"Soundproof Soundbyte: A Certain Symmetry"

What do the categories Best Indie Rock and Best Live Acoustic have in common? A Certain Symmetry — the band, not the concept. The Toronto-based five-piece walked away from the third annual Toronto Independent Music Awards (TIMA) with both awards in the bag. The guys are delighted with their wins: "It tells us that the fans are listening and relating to our music," says pianist James Taylor.

Tony Margani, who plays bass and acoustic guitar, describes ACS' sound as "vocal-based harmony between Ferg and Tony"; the love child of acoustic and rock. "We're like Simon & Garfunkel in the sense that we have the harmony and the intimate acoustic sound, but we're also a full band, which likens us to Cold Play." Winning in both categories is a clear indication that the audience and judges agreed with them.

The TIMAs (held annually in October) was full of ups and downs. "We won our first award before we took the stage for our performance. The follow up and camaraderie backstage were excellent," says Margani. Presented by SoundProof Head Honchos, Chris Stevenson and Scott Mckean, the award for Best Indie Rock was the first award ACS had ever won.

Their surprise performance after winning the Best Live Acoustic award was followed by some technical difficulties. Fergus Hyde, vocalist and bass player recounts, "At one point, my bass amplifier had stopped working. A gentleman on the sound board helped out by making a quick adjustment. To fill in the time, I just started dancing and everyone thought it was part of the show!"

Besides winning two out of the three awards they were nominated for, ACS had a great night. "When it comes right down to it, playing at the TIMAs was a luxury. We've played in much smaller venues with worse conditions. We enjoyed ourselves and had a great time," said Mattieu Sherping (electric guitar).

And it only gets better. What's on the horizon for A Certain Symmetry? "This winter we'll be performing many shows, going back to the mixing house, etc.," says Margani. And they certainly aren't ruling out playing at the Junos in the near future. "We enjoy what we do and the sky's the limit!" - Soundproof Magazine

Background/
Composition Five-piece rock pop band combine classical piano, extreme harmonies and catchy guitars with a sense of humour.

A Certain Symmetry seduced the entire audience with flawless singing and Beatles-esque pop. What set this band apart was their ability to play off one another.

Never taking themselves too seriously, this band brought the audience to a complete silence when they started playing.

With Turin Brakes harmonies, this music is the soundtrack to any summer. It's light but hearfelt, so the audience feels like they're being sung to, not sung at.

A Certain Symmetry have a number of well-crafted pop rock songs.

The guitarist and bassist switched instruments seemlessly throughout the show.

They sound like a band who have been playing together for a long time. They know their music inside and out.

"A Certain Symmetry Drop Teaser, Chaos at the 'Shoe"

It's a lot of fun to watch a band get more and more popular, and I've been lucky to see Toronto's A Certain Symmetry do just that. In the two years they've been gigging around the city, they've headlined and opened dozens of shows, left screaming audiences in their wake, and earned quite a following in the process. As recently as three weeks ago they were featured in NOW Magazine as a pick of the NXNE festival.

Until now, though, fans haven't had anything other than great memories to bring home at the end of the night. That will finally change this Saturday at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern when A Certain Symmetry hand out a free copy of their new teaser CD to the first two-hundred people to show up. A pre-release to their first album, Pursuit, which is due later in the year, the EP features three songs that have become fan-favourites at shows over the past few years.

For those who have already seen the band, you know what you're in for: a Simon & Garfunkel meets the Weakerthans meets Mozart smorgasbard of aural pleasure. The new songs are previewable on the band's website, but anyone who has seen the band knows: they're best experienced live.

"Toronto Independent Music Awards (TIMA) Review"

A Certain Symmetry

The guy who introduced these guys described them as a mix of Coldplay, Simon and Garfunkel and Radiohead. Certainly a flattering intro, and pretty accurate. Great piano in their performance! They did, afterall, win Best Indie Rock and Best Acoustic, and seem to marry the best of rock and acoustic together. Throw in some Beatles too. They also seemed to be a crowd favourite, supported by many adoring fans that hooted and hollered every time their name was dropped. Singer Fergus Hyde (Fergus is one of two lead singers for A Certain Symmetry) has a beautiful voice that does bear a mild resemblance to Chris Martin, but the band’s lyrics did not strike me as wretched as Coldplays. Too bad I didn’t jot down the name of the songs they played for us at TIMA (beer was well flowing at this point), but I quickly paid a visit to their MySpace to listen to “It Happens” and “Combustibles” which put me in a good mood, with made-up words like “explosure” I don’t think you can go wrong. - www.fazer.ca

"A Certain Symmetry teaser"

A Certain Symmetry teaser
July 12th, 2007

Toronto indie pop rock group A Certain Symmetry was able to treat their fans to a 3 track teaser CD at one of their live performances back in June. The much anticipated full length release titled “Pursuit” will be released by the end of summer. The three songs that are featured on the teaser CD can currently be downloaded at the band’s myspace site. All three songs are plastered with great sounds, which makes me even more eager to hear what else the band has in store. I’m not going to throw out any comparisons to their sound, because I think they have some very original offerings which deserve full recognition. They write some great music, and I encourage you to give them a listen. - Musicnetwork.Wordpress.com

Bio:
A certain symmetry. There is a feeling that you get when you pass through the neighbourhood you grew up in, the school you went to, a route you used to take. There may be a change here or there, but the place is the same - the features that define it for you. The consistency comforts, and greets you like an old friend. The music of A Certain Symmetry aims to reconnect the band and listeners to the building blocks that make us who we are, and that somehow fall by the wayside, pushed out by the urgencies of every day. It is the connection to those instinctive feelings that makes the A Certain Symmetry experience so intimate, where audience and performers revisit destinations they never really left. The band members have been playing music within and beyond Toronto since the days of foot-hockey in elementary school playgrounds. From choral tours throughout the world, to rock and roll concerts in the Montreal-Toronto corridor, to traditional Irish music in smoky pubs on both sides of the Atlantic, the path taken by each of these five musicians has been meandering and eclectic. But taking the road less traveled truly has made all the difference. The result is a brand of music that is familiar, yet diverse and unique, with influences ranging from Simon and Garfunkle to Coldplay and from Mozart to Radiohead. A Certain Symmetry was formed out of a common sense of purpose and a belief that if you stick by what you know and love the best, the universe will conspire to make good things happen; you just need a little bit of pressure and a little bit of time. Two lead vocalists sharing acoustic guitar and bass duties, an electric guitarist, a pianist and a percussionist search together for the elusive balance between the everyday and the extraordinary; happy that you're coming along for the ride. - West 49
