Baltimore singer/songwriter Ian Jones set himself a task on his new Nightworld Records release "Can't Conquer Me": Lay it on the line. He suceeded, with a dozen heartfelt torch songs crafted in his original melodic style. But in another way, Ian failed at his task. His natural musicality and love of sound overtook what was intended to be a simple acoustic album. Instead, with the help of producer Philip Stevenson, Ian delivers a set of beautiful arrangements that touch everything from the lush psychedelia of The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds to the hard-driving thrust of The Stooges' Raw Power. And he did it all in one song: album highlight "Secret Admirer" describes its subject by switching from lusty punk verses demanding "I want you..." to the lavish blossoming choruses that serenade "You have never been so loved."
The album shows the multi-talented Jones's experience as a bandleader and recordist as well. Baltimore, Maryland-based musician and producer Ian Jones began recording at age 12, and reached the finals of the ASCAP Songwriter Awards by his 18th birthday. In 1993, he co-founded Evil Genius Audio Labs, a recording studio in the heartland of '90s indie rock, the Washington DC suburbs of Arlington Virginia (home to labels Dischord, Teenbeat, Simple Machines).
During the 1990s, Jones struck up a close association with Teenbeat Records, both as recording engineer on many of the label's discs and touring with Teenbeat bands Eggs and Viva Satellite. He continued to record his own projects and other artists throughout the decade, notably Tuscadero's The Pink Album (Teenbeat/Elektra).
Singer, guitarist and leader of his own group Bombardier Jones, he has performed live on both East and West Coasts, and a few place in the middle. His may be the only solo acoustic show ever shut down for a noise complaint. In 1996, he released the single "This Is The King of Suck" and acclaimed full album "Dustbowl" in 1997. At the turn of the century, Jones and electronic musician Peat Biby formed Jonesamaitc, which released the album "Cha Cha Cha" in 2003. His new solo album "Can't Conquer Me" will be released in 2007 on Nightworld Records.
In 2007, Jones joined forces with roots reggae founder Claudius Linton to create the group Kingman & Jonah. Working with legendary roots reggae musicians at Bob Marley's Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, Jamaica, the two tracked new tunes rich with spiritual insight, positive vibrations and a knowing eye on world events. The first CD-EP, "In The Streets"/"Baghdad" is out this Summer on Sun King Records. A full-length album and documentary film about the project are in production.
And oh yeah, he painted the cover art of his new album too. This kid... Can't conquer him...
