"Hoodoo Papas - Past Due"

Rick Woodward and Rick Seale call their music an acoustic gumbo, and rightly so, they are the Hoodoo Papas. This guitar duo from the heart of central Louisiana strut their stuff with a heapin’ helpin’ of down home music straight from their hearts telegraphed to their six-strings on their new release Past Due. They not only pluck and strum out some licks, they can sing up a storm as well. Their infectious blend of rock-country-blues-folk sounds so full and distinctive you will wonder if you are listening to a four-piece band rather than two papas strumming their guitars and belting out bluesy country fried numbers filled with their with Louisiana soul.

By the third listen, I wasn’t even a tad tired of hearing this album, it’s like a five o’clock shadow that never goes away! I loved every second of this and I say that without an inkling of reservation. . . Okay, can I gush anymore? This music had me comin’ back for seconds in a heartbeat. I will bet that it works that way for you too, if you love da blues and all the music that this great style spawned as I do.

I know good music when I hear it so here is my quote for this band-“A great album that took control and rocked my soul,” and you can take that one to the bank.

Hoodoo Papas • Past Due • self-released • I love Louisiana: the food, the music, the drive-thru hurricane stands. The Hoodoo Papas hail from this alcoholic music fan's paradise. Rick Woodward and Rick Seale serve up some soulful, bluesy tunes, featuring some serious acoustic guitar chops. Grab a Turbo Dog and enjoy the Papa's "acoustic gumbo" sound. Splendid Magazine 10/23/2004

This Louisiana duo brings a warm-hearted assortment of Southern blues to the table on their second album. Past Due is an apt title: the Hoodoo Papas have been playing together for the last 12 years, exhibiting their catchy tunes all over the South. The two Ricks (Seale and Woodward) have a great thing going; there's nothing exceptionally new or unusual about Past Due, but the guitar work is impeccable and everyone seems to be having a good time.
Past Due's ten tracks stick to well-worn themes like life and love. "Only Two Ways About It" is an appealing, sleepy opener, effectively contrasting the more upbeat tunes to come. "Big Hearted Woman" is a standout -- a lively three chord blues rocker in the classic Chuck Berry vein. On a more serious note, "Chasing Your Ghost" is a wistful look back at a lost relationship. It's a charming ballad, with sweet, heartfelt lyrics and a tender, soothing melody.

The sheer simplicity of the Hoodoo Papas' music is a big selling point. Most of the music was created entirely by the two Ricks, though a few tracks incorporate drums and piano. The best tracks focus on stripped-down blues performed on their acoustic guitars, but don't let that simplicity fool you -- they're definitely capable of more than this. Indeed, sometimes when it's just the two Ricks, you'd swear you were listening to a larger group.

The collaborative chemistry between Seale and Woodward manifests in both the quality of their performances and the moods behind them. It's obvious that they're playing music together simply because that's what they love to do.
