"Making an album"

"It’s regrettably apparent that these days solid hip hop albums are extremely few and far between. And when I use the word “album,” I mean an album as a whole, and not a collection of unrelated songs without ties to each other that are thrown together for the sake of releasing something, anything. I like to listen to concept albums, albums that may run off in many directions from track to track, but maintain enough of a common theme underneath to tie it all together and make the listener feel as if they’re listening to something important; an uninterrupted transmission from someone’s heart and mind, captured as a handful of magical moments of immediacy. Ide’s opus, “Force Fed” fits that description to a tee.

Go through the album once and you’ll definitely catch the beats. Sick production and undoubtedly excellent music resound throughout.

Go through the album a few more times and you’ll start to catch the lyrics, and more importantly, the concepts behind them. Ide touches on some varied and controversial topics, ranging from the paranoia we all feel about the current state of life in the ever-tightening grasp of a New World Order [Hidden Network], to going off rather convincingly on the subject of hallucinogens along with Alucard, from the Creative Juices camp [Psilasylum]. The latter has become my go-to song when I step out to skate my neighborhood streets. Nothing puts me in that ‘zone’ quicker than the opening notes to ‘Psilasylum’, especially with a few beers already tickling my brain cells.

Basically, Ide’s put out an ALBUM. That’s rare in these days of disposable, single-driven music. The experience actually gets deeper with each listen, making it more rewarding with time. It will no doubt age gracefully over the years, and take it’s proper place among the classics of hip hop.

"Ide Force Fed"

REVIEW
Saturday, March 24, 2007
Ide - Force Fed (2007)

OK straight up, i got this joint on a whim. Didnt expect much from this at all. However, im going to tell you right now.....this CD right now is BY FAR my pick for best CDs of 2007 so far!!! Its a bold statement i know, but this CD will be getting steady rotation in my system. This was supposed to be released last year (December 2006)

If you like that East Coast, Wu-Tang, Brooklyn Academy, Army Of The Pharaohs, type Hip-Hop, then you NEED this is your collection. Every single track on this joint is straight FIRE. This isnt for the "radio rap" fan. This is that underground grime with lyrics that make you destroy your rewind button!!! If you dont get this CD, then you have missed out on the dopest shit to bless your brain... I might be overhyping this, but BEST CD OF 2007 SO FAR sums it up! BUY THIS!!! - Hip Hop Bootleggers

"Hip Hop is not Dead"

The debut album from Ide the Shanty One, “Force Fed” is a verbal maelstrom whipping through the placid seas of 21st century underground hip-hop with thunderous beats and lightning-strike lyrics. Ide displays his furious command of the mic over 23 dark and storming beats, his imaginative and visceral word-warping and unrelenting flow striking listeners with gut-punch directness.
Following Jak Progresso’s “Random Violence” as the 2nd full-length release from Creative Juices Music, “Force Fed” heralds the charge of this new artist onto the NY underground scene: Ide the Shanty One. Already earning respect for expert production and engineering for various underground artists, now Ide brings forth this manifesto of disgust and impatience with a twisted culture and reminds listeners why hip-hop is NOT dead. Throughout his first lp, he avoids lecturing about society directly but instead proclaims this gritty mission statement championing subversive artistry and psychic exploration. This Creative Juices Music release gathers a total of 10 producers, including Domingo, Deep and Ben Boogz (2 Hungry Bro’s/Creative Juices), DJ Connect (Elite Fleet), and others, as well as Ide himself, yet projects a unified sonic stampede of steel-toed hip-hop. Joining The Shanty One on the mic are U.G. (Cella Dwellas), Savage Messiah (formerly of Scienz of Life), Critical, Madness, Alucard, Jak Progresso, and L.I.F.E.Long (Stronghold), all contributing cinematic similes in an unrelenting flood. Ide’s “Force Fed” is compelling in its ferocity, and fitting that he is initiating his chapter in music in the company of these well-known figures on the underground scene.
“Force Fed” is for hungry listeners, who’ve had enough of the formula, and don’t mind a little pain if their rap would only get its edge back. This brazen debut album from Ide the Shanty One is a sure classic for 2007 and another strong product from the Creative Juices Music label.

"Deep of 2 Hungry Brothers"

Deep is a producer that's worked with Jak Progresso, LoDeck, LIFE Long, VastAir, Breez Evahflowin and Ace Lover. Mentored by studio engineer and producer, Fred Ones (Rob Sonic, Creature etc.) One half of the production team 2 Hungry Brothers along side partner and crime Ben Boogz, co-founder of the underated Johnny 23 crew and member of the Creative Juices crew, another branch on the family tree. "There's a whole forest of these fuckers!" in the words of a Bacteria known as E.Coli. Deep has contributed production to the underground classic compilation Old Trolls New Brigde, LoDeck's solo album, Dream Dentistry and the infimous Many Styles self titled debut release. Recently, he's been at work on Jak Progresso's album, Random Violence (This kid never dissappoints an audience looking for blood, senseless surreal logic and disturbingly unique takes on turning wrong into right.) Homie has been doing it since the early 90's. Yet another artist that marks the notion that hip-hop is no longer catering to just the youth, but an actual culture that is evolving to a level of legitemacy acknowlegded by even the most conservative Muslim torturing republican or stock broke peanut counter.

Our(me and 2 Hungry Brothers) introduction was in the midst of Scribble Jam '05 when a 2 Hungry Brothers compilation album, Frequent Flyers was shoved into my face by Ben Boogz, asking me to purchase a copy. "Well, shit, you want to buy my CD?" I asked him, surrounded by IDE, Alucard, LIFE Long and the Creative Juices Crew who were also hustling merch (they were killing it). Deep didn't appear into the frame till...I think it was in Brooklyn at a bar, celebrating IDE's birthday. Which ended up at another bar(inebriated) and to the best of my memory talking about Radiohead piano chords and Charles Bukwoski with Louis Logic (interesting guy). Meanwhile, Deep was pushing music to Williamburg hipsters and keeping it focused, staying true to his crew's title...2 Hungry Brothers.

What equipment you using?
NOTHING FANCY. BEN AND I STARTED WITH THE MPC2000 IN 2000 AND HAD WHOLE LOT OF FRESH RECORDS TO THROW INTO THE MIX. NOW I GOT THE 4000 AND ALOT MORE FRESH RECORDS. BASICALLY NOTHINGS CHANGED. WE JUST DIG HARD AND PUT OUR HEARTS INTO IT.

What inspired you to start making beats?/What producers do you look up to?
STARTED DJAYING IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL. I STARTED RHYMING AND STILL DJAYING. I THINK ONE OF THE COOLEST REVELATIONS AS A YOUNGSTER IN HIP HOP WAS FINDING OUT ABOUT SAMPLING. I THOUGHT EVERYONE HAD A BAND OR SOMETHING. BUT NOPE, GOOD THING FOR ME MY POPS HAD A LOT OF OLDIES BUT GOODIES HE'D PLAY. ALSO I GREW UP MOSTLY WITH MY GRANDMOTHER. PLAYING WITH ACTION FIGURES WHILE THE OLD LATIN JUMPOFFS BLASTED IN THE BACKGROUND. IN 1991, AS A PUERTO RICAN, 3 CRITICAL ARTISTS WERE MAKING THEIR WAY INTO THE SCENE, THE BEATNUTS, KURIOUS, AND FAT JOE. THE BEATNUTS HAD THAT SOUND AND THAT LATIN JAZZ SWAGGER. SO NOW YOU KNOW. I ALSO LOOK UP TO MY MENTOR FRED ONES.

How did "The 2 Hungry Bros" come together?
LET'S SEE, WELL SINCE THE GOVERNMENT TENDS TO PUT THEIR MINORITIES INTO AREAS KNOWN AS GHETTOES, AND GERRYMANDER US INTO DISTRICTS, BEN AND I KNEW EACH OTHER SINCE KINDEGARTEN. WE BECAME BEST FRIENDS IN FIRST GRADE BECAUSE WE'D BE THE ONLY CLOWNS IN CHURCH CLASS AND PUBLIC SCHOOL PERIOD. WE LIVED ACROSS THE STREET FROM EACH OTHER. oUR PARENTS KNEW EACH OTHER. POPS WORKED FOR A SUPERMARKET, DAGOSTINOS, AND IN THE REAGAN ERA THEY WOULD THROW GREAT BIG PARTIES WITH FREE FOOD. I WOULD ASK MY MOMS TO TAKE BEN. WE WOULD BASICALLY HORDE THE PLACE. HOT DOGS, HAMBURGERS, PIZZA, ICE CREAM. WE STILL SCOUT FOR DOPE CHEAT EAT SPOTS. EVEN BETTER NOW SINCE ONE OF US IS A VEGETARIAN. OK, PESQUETARIAN FOR ALL YOU PURISTS. BEN AND I HAVE BEEN ROLLING SINCE WE WERE YOUNG. I STARTED PUTTING OUT JOINTS IN 99'. IN THIS BUSINESS, WE MEET STRANGERS,MAKE CREWS. WELL THERE IS NOTHING TIGHTER THAN RUNNING WITH SOMEONE WHO IS BASICALLY, YA BROTHER. WHO ELSE ARE YOU GONNA TRUST. BEN AND I POOL OUR VYNIL. WHAT'S MINE IS HIS AND VICE VERSA, EXCEPT FOR OUR LADIES.

What was the concept behind Frequent Flyers?
IT INITIALLY BEGAN AS INHUMAN CONDITION, AND I WAS WORKING WITH THIS OTHER CAT AND WE CALLED OURSELVES THE FREQUENT FLYERS. INHUMAN CONDITION WAS A STATEMENT ABOUT CITY LIFE. I HAVE BEEN HEARING DIFFERENT KINDS OF RAP. EVEN HIP HOP FROM OTHER COUNTRIES. THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE I NOTICE IS THAT WHEN NON URBAN/HOOD NATIVES RHYME, THEY HAVE TO PUT ON A TOUGH VOICE. IT IS AN EMULATION. I PUT 4 WHITE KIDS ON MY ALBUM WHO WERE NOT FROM THE CITY, 3 WHOM DID NOT EMULATE. MY BIGGEST PROBLEM OR FIXATION IN LIFE IS THE TRUTH. IT'S WHY I CAN'T SCHMOOZE UP IN THE INDUSTRY PARTY BECAUSE I CAN SMELL A RAT AND I WON'T BE SUBTLE. WELL, THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE TRYING TO BE WHO THEY ARE NOT. I WANTED PEOPLE TO PERCEIVE THE RAW ESSENCE FROM LIVING IN OUR CONDITIONS. BEN AND I ARE FROM, BORN AND RAISED, THE L.E.S. WE GREW UP IN THE EARLY EIGHTIES LOWER WHERE EVERY DAY WAS THE - Eleck-New Mekanics 2:

Bio

Beginning with a belt-driven turntable and a handful of vinyl in junior high, IDE, co-founder of the national hip hop conglomerate, the Creative Juices crew, has banged out beats for the last nine years. He is also an emcee, engineer and b-boy entrepreneur. Perpetually climbing through crates at local record stores with a friend who would become a DMC world champion, IDE initially shared his symphonic vision with the world in 2002, entering his first of many beat battles. As his record collection and passion for production swelled, he sought that ever-elusive, inspired hip hop community. He found Alucard. Together IDE and Alucard formed Creative Juices to fill the gap in New York City underground rap. Based where it all began decades before, the duo produced and distributed demos, created unique, graffiti-inspired album cover art and T-shirts, hustled promotions, and built a Web site that now receives more than 30,000 hits a day. Bolstered mainly by IDE’s beat-making abilities, Creative Juices quickly expanded as more and more indie rap heads wanted to get down. Today, consistent with what hip hop’s pioneers had envisioned, the crew tackles all elements, consisting of emcees, producers, DJs and graffiti artists. In addition to IDE and Alucard, Creative Juices is comprised of L.I.F.E. Long (of Stronghold fame), Deep and Ben Boogie of 2 Hungry Brothers, Save Messiah (formerly of the Fondle ‘Em-affiliated Scienz of Life), Proper, Getty Free, Caique, Kryptonite, Lush One and others. Their first official release, the Endless Varieties mixtape, has developed a burgeoning buzz, selling thousands of copies in a short time. IDE personally exhibits many of the talents that distinguish his team. He makes beats, engineers, produces and executive produces albums, and makes rare, energized appearances on the mic — on tracks and on stage. IDE made his first album appearance as an emcee on the Creative Juices posse cut "Italian Job," off Deep and Ben Boogie’s Frequent Flyers album. He also frequently appears live alongside L.I.F.E. Long, with whom he rocked a capacity crowd at Scribble Jam 2005. IDE grinds through his days bouncing amongst a number of projects all on the table at once. As an emcee, IDE is now recording an EP with DJ Connect of the up-and-coming Elite Fleet. As executive producer, he recently completed L.I.F.E. Long’s Cuts and Collabos 2, released on Raptivism Records. He executive produced and mixed Random Violence, the new album from Jak Progresso, and is collaborating with Progresso on a forthcoming concept album, Ancient Oak — Ye Old Wisdom. IDE is also working on a new album with Savage Messiah, and produced two tracks for Shabaam Sahdeeq that will appear on Strategize, the Rawkus album’s mixtape album with DJ Revolution, set to drop shortly. Expect big things from IDE .
written by Awkword of SubwayStyles 2006....

Since 2006 Ide has gone on to do more executive production, beat making, made radio appearances, many live performances (CBGBS, Galapacos, Knitting Factory, Bowery, Crashmansion, etc etc) and released his first solo album Force Fed. Recording several new projects, plus producing for endless emcees Ide will be releasing alot more material this year. 12' coming soon. Ide recently has recorded tracks with Jeru the Damaja, Pacewon, Yah Yah, Pumpkinhead, Critical and more. Plus Ide has a new solo album with Swedish producer DJ Connect near completion, the long awaited album with Alucard is being recorded, and a compilation is in the works.
