"A Review of (Introducing) Oxford Blue"

(Introducing) Oxford Blue is a self-referential title for Pat Lefler and his self-described country-surf music. A graduate of Fanshawe’s Music Industry Arts program, Lefler released his debut album earlier this fall to, in a word, introduce himself to us as Oxford Blue.

Lefler’s introduction moves smoothly from a 60s surf sound into a modern-day typical country song over the course of seven tracks. The moments when he fuses the two genres, as in “Bargains,” grab attention as the messy, wailing guitar synthesizes classic rock with country for a riveting three minutes.

“Things Were Rough,” “Old Beater,” and “Flow Like a River” are part of a predominantly country mid-section, where “Old Beater” hovers loosely between genres while Lefler does his best country twang on “Flow Like a River” With such a heavy weight given to this genre over these three tracks, the guitar on Introducing really shines through as something spectacular.

Eponymous “Oxford Blue” slows things down—the kind of song you’d like to slow dance to, or at the very least have playing while you daydream deep into the night. Lefler’s vocals are unpresuming as he speculates about the world around him, as though the lyrics and music are compelling you to take things slow just this once.

Considering this is Lefler’s debut album, the quality of the recording is stellar—produced by Attack in Black’s Daniel Romano, the finished result is a clean and polished sound that lets the vocals and truly impressive guitar work come through. As for Lefler, it’s safe to say that his introduction will be remembered—and bring good things. - Gray Owl Point

Bio

Singing songs of traveling, growing, and developing an identity; Oxford Blue, has been breeding his working-folk stylings with a new variety of country/surf music to all those at his disposal. Graduated from Fanshawes Music Industry Arts Program, Oxford Blues passion for music and lyrics has gracefully paired with an in depth study in technology.

Having recently released his debut album "(Introducing) Oxford Blue," Lefler creates a edging pair of melody and groove, whilst still maintaining a more traditional styling of music. Such songs as Bargains, are long, and dynamic, heartfelt songs about leaving where you came from and traveling out alone. Whereas tracks like Coupe Deville, and Old Beater, are upbeat songs full of redemption, and reflection.

Oxford Blue has been seen playing at the 2011, and 2012 Home County Music & Arts Festival in London, Ontario, as well as a Charity event for the Heart & Stroke Foundation in dedication to the late Jack Richardson (producer of The Guess Who, Badfinger) at the Aeolian Hall this past February in London.
There is no doubt that there is only forward for Oxford Blue.
