Bio

Musically speaking, Hot Souse is an interesting mixture of traditional blues seasoned with touches of rhythm & blues, soul and jazz just for flavor. It begins with a hearty portion of appreciation for traditional Delta and Chicago blues styles and is topped off with the subtle seasonings of a variety of other artists and musical influences.

From B. B. King to Janis Joplin, from Koko Taylor to Louis Jordan, from Big Mama Thornton to The Allman Brothers and Muddy Waters, from Van Morrison to Nat King Cole this musical menu tantalizes, teases and ultimately satisfies in a great celebration of the spirit of the blues. The band borrows compositions from many other blues masters for its repertoire including blues pioneers such as Elmore James, Howlin’ Wolf, Blind Willie McTell and many others. But just as you cannot enjoy the fine tastes of any culinary art without the work of a fine cook, so the music is a creation of some master chefs.

The band is fronted by the spirited vocalization of the youthful husband/wife duo of Laura and Sam Henderson and features the often touted work of guitarist extraordinaire Phil Margolis along with keyboardist/sax man Jon DeRhodes. The rhythm section is anchored by the impressive machinations of drummer / percussionist Craig Wise and bassist Mike Covert.

Laura’s sultry and soulful renditions of classic blues stylings range from the cool to the red hot making her an instant favorite with audiences everywhere; while Sam’s southern roots bring a spicy and powerful flavor to the variety of the duo’s flair. Together their purity and passion provide a warm and contagious spirit that has become the band’s trademark.

Phil, a graduate of Berkley School of Music (Boston, MA) contributes an impressive sampling of sonic seasonings played on an array of old and vintage guitars. His slide guitar work is strongly reminiscent of traditional blues sounds and always a welcome feature. Jon’s keyboard compositions ring of honky-tonk style piano and powerful Hammond organ sounds alike - while his tenor and alto sax playing takes the songs to a new level. His solo efforts and powerful rhythm grooves are a fine compliment to the band's style.

Well-seasoned instrumentalists, Craig and Mike provide a formidable rhythm section that nails down the group’s many and contoured grooves with smooth precision and taste. Their timing and virtuosity speak of a well-developed understanding and affinity for the blues with a pulse that keeps the heart pumping and the dance floor hopping.

Every member of the band could boast of impressive previous experiences in other musical endeavors (references available upon request) but this band is not about braggadocio, it is about delivering great live music. It sets the table for authentic and innovative musical cuisine that has already become a crowd favorite in smoke –filled roadhouses, at large outdoor festivals, intimate nightclubs and a variety of other venues.
