"Local Legends Put Concept To The Test"

They may be young, but there's nothing amateur about the members of East Haven's own indie rock/punk band I.M. Legend

In just two short years, Brian Stanislawski, 21, Rob Larock, 20, Joe Onofrio, 20, have recorded a CD, signed with a booking agency, record label, and played countless gigs throughout the northeast. Now, the dynamic quartet has unleashed its collective, creative energy on an ambitious concept album.

Rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist Scanlon said the forthcoming album will revolve around a "1984-style love story", replete with star-crossed romance, the menace of big government, and a message of personal empowerment. "We like staging our own revolution on CD," said Scanlon. Scanlon said he developed the concept his head for years, but has never written it down.

"Rob makes the most creative stuff out off the top of his head," said drummer and backup vocalist Onofrio. "it makes [writing and recording songs] more dynamic because it just evolves."

Scanlon said that his band mates often contribute to the his original concept, adding plot points, deciding what songs should coincide with what parts of the story, and strengthening the project along the way.

"We can tailor each song to different parts of the story," explained lead guitarist and backup vocalist LaRock.

Added Onofrio, "It's like a movie soundtrack without the movie.. We can intensify certain parts of the story with music."

Onofrio-who with Scanlon also operates a recording studio for local artists out of his basement-said colaborating on the concept album has proven a natural step for the band's evolution.

"We just knew we needed to step it up on a personal level," said LaRock, agreeing that the concept will reflect the band's growth.

"We've gotten to the point as a band where we don't settle for anything," said LaRock. "We all have to love it 100 percent to keep it."

While the band members each have their own unique musical tates, they said their differences only make their songs better.

"We come up with a lot more complicated and interesting music because we all bring our own musical tastes to it," said Scanlon.

LaRock said their ranging preference give them "a real sonic pallet" from which to create.

The men said they couldn't estimate when their album would be released. Instead of worrying about a schedule, they're devoting their time to crafting the cleanest, freshest sound possible.

In the meantime, they're looking forward to their upcoming live shows and possibly taking their eclectic beat west, where, thanks to MySpace, they already have quite the following.

"We're really a live band," said Onofrio. "The More people that get into it, the more we get into it. We feed off of their energy." - Shore Publishing
