Ida Long

I’m a sucker for a sweet and sultry voice. I remember the first time I heard Cat Power back in 2003, and before that, hearing Elysian Fields for the first time. Both bands focusing on their best assets: the voice. It is no surprise then, that one of my newest finds, Ida Long, appeals so much to me. Long’s sound is all centered on her sultry, moody vocals. She resonates a smooth, haunting and sexy sound which is overlaid on a simple but well-crafted bed of pianos, jazzy bass and subtle drums. Her sound is at home in a smoky jazz club as much as a modern venue and her subtle style is winning fans all round. Long’s solo work is a continuation of her foundations with the band Baron Bane (who will get their own write-up soon) whose rougher, less feminine sound is punctuated by these same sweet and dark vocals.

Long herself describes her influences coming from such diverse quarters as Kate Bush, Tori Amos and Nine Inch Nails. Whilst I might usually balk at those three artists being uttered in the same breath, with Ida I can understand it. There is an almost-gothic darkness to her sound, and Ida says she tries to use her voice as the instrumentation. Due to her refreshing an unique sound, Long has had impressive reviews (Swedish) from all sides.

Though what I find most interesting is that Ida’s music is not comprised soley of the audio, but is meant to be pared with dance and movement. You can tell from the video for “Doll” just how seamlessly the music meets with the ethereal dance aesthetic, for Ida describes herself as both a singer and dancer. She says of her dancing and music, “It took me a while figure out how I could use them together but now it feels natural. I think dancing is a way to express the soul of the music and it takes it even further.” Ida loves choreography and enjoys the other creative avenues that her music creates, “Somehow for me it makes sense that the visual plays of/is an extension the music to create one body. And I can’t really help myself from doing it.”

And quite honestly, we can’t help but love it. An excellent single from a singer-songwriter-dancer who has a lot more to give. Expect bigger and better things! - Indieserendipity

Kiel – Einen musikalischen Hochgenuss erlebten am Sonntag die Gäste im Besu- cher des Prinz Willy. In einem schwarzen Abendkleid gab die schwedische Sängerin Ida Long eine Vorstellung par ex- cellence. Ihr Stil ist eine Mi- schung aus Pop, Experimen- tal und Alternative; angesie- delt irgendwo zwischen Kate Bush und Björk und trotzdem nicht vergleichbar. Denn das Besondere an Ida Long ist ihre Ausstrahlung, ihr spezielles Charisma, mit dem sie das Pu- blikum in ihren Bann zog.
Andächtig lauschten die Zuhörer ihrer ausdrucksstar- ken,emotionsgeladenen Stimme. Ida Long vermag es, eine Stimmung zu erzeugen, die mystisch, melancholisch und sehnsüchtig zugleich ist. Ihre Musik entbehrt jeder Oberflächlichkeit, sie trifft den Zuhörer mitten ins Herz. Ihre Lieder zeugen von einer Tiefe, die man bei anderen Bands oft schmerzlich ver- misst.
Die schwedische Sängerin verzauberte das Publikum nicht nur mit den sphärischen Klängen ihrer Musik, sondern bot dem Zuhörer zugleich ei- ne virtuose Performance. Be- gleitet wurde sie dabei von ei- ner zweiten Sängerin und Performancekünstlerin. Die Tanzeinlagen waren perfekt einstudiert und wirkten sorg- sam durchdacht. Im Hinter- grund liefen Videos: Mädchen in weißen Kleidern, sich win- dend, tanzend, fast schwe- bend. Irgendwie surreal, der Welt entrückt – eine Stim- mung wie in David-Lynch Fil- men.

Fantastisch, fantastisch, fantastisch.....:!
Eine der seltenen Gelegenheiten, höchstwertige Qualität gepaart mit Perfektion dargeboten zu bekommen.
