Bio

Ian Boelens has been playing guitar for more than thirty-five years, starting back in the sixties while growing up in Saskatoon, Canada and Champaign, Illinois, U.S.A., while listening to folk, blues, rock ‘n roll, country and soul music. To this day, all of these influences and more can still be heard in his fluid, lyrical, energetic and emotional style of playing.

After moving to Holland in the nineteen seventies, Ian started a long career as a professional musician. Since then he has played in countless local bands in many styles, among them ‘The Booze and Blues Band’, ‘The News’, ‘So What’, ‘Mistura’, Ian is presently a member of the Dutch rockband Mama’s Cookin’, and the Belgium-based folk band Eaden.

A music conservatory trained composer and arranger as well, Ian has written and co-written music for a wide variety of projects, ranging from Nike, Albert Heyn, the Dutch Railways, to music for several TV stations, as well as composing and playing on numerous albums such as those by the Latin-jazz group Mistura , Bulgarian folksinger Dyana Dafova,

Since 1999, he has accompanied Nashville-based singer-songwriter Josie Kuhn on all her European tours. Ian has also recorded albums and toured with Scottish folksinger-songwriter Fraser Nimmo, and more recently, with Americana artist Jenny Kerr from San Francisco.

Ian Boelens’ atmospheric solo acoustic guitar album “Highland Flight: Sonic Poems On Acoustic Guitar” has been described as a collage of miniature film soundtracks, which take the listener on a subtle musical journey. Containing a mix of elements from many different styles, varying from medieval and renaissance music to Celtic folk, country blues and ragtime jazz, his compositions evoke strong images and moods from past and present times.
