The appropriately named Idaho Meth Project create teeth-gnashing psych rock on a delusional quest through sunburnt streets, occasionally drifting back into a drug-addled slumber.
Each song is a mantra that the female and male vocals obsessively reiterate to themselves in a haunting deadpan. “War like entities, We’re doing too much cocaine, And I swear I was the only one for you, Whisky gave me wings then he took away the sky, Give me the last drop, Tell me your name, I won’t wear it out, Call it a day,” make up all of the intelligible lyrics between these five tracks.
“War Like Entities” starts off this demo and it brings synth rock back to Bellingham with an opening riff that reminds me of when 10 Killing Hands frequented town. A lead guitar and backing organ breakdown give us a glimpse of nostalgic beauty before a shot of adrenaline comes back to thrash the end of the song around. “The Only One” combines Free Kitten with a Ben Gibbard drum machine in the loud/quiet/loud noise vein.
The final track, “Call it a Day”, sums up IMP’s songwriting style best between their raucous instrumentals, breathy and repetitious vocals, and anxiety inducing guitar leads.
When I saw Idaho Meth Project play last year I wasn’t very into it, but I dig this demo. It’s best listened to with headphones on. I haven’t seen them on any bills lately but I definitely want to give their live show another shot.
