"Artist Spotlight: I Love Monsters"

You might be familiar with this New York-dwelling indie- rock quartet. Whether you’ve caught a live performance on the Lower East Side, seen them “In Odd Places” (Jingle Punks pop-up concert) or happened be watching a little show called Entourage and heard them in the background. Or maybe even stumbled across one of their viral masterpieces on You Tube, this probably isn’t the first time you’ve heard of them and definitely isn’t the last. While they certainly fit the indie-rock build, they’ve proven that they can transcend the label and have been feeling the awesome effects of that by booking a fair deal of cable placements. From MTV’s Teen Mom to History’s American Pickers, these guys are bringing it-in the music publishing world, a fact that tickles us, greatly.

We got a chance to catch up with these guys right before their Piano’s gig on Sunday here’s what went down... - Jingle Punks

"Sonicbids Indie Pick of the Week: I Love Monsters"

Over the past two years, I Love Monsters has developed an accessible and unique blend of indie, pop, and dance rock. Each member of the band brings a different influence to the group. The varying musical tastes and styles (ranging from alt-country to punk to brit-rock) come together into one breathing musical monster. A strong DIY work ethic, paired with their intense live shows, has cemented I Love Monsters as a band to watch. We had the chance to chat with the guys about their CMJ experience, the next music technology revolution, and where they’re headed next.

When/How did you first start playing music?

Three of us met in college and reconnected after moving to NYC. We found Jeff (guitar) in the city and I Love Monsters was born! Our first jam session together was in our friend’s kitchen and we immediately knew we had something special.

What’s the best gig you ever played?

Every gig is fun. The small rooms, the big rooms, they’re all great. It’s all about the people that you’re sharing the live experience with. Our first show at Mercury Lounge in NYC is definitely up there. And our residency at the Ace Hotel this past November was a blast!

You played at CMJ this year! What was your experience like?

It was our first time attending CMJ as an artist and it was a truly satisfying experience, especially being an unsigned band from New York City. We were proud to be a part of such a popular festival. Getting to check out some of our favorite bands from all over the world was really great. The free pop chips and cocktails in the artist’s lounge weren’t half bad either.

How has social media effected the way you market/promote your music?

Social Media has broken down the geographic boundaries. Traditional media is history. We are able to execute our ideas much faster, connecting with our fans each and every day. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

What’s your prediction for the next big advancement in how we find/listen to/share music?

The cloud. Online streaming of your music collection worldwide.

What’s your next big gig coming up? When/Where?

Hopefully, SXSW 2011 and another residency at the Ace Hotel in NYC.

"Singles file: Rihanna, Drake, A-Trak, I Love Monsters, Bob Dylan"

Singles file: Rihanna, Drake, A-Trak, I Love Monsters, Bob Dylan
Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Rihanna featuring Drake: "What's My Name"

Rihanna and former boyfriend (and Chris Brown collaborator) Drake flirt energetically on this Top 40-baiting new single.

A-Trak featuring CyHi Da Prynce: "Ray Ban Vision"

Two of the more promising Spawns of Kanye unite for this '80s-loving, synth-happy track from the upcoming "Fool's Gold Vol. 1."

I Love Monsters: "Spine" (Brooks Brotha's Handbell Hero Mix)

If the Strokes were janglier and less grumpy, they might resemble this NYC indie outfit, whose finest track gets a suitably congenial remix.

Kylesa: "Tired Climb"

Do the Georgia prog metallers have a shot at becoming this year's Mastodon? Probably not! Their new single is still pretty awesome, though.

Bob Dylan: "Masters of War" (Sientific American remix)

The inscrutable icon lends his famous protest song, originally a broadside against the military-industrial complex, to the makers of mutant-and-terrorist-destroying video game "Crackdown 2."

"MTV BUZZWORTHY!"

I Love Monsters: These New Yorkers named their band after a little boy they saw crossing Sixth Avenue, finger in nose, sporting a shirt that read "I Love Monsters." The indie-rock group considers its sound to be a mixture of dance rock with pop. Influences include The Arctic Monkeys, Weezer, Phoenix, The Get Up Kids and The Beatles. A dream came true for the guys when they were given the opportunity to play at the Gramercy Theatre, and they have also recently released their Rescue EP. - MTV.com

"I LOVE MONSTERS - SPINE"

An unsigned indie-pop band from New York. Who'd of ever thought that would happen? I Love Monsters have something going for them, and that's that fact that they're as catchy as cold in winter. Their latest digital single, Spine, is a nice little tune that goes along the lines of what we've heard from the likes of Vampire Weekend and Crayon Fields. I guess it's hard to be truly original when making the purest indie-pop known to man. Still, I expect to see I Love Monsters go places in the near future. - Edge Radio 99.3FM
