"imp - Sewerpop! (How The Castle Was Stormed) (EP Review)"

imp are a band that really have something special; describing the Wakefield 5-piece as indie, whilst probably vaguely accurate, doesn’t do them justice. Sure, firm indie-pop riffs anchor the band’s sound, but a tide of psychedelic textures, iridescent sounds and a depth of influences keep the Imp ship afloat on choppy waters.

Opening with a lap of ambient waves and seagulls, ‘The Timings All Wrong’ kicks into life with a sumptuously modern indie strum (not quite Los Campesinos! but not far off, either), before lurching into a completely unexpected psychedelic binge of distorted layers - possibly channelling early-Pavement, but more contemporary, rich and exciting.

Second track, ‘Back From Battle’ is a stunning effort of jumbled contrasts. It begins with a melancholic organ hum, before converting itself into a shimmering indie number, with another catchy-as-hell guitar hook. Once again, though, the track quickly leaps wayward, with a chunky riff accompanying pop punk-styled gang vocals, before it breaks down into a sort of slurry comprised of all of the above. It is a busy track, but balanced with complete confidence.

‘Sharkbay Nevermore’ follows on by introducing a slightly more vintage psychedelic philosophy to ‘Sewerpop!’ - prancing keys, reversed loops, slow build-ups – all of that stuff, but transposed into Imp’s signature indie style. ‘Call Of The Wild’ then acts as a neat closer to the EP. Probably the poppiest track on show, with synthy dance floor references which add a slightly different flavour to the music.

Sewerpop! (How The Castle Was Stormed) is an absolute cracker of an EP; it references varied influences without ever compromising the band’s overall sound. Imp are starting to gain a justified reputation in the right circles – they should be huge, and if they are able to continually produce music of this calibre, they probably will be. - Croon

Bio

There was a transitional period for us when we went from being a joke band writing songs for our own amusement about people we didnt like or respect, to a serious alt/pop/indie/rock group. but this was an unconscous evolution, we just realised that our best material was fundamentally more serious and so about about 2 1/2 - 3 years ago we started writing better songs and better lyrics. it only took us 1 year to redefine ourselves, to ourselves.

now we live in Wakefield, England and release records on a small independant record label, Philophobia. Last year we played a show in London and took 60 people with us. We have been featured on XFM, Amazing radio and BBC radio.

Our latest ep was voted into the best eps and albums of the year by Croon, a local music website, who said this:

'imp are a band that really have something special' croon

'16 Years, a perfect indie-pop tune' Soundblab

'imp create a totally captivating atmosphere, yet somewhere along the line they also manage to turn it into happy little indie pop songs' Rhubarb Bomb
