"The Blackheart Sessions EP Review"

Bristol's finest former one-man-band, once delivering multi-tasked frazzled blues and gin-soaked country music, now surrounded by a posse of like minded local heroes for this brisk canter through beers, tears, loser, liars, and sinners. 'John Doe' puts mandolin and banjo up front with Emily Breeze's dustbin lid drums for a cheery Pogues-like shanty with Johnny Dowd's recipe for the human heart: "Cut it out and burn 'cause it's evil and wicked". 'Once Proud Town' has a Calexica vibe to go with it's big sky gallop and everything halts for the funeral to go by with ' Ace Up Your Sleeve', a song lacking only Mark Lanegan guesting from the bottom of a well for the second verse. 'Down To The River' prompts fond memories of serial underachievers, Green on Red; "Guess I won't be getting saved today." Bleak, broken-hearted and classy. '(Kid Pensioner) - Venue Magazine

Bio

‘Country rock’n’roll with a world weary authority’…

Alone with an acoustic guitar or electrified and backed by his rhythm section of Mark Furnevall (Bass) and Thom Elgie (Drums), Howlin’ Lord delivers the kind of heart worn country songs that made the world fall in love with Hank Williams Snr. and J.R. Cash. Except these songs come not from the cotton fields and honkytonks of the American South but the seaside towns and industrial decline of the British Southwest. Rolling tumbleweeds are exchanged for a discarded beer can rolling in the wind along an out of season seafront but the backbeat and reverb drenched guitars remain the same.

Live, the band turn on a dime from haunting atmospheric, balladry to blistering rock’n’roll hurricanes bordering on total annihilation, imagine Black Flag tearing through a Morricone soundtrack and you’ll not be far off!

Having spent the last year touring the now sold out Blackheart Sessions EP (still available on iTunes) including well received trips to Ireland, appearances at Dot to Dot Festival, the Camden Crawl and support slots for acts from the late Jay Reatard (R.I.P.) to The Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir, the band are now working on their first full length LP with Luke Cawthra of Phantom Limb on production duties.

‘In keeping with the spirit of Hank Williams, bleak, broken and classy.’
