Bio

There’s no such thing as luck. One might believe that members of the Lexington-based rock group, One If By Land, would disagree with that statement. Since forming in December, they have already recorded their first EP, built a fiercely loyal following, played several successful shows, and secured opening spots for nationally acclaimed artists such as Michael Tolcher, and Waterproof Blonde. However, chance has played only a minor role in One If By Land’s career thus far. Much preparation and determination have been the catalysts for the their seemingly quick success as an independent band. Perhaps a bit of luck was present when founding members, drummer Jake Bell, bassist Mike Lloyd, and guitarist Nate Woodall, stumbled upon the enticing vocals of Azniv Korkejian in a local Lexington music club. After gaining some momentum by performing at the 2004 Florida Music festival and opening for Ben Folds, the trio found themselves without a vocalist. Despite her success performing as a solo act on the West Coast, Azniv was ready to combine her talents with equally ambitious musicians and form a band. On a whim, the talented multi-instrumentalist’s search began in Lexington, Kentucky. Luck? Maybe. Along with the later addition of classic rock/blues infused guitarist, Jesse Langebartels, the four musicians began to collaborate and define their style. With an energetic live show that appeals to audiences of all ages, the band soon found their strength in the ability to mold several varied influences into a cohesive presentation of sound. With influences ranging from classical and hardcore, to jazz, soul, and folk, One If By Land’s music is full of surprises. Solidified by smooth vocals reminiscent of Norah Jones and Lauren Hill, One If By Land’s first EP is a refreshing combination of catchy modern rock and classic soulful sounds that celebrates each member’s individual style.
