"Utopia Review"

Utopia (Shashamane Movement, 2005)

Ijah Menelik is a cultural sing-jay from Montserrat who is actually the nephew of legendary calypso/soca artist Arrow (of "Hot Hot Hot" fame), so it's fair to say that music is in his blood. Now based in the Washington, DC area, he has ties to St. Croix band Bambu Station (lead singer Jalani Horton plays guitar on a couple of tracks here) and its label Mt. Nebo Records (His tune "Baggawire" is featured on Mt. Nebo's Talkin' Roots Volume II showcase.). His debut album Utopia starts on a mega-high note with "After da Storm," one of the best, most immediately engaging tunes I've heard in a while. It's bouncy bass line, feel-good lyrics ("After the storm comes the calm."), bluesy guitar, emotive vocals, and more than six-minute length add up to an epic roots jam. It's the type of song that's usually a once-an-album thing, but Ijah Menelik strikes similar gold with "Never Say Never," a rootsy number with a more forceful bass line and the uplifting message, "Never say you can't, do a weh you want...Dreams and aspirations, go for it!" After the first three tracks, the sound moves away from roots into more propulsive dancehall and hip-hop (including some rapping from guest MCs). But even if you're not as into hip-hop, Ijah Menelik (perhaps through the strength of his musical bloodlines) displays a knack for crafting catchy hooks that draw you into tracks like "Herb (Man)them," the funky "Who We Are," and the inventive, minimalist sound of "Civil Nile Nation." There's ample cause for excitement for the future of Ijah Menelik.

"2005 Wammies Award Recipients"

2005 Wammies
Award Recipients
The 20th Annual Washington (DC) Area Music Awards

New Emeritus Award Added to the Wammies

In many categories of music there is one person or group whose name and talent are synonymous with the style and the scene. These artists have become the royalty of their genre.

This year, the Washington Area Music Association has decided to create a new Wammie award in which these music legends can best be honored. The Emeritus award is presented to those musicians, who over the years, have repeatedly been the award recipient in their category.

The Emeritus Award is our way of expressing to those talented artists our appreciation of their immeasurable contributions to our music scene and to the world. They are indeed in a category unto themselves.

In presenting the Emeritus award, WAMA is also paving the way for the successors in that category's musical lineage. The new heirs apparent will be given a chance to emerge and the legacy of the music will continue to evolve.

DC Annual Reggae Music Awards
By Steve Kiviat

THURSDAY–SUNDAY

Reggae is in flux. Where once it seemed that the fast beats and frenetic vocal patter of dancehall were making roots reggae disappear, the latter’s laid-back one-drop riddim has recently enjoyed a resurgence in Jamaica. And here in the States, Hasidic performer Matisyahu has spread this island-born genre to the TRL crowd. The DC Annual Reggae Music Awards, now in their ninth year, have seen a few changes, too; though in years past a special panel chose winners, this year promoter Tony Java has opened up voting to the public. Sure, this won’t completely eliminate criticismwhy only one nominee for best reggae radio show?but it will allow a larger group of Washingtonians to choose winners in a spectrum of categories, everything from best reggae band and best sound system to best carryout food and best female reggae promoter. And though the awards probably won’t be honoring any Orthodox Jewish performers, events include a gospel-and-jazz-reggae brunch (11 a.m. Sunday at Zanzibar; performers include the Renewed Gospel Singers, pictured); an “After, After Party” (10 p.m. Friday at Club 1919, 1919 9th St. NW); an invite-only Saturday-night VIP bash, and of course, performances representing many of reggae’s variations. JohnStone Reggae Band, a four-time-nominated quartet with members from Jamaica, Guyana, Ghana, and the United States that released Eyes Open-Dub last year, uses echoing bass and ringing keyboard sounds to create a classic late-’70s sound. Three-time nominee Ijah Menelik also occasionally looks back, but on Utopia, the soulful vocalist from Montserrat also nods in the direction of R&B and hiphop. Join the movement of the people starting with the event’s awards night at 5 p.m. Thursday at Zanzibar, 700 Water St. SW. $20. www.dcreggaeawards.com. (Steve Kiviat)

time he released two noteworthy albums; "Sufferin' Strugglin'' and "I Am
Reggae." He has selflessly produced countless artists to date through his
operation, The Outpost Studio in Hampton, Va. His soaring vocals, angelic
harmonies and cataclysmic guitar licks will be heard on his next solo project
entitled "Utterance," which is scheduled for release in the fall of 2006.
