emily made the transition from being a solo artist known as HoneyBody MoonBee, to being part of the hive in the unique arrangement that is Honeycomb. Cello, vibraphone, percussion, and a small chorus of women contribute to the buzz that has been captivating audiences at recent concerts and street performances around the Bay Area. The extremely supportive and positive reaction from the local music community inspired the group to record a six track EP which will be released in mid March. They are also currently planning a Europe tour for May and June of 2010 with Kacey Johansing.

Lyrics

Sparrow

Written By: Emily Ritz

You sound like the tongue of a bell
Caught between cloven hooves
and the birds are taking off
the birds are taking off

I sound like the bone house
that swallowed a small sparrow
and the birds are taking off
the birds are taking off

Thing, thing, darkness
spilling into me
Spring, spring is upon us
the fever is spreading
Sing, sing forest
let me rest under your tree

and the birds are taking off
the birds are taking off
the birds are taking off
their wings

Flesh and Bone Machine

Written By: Emily Ritz

I'm just the host of this body
my mother gave to me
i'm just a flesh and bone machine
i break down internally

I lay to let the night come down
hovering
it blinds me just enough to dream
i wait for the day to come wake me
i can feel the day breaking internally

When the day comes to leave
i'll be equipped with cellophane wings
and a knife to cut my umbilical kite string
and you will hear me sing internally

Milky

Written By: Emily Ritz

I melt my wax body
my wick wallows in light
i claw my fur body
swallow myself whole in flight

I blow smoke rings around my soul
it makes for a good, blue, milky halo
where did all my smoke rings go?
where's my milky my milky milky milky
halo

I drink my water body
make myself shallow in the night time
i wash my dirty dirty dirty body
in the words of jesus christ

I blow smoke rings around my soul
it makes for a good, blue, milky halo
where did all my smoke rings go?
where's my milky my milky milky milky
halo

China Basin

Written By: Emily Ritz

Cranes, trains and automobiles
concrete, concrete, concrete fields
streets named after states
mississippi, connecticut, illinois
all in california

pilars, piles and glass fragments
under bridges over buildings all fenced in
freeway, freeway, freeway detour
what are all these chain link fences for?

rusted playground, styrofoam, bottle cap, broken bucket, toothless comb, burial ground, couch pillow, lone lost boot and a bamboo shoot

Cranes, trains and automobiles
concrete concrete concrete fields
keep out keep out keep out sign
private property, this is all mine

ripped up road and dug up earth
making bird baths and giving birth
to light grey, dark grey, beige grey, blue grey city
sliding on into the dirty old pacific sea

rusted playground, styrofoam, bottle cap, broken bucket, toothless comb, burial ground, couch pillow, lone lost boot and a bamboo shoot
