Standing out in the sea of indie bands, singer songwriters, rappers and DJs that make up Brooklyn is no easy task. Every now and then, however, one catches catches your ear. This time, it’s a burgeoning surf rock band known as Hot Curl.
With lead guitar lines that Albert Hammond Jr. would approve of, Hot Curl bursts onto the scene with “Beached” and “What’s On TV.” Masterfully blending sunny guitar lines and a raw DIY garage rock attitude, the Bushwick foursome arrives with two summer gems that are sure to fit into any summer party playlist right in between Beach Fossils and Washed Out.
“Beached” implores us to “Close your eyes / See the world from a different angle” as lead guitarist Alejandro Triana rips out a guitar line channeling Craft Spells‘ “Breaking the Angle Against the Tide.” The band’s cohesion is on full display during the instrumental breakdown on the last third of “What’s On TV” as Triana’s guitar blends perfectly with Neal Donovan’s bass line, while Justin Lisa’s drumming pushes the song to a greater high before Prescott Horn’s vocals return for a final encore.
You can download “Beached” and “What’s on TV” via Hot Curl’s Bandcamp. If you’re in NYC, check them out this Saturday, May 9th at Pianos. - All Things Go
