"Introducing: I'll be an Indian"

Musicians of the world, be warned: Australians are taking over. You may have the perpetual cool of Scandinavia or the pioneering spirit of America, but the people from the land down under have upped their game lately, and CRIKEY, is it good.

I’ll Be An Indian is just one of the many emerging Australian acts that’s making big, big waves, thanks to their first single, “Nowhere.” The Melbourne quartet plays with plenty of synths, keyboards and drum machines, but they do it with such class and nuance that the overall sound is so much more than your typical electro-pop. Even if you couldn’t care less about musical textures or orchestration, there’s other perfection to be found, whether it’s in the song’s surprising structure or the charming, repeated lines, “I want to know you’re going nowhere,” and “I want you all my own.” I could go on, but I’d be wasting the sweet time that could go towards your repeated listening of “Nowhere.” Give it a spin below. - All Things Go

Bio

Beginning from an impromptu house party jam of Devo’s ‘Whip It’ in rural Victoria, the 4 piece - I’ll be an Indian was born.

I’ll be an Indian features Todd Watts on vocals and bass, Mike Hayes on Guitar, Jesse Fitzmaurice on Synth and Oliver Leverton on sampler/beats.

The Gisborne bred 4-piece creates lush, intricate, dance-evoking pop music. Fusing synths with honeyed harmonies, hypnotic rhythms and scattered deep beats.

In September 2013 the debut single ‘Nowhere’ was released, which received national and international attention from blogs; receiving spins on Triple JJJ, KCRW Radio (Los Angeles), Triple RRR, PBS and FBI radio. ‘Nowhere’ was also featured in the Melbourne Film ‘How To Time Travel’ premiered at The Astor in April 2014.

Following the success of ‘Nowhere’, I’ll be an Indian released a self-titled EP in November to a sold out crowd at The Workers Club. Once again receiving international and national blog write-ups with a feature release on ‘All Things Go’  (USA).

Recorded with resident engineer from Oakland’s Studios, Kris Samos and producer Travis Dujame (Darts, Raudie Mcleod), it spawned 4 tracks, representing I’ll be an Indian’s diverse nature to branch out from the typical electronic sound into a more accessible adapt mature sound, all of which were mixed by Melbourne’s Adam Dempsey from Jack The Bear’s Deluxe Mastering (Sticky Fingers, Yeo, Hoodlem).

The debut EP is, according to front man Todd Watts, “a clear representation of where I’ll be an Indian’s abilities lie, but in no way stamps limitations on our sound scape, this is an EP of ‘greatest hits’ so far. Exploration of as much music a twenty something can experience”.

Since the release of their debut EP, I’ll be an Indian have seen themselves supporting Stonefield, D.D. Dumbo, and Animaux. Soon to be supporting Yeo on his National Australian tour at The Northcote Social Club.

In 2013, I’ll be an Indian performed at Queenscliff Music Festival, Victoria’s most insurgent pop, rock, folk festival. (Sticky Fingers, Northeast Party House, John Butler Trio and Saskwatch). As well as gracing the stage at Kyneton Music Festival in 2014 opening up for Yeo and Eagle and The Worm.

With the success of their debut EP in Australia, I’ll be an Indian were approached by Soulwings (Snakadaktal, World’s End Press, The Holidays) a South Korean Music Label, to distribute and sign I’ll be an Indian to the Southern Korean Territory.

Back in Australia, I’ll be an Indian is set to release a Remixes EP with each track from the EP to be released sequentially each week in the month of August. Featuring remixes by some of Australia’s amazing up and coming and established acts – Hayden Calnin, Rat & Co, De̊ǰa and Young Franco.
