Friends of Ballard Park was happy to welcome a new title sponsor to its Music Month series this year: Jenkins Construction of Middletown, RI. Jenkins Construction Music Month featured four free concerts in the quarry meadow of Ballard Park. Cadence King, winner of the 3rd Annual Molly Finn Battle of the Bands, kicked things off on Friday, June 25th. The concert featuring Ian Cooper on guitar, Ryan Magner on bass and Alex Lanio on drums was well attended. Ian K Cooper has been singing in musicals since high school. He is a dramatic rock and roll and bluesey musician. Inspired by dramatic artists such as David Bowie, Queen, the Police, and opera singers likve Pavarotti and Joseph Legros. Listening to a demo CD with a few early tracks its easy to see how they took first place. The tracks are well planned, incredibly cohesive and damn well groovy. Cooper alternates between a pop sensibility akin to John Mayer, and harder guitar in the vein of Jimi Hendrix. - Newport Mercury

The Newport-based blues rock duo with Ian Cooper and Alex Lanio who won the 2009 Molly Finn Battle of the Bands recently, will perform a free outdoor concert at 3 p.m. at the Newport Recreation Family Fun Picnic at King Park on Sunday, Sept. 6. The outdoor concert and festival will be hosted by the city of Newport and will feature family activities throughout the day in addition to the performance by Cadence King and other musical acts.
