Illicit Still are a 4 piece powerhouse that pays homage to the likes of Deep Purple/Black Sabbath/Led Zepplin/AC/DC/Whitesnake/Metallica/Pantera and many more of the "Monsters of Rock".
Their unique sound is driven by the fundamental desire to try and sound as much like the originals as possible therefore making them unique in they are a true tribute act but to an entire era rather than to just one band.
Their versatility is demonstrated by them attacking such numbers as Rainbow's "All Night Long" with it's high range melodic vocals and Motorhead's "Ace of Spades" with its growling delivery and powerhouse drum/guitar combo.
The Mighty K (Kevin Murphy) anchors the band with powerful rhythms and a snare crack straight from hell whilst the chugging bass of Kenny XXXX solidifies the sound into a true cacophony of heavy rock heaven.
Stevie Laing provides the riffs and solos playing the most complex pieces with consummate ease, so much so that you never even begin to notice that a majority of the numbers are in fact designed for a twin guitar set up. Witness their version of Iron Maiden's "Run To The Hills" and Metallica's "Whiskey In The Jar" where the crushing guitar sound will get even the most hard to please metal fan off their backside and launching into frenzy of head banging and air guitar exploits.
Mal The Voice (Malcolm Desira) fronts the band with an understated swagger and moves effortlessly from the gentle introduction of Whitesnake's "Love Ain't No Stranger" to the out and out bellowing of WASP's "Animal".
What is quire clear from seeing the band live is that they truly "get off" on what they do. They exude a love for the music which you cannot buy or invent. They bounce off of one another with Mal The Voice head banging and air guitaring his little heart out and he has even been known to literally bleed for his art as he becomes so wrapped up in the sound that he crashes his forehead off of the cymbals of the Mighty K.
One word to sum up this outfit? "Entertainment". Two and half hours of pure metal mayhem with an ever changing set so that the die hard fans rarely see the same show twice.
