Ian Sklar

Ian Sklar

BandFolkAcoustic

I'm a passionate performer. My music is a quirky mix of acoustic guitar playing with some unusual rhythms, and melodies that don't go where you'd expect. I pay particular attention to lyrics always interpreting my performance in different ways. I use my nearly 3 octave range to keep it interesting.

Biography

Raised by a working class family in the port city of Elizabeth, NJ (the American version of liverpool:), Ian's melodic/alternative/acoustic core grew from varied musical influences. These included hit rock and roll singles from the 50's and 60's, Show tunes, disco 8-track tapes and -of course- The Beatles. Also, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Paul Simon. Even the exotic sound of Don Ho was heard coming from the garden apartment where Ian lived.

That potpourri of musical influences has created a style that can also be described as dynamically rhythmic and lyrical.

His performances are engaging. Whether playing to an intimate audience or a 25,000 seat theatre, he easily adapts to connect with the audience. He has played such venues such as CBGB's, The Living Room, Sine', Kenny's Castaways, Columbia University among many others.

Ian's songwriting philosophy is not to listen to other commercial artists too much. The spirit of the music is derived partially from the perspective of being a "latchkey child" observing and interpreting his surroundings. As a child he was free to explore the nooks and crannies of life, finding odd themes rising from the "interesting" cast of characters that roamed the streets of a tarnished town...fun.

Ian lets lifes experience filter through and have music be as pure and inspirational as possible, so "'many of my songs have a sound that's hard to pin down, though if you try, you can catch a hint of one artist or another in the tunes."

Ian can also write for other artists giving it the same passion as his own music.

People who have heard what he has to offer generally feel compelled to work with him. Of course, he is more than happy to craft a tune for others.

He is Currently keeping up his chops playing mainly in the East Village and around the NYC Met. area. "My music is my catharsis. It defines me. It is singular." Ian is not afraid to write and sing "my naked truth".

He not only wears his heart on his sleave, he pins his lungs on his lapel and hangs his liver around his neck.

Ian Sklar's audiences find themselves tapping toes to titles like "Bubble" and bobbing heads with the rhythm of "Stories From My Window".

Other musicians are complimentary as they accompany the songs almost regardless of the instrument they play as long as they keep true to their own "voice"

So, moving from a working class neighborhood to an artsy, intellectual area of the country has enabled Ian to "channel" either experience or combine them musically and lyrically into engaging musical fusions.

Love Fell Down

Written By: Ian Sklar

I fell down in the ocean
I was so blue, then I saw you

I lost all my devotion
I was sinking, what was I thinking?

And I lost my fear of flying
I was falling. I was calling your name

Should I give myself just to please you
Should I give myself just to ease you

Love Fell Down like raindrops from the sky and filled my heart.
I will take these wings and teach them how to fly in your heart.
But my memory is incomplete.

I didn't believe in angels.
You have shown me. You have taken me in.
I thought that love was blind then I saw you. I could not ignore you.

Should I give myself just to please you.
Should I give myself just to ease you.

Love Fell Down like raindrops from the sky
I will take these wings and teach them how to fly (in my heart)
But my memory is incomplete...

Pulling Me In

Written By: Ian Sklar/Michelle Yules

Something you said, stuck in my head
Was it the way your lips hesitate

Something so right, the way you move through my night.
Silent emotion-Pulling Me In

In this space that we create, sight and sound meet touch and taste. Oh I. Oh I.

One common thread, our silhouette floats through the dark until dawn.

When we're apart, sewn to my heart the sound of your whisper-Pulling Me In.

In this space that we create, sight and sound meet touch and taste, oh I. Oh I.

In this void that we fill with innocence all time stands still Oh I. Oh I.

You own the light. Captured Insight
Share it with me as we become one.
I've waited so long it's almost a sin to feel this way now- you're Pulling Me In

In this space that we create sight and sound meet touch and taste, oh I.
In this void that we fill with innocence all time stands still, oh I...

Do You Want to Fall in Love

Written By: Ian Sklar

What do you want to do today?
The games we played were fun for awhile.

I can roll with the punches and I like to play but in the end your truth is my style.

Your naked truth is my style.

You can bounce off walls-wander dark halls.
There's one thing I need to know.

Do You Want to Fall In Love?

You can follow the path to my soul through a maze on a heart shaped box.

One chamber, one door and no way out

A paper cut from a Hallmark card.

A crimson crescent paper cut.

You can balance on your fences and strengthen your defences.
There's one thing I need to know.

Do You Want to Fall In Love?

You might think I'm being kind of
superstitious
But babe to me your lips look
delicious.

You can balance on your fences
Or strengthen your defenses.
There's one thing I need to know.

Do You Want to Fall In Love?

Bubble

Written By: Ian Sklar

Ooh you know what I mean what I say when I'm talking to you. Talking to you-baby.

You got my face in your mind when the feeling hits your stomach hard, but your head rings like the phone-off the hook- you sound like nails on the 3 a.m. sky.

Hey maybe you can nail this feeling down. Dissect it like a bug all over town. Don't know what you were like before this hurt made you die (inside)

When you don't know where you
can go to run from your troubles
you created on your own
Living in your Bubble

Love will pass on
Lonely days are gone
It's much better than being
alone
Much better than being alone.

You don't know where you can
go to run from your trouble
you've created on your own
Living in your Bubble

You love the comfort of
strangers huh?

Wake me up then the night shines through
Take me up on the roof for the view

You sleep and you dance to the
hypno tune
the lights slash your heart like a
stone
We always dream alone, always
dream alone

I won't be taking swipes at you, unless these thoughts can filter through
This coma of ours self induced.
I wake to be happy with you knowing what love can do...
...Love can take you home to a different feeling a kind of warm.

You don't know where to go-
seeing double.
You don't know what you've
done but you're in trouble

Don't let me know and see what
I won't do.
Leave it all alone. Leave it up to
you.
