Still working on that hot first release.

Feeling a bit camera shy

The band was born in late 2007 when violinist Katie Glassman returned to America from studying Gypsy Jazz in France with the renowned violinist Didier Lockwood. Upon her return she met Guitarist M’hamad El Menjra, a native of Morroco that was studying jazz in Denver. Growing up in Morroco and France, M’hammad was already well versed in Arabic, Flamenco, and European Gypsy jazz music. This led to a very natural musical connection between the two musicians and many collaborations have ensued ever since their meeting.
When they decided to look for a band Katie suggested an old high-school friend to play bass, Charles Mertens. Charles and Katie both attended the Denver School of Arts where they studied classical music and jazz in a high-school setting. It wasn’t until many years later that they reconnected to form the band Impromptu. Soon the three musicians decided to bring in Gabriel Mervine on trumpet who completely expanded the band’s sound with his knowledge of jazz language and virtuosic playing. They played a few shows as a quartet and then decided to invite drummer Mark Emmons to play in the band. The current line-up of Impromptu was then completed.
Impromptu is a band of diverse styles. While they are primarily rooted in Gypsy and American jazz, listeners can expect to hear many other musical influences such as Latin, African, Klezmer, Arabic, and Indian stylings. The band performs concerts, swing dances, workshops, and multi-media presentations on the life of Django Reinhardt.

In the last year, Impromptu has performed at Swallow Hill, Dazzle Jazz Club, The Mercury Cafe, The Irish Snug, Appaloosa Grill, The Full Belly, Slattery’s Irish Pub, and The King Center at the University of Colorado at Denver.

Impromptu is:

Katie Glassman - violin
Gabriel Mervine - trumpet
M'hammad El Menjra - guitar
