SoloPopSinger/Songwriter

Acclaimed Indie Pop band from the Philippines known for creating sophisticated pop music with Filipino sensibilities.

Biography

Clemen Castro (born 10 December 1976), also known as Clementine, is a singer-songwriter and music producer from the Philippines. He gained recognition in early 2000 as the guitarist/songwriter/vocalist of Philippine indie band Orange & Lemons reaching gold and platinum status. After the band's break up in 2007, Clementine formed The Camerawalls and founded Lilystars Records - his own indie pop record label to support his own releases as well as local and foreign indie acts.

Major influences includes The Smiths, The Beatles and new wave/80s jangle pop groups. Often transcendent of the usual labels, his sound is characterized by a lyricism and melodic sensibility. His recordings feature a sonic tapestry of jangly acoustic and driving electric guitars. Occasional flourishes of traditional Philippine folk instruments like the Rondalla, and classical Western music instrumentation lend a distinctive flavour to his sound.

Clementine is currently working on first solo album due for release on July 2013.

Lyrics

Birthday Wishes

Written By: Clementine

I call upon the Universe
To never take the shine off common people
Whose eyes are still gleaming with hope

I call upon the President
To limit her ambitions
There are far more greater things in Life than power

I wish for peace and love
A better country
And a happy coexistence
Longevity of the people I love
All these years I think of nothing
No one but myself in birthday wishes
Now I think of you…
Now I think of you…

I pray to you my sweetest Lord
Paint us a portrait of your Love
I sing to you my dearest friends
Never cease believing
Dreams do come true

I wish for peace and love
A better country
And a happy coexistence
Longevity of the people I love
All these years I think of nothing
No one but myself in birthday wishes
Now I think of you…
Now I think of you…

Ooh, grant me these wishes
Ooh, grant me these wishes
Something good ends
Something better will begin
Something good ends
Something better will begin
And in this fog I use my heart as a compass
And in the darkness
My faith is my lamp
And in depression I learn
The real value of Living

Bread and Circuses

Written By: Clementine

We are cooks and crooks with empty plates to fill
Serving dishes for our peers in vaudeville
We dread for their reaction
They get no satisfaction
Their palates’ dulled and burned with misery

And as a child I seem to think of destiny
For reason I can’t explain
Is it any wonder why my life turn out the way it did?
We choose what we have
And sometimes lose more than our bread
You’ve given Life your trust
And it’s been thrown back at your face
To realize what’s right
For the story of your Life

I’m tired of being fed with bread and circuses
This world view seems incredibly conservative
With passion just like mine
Will you gravely read my stones
When I should die

And as a child I seem to think of destiny
For reason I can’t explain
Is it any wonder why my life turn out the way it did?
We choose what we have
And sometimes lose more than our bread
You’ve given Life your trust
And it’s been thrown back at your face
To realize what’s right
For the story of your Life…
For the story of your Life…

Clinically Dead For 16 Hours

Written By: Clementine

My heart is a terrible failing
I am just beginning to fathom
Love’s difficult concept
Swift beats are bending my mindset

It’s wasting my time
It’s wasting so much precious time
Touring white castles with other survivors
And then without warning

I was clinically dead for sixteen hours
Show me all the things my heart desires
Let this be the longest happy dream of my life
Clinically dead for sixteen hours
Crossing all the roads where lines began
Break my hourglass and let the sands move in time

Three short moons I survived that fatal day
But reaching breaking point,
I sleep and face the knife of fate
And my heart breathe air for the first time
Yes, my heart breathe air for the first time

A stitch in time and skin
Has changed my life and the lives of my kin
A stitch in time and skin
Has changed my life and the lives of my kin

I’m keeping my time
I’m keeping my precious little time
Touched by the Hand that’s been rocking my cradle
I’ll always remember

I was clinically dead for sixteen hours
Show me all the things my heart desires
Let this be the longest happy dream of my life
Clinically dead for sixteen hours
Crossing all the roads where lines began
Break my hourglass and let the sands move in time

No tunnel, no light
No dead love ones
Maybe I need to teach someone
That we won’t realize what we have till we lose them
That we won’t realize what we have till we lose them
That we won’t realize what we have till we lose them
That we won’t realize what we have till we lose them

My Life's Arithmetic Means

Written By: Clementine

Anytime you need someone to hold on
Even though it’s only words of comfort
Whatever you are doing
You can always count on me

Chemically induced hallucinations
Do you want to heal or push the knife on
I can be the only drug that you will ever need

I’ll be your North, your South
Your East and West
Your pillow, your wine
And your Sunday’s rest
When the twilight sets in
I’ll pin your curtains with stars

Laughter always forgives and forgets
Oh, like a bubble at a touch
I won’t let you break
I won’t even pretend
Cause you’re the value of my life’s arithmetic means

Trouble’s that you share are troubles halved
I’ll carry all the weight oh, turnaround
I’ll even share these dreams to last
For fifteen thousand nights

I’ll be your North, your South
Your East and West
Your pillow, your wine
And your Sunday’s rest
When the twilight sets in
I’ll pin your curtains with stars

Laughter always forgives and forgets
Oh, like a bubble at a touch
I won’t let you break
I won’t even pretend
Cause you’re the value of my life’s arithmetic means
Cause you’re the value of my life’s arithmetic means

The Emperor, The Concubine & The Commoner

Written By: Clementine

Hundreds of years ago when emperors rule
The most beautiful girl was torn apart
An honour to her family but death to her heart
A mistress she will be, the emperor’s concubine.

I was a commoner, a slave to the rules
Inside the Forbidden City, I was rooted
With a glimpse of her peach blossom eyes
Caught, imprisoned and beaten
Oh, what a grave sin it is to stare at the emperor’s concubine

One gloomy night she came and brought some provisions
Completely forgetting the hunger and pain
As she parted her lips for a brief conversation
The visit has blossomed into romance
The beginning of a tragic affair with the emperor’s concubine

Upon release I go back to my woodcutting station
And under the new moon’s light to my lover’s temptation
Inside the forest, witnessed by the stars, we made love
Parting before the rituals begin in the palace of the emperor’s concubine

Fire in our eyes
Fire in our hearts
We have dared to defy imperial convention

Some good things never last, and for us it quickly came to pass
Like a Shakespearian sonnet, knocking at the doors of death
The emperor’s fury was conquered with love and mercy
To his concubine he said, “Remove the unwanted in your womb,
And your life will be spared.”

Fire in our eyes
Fire in our hearts
We have dared to defy imperial convention
Off with our heads
Off with our lives
We will wait till our next incarnation.
