Bio

In Darkness is a four-piece band that tends to headbang on the line between rock and metal. Their wide range of musical influences span both decades and genres, including anything from Jimi Hendrix to Pearl Jam, from Tool to Pantera, from Beethoven to Cannibal Corpse, and just about everywhere in between. For almost ten years, In Darkness has been crafting and perfecting their debut album "My Hatred on Display"(released Jan 26, 2013). Plagued with a history of disappearing band members, they now rival spinal tap with their sheer amount of ex members.
Formed in 2003 by singer, Cory Sawchyn, In Darkness has steadily gained an amazingly loyal fan base, with familliar faces at every show, and an undying support for local music. It all began with a highschool talent show, at which Cory performed an origional acoustic song he co-wrote with good friend, Kent Zacharuk. Immediately afterward, as the lighters swayed, Cory was approached by the drummer and bassist from one of the school's jazz bands to play guitar and sing in a new rock band. Cory had one rule overall, "No covers.... ever."
They soon started writing, and within weeks had the first four songs for the album, "My Hatred on Display". A short while later, Cory put down his guitar to concentrate on vocals, and brought two new players to the band. Current lead guitarist, Ryan Sawchyn, brought a whole new dynamic to Indarkness' sound, with influences from greats like Jimi Hendrix and The Doors. He had played with the band "Neighborhood Threat" for the previous 3 years, and soon became an integral part in In Darkness' new music.
About a year and a half in, the first of the lineup changes began. Losing a drummer and the rythm guitar, the band was in for some hard times. Over the next five years, In Darkness would go through a total of seven drummers, playing a handful of shows with each, while trying to get into the studio. "We have always had a history of putting a ton of pressure on new members,", says singer, Cory Sawchyn, "because that is how we know if they really want to do this as a career. Ryan can agree... We only gave him a matter of days to learn our songs before his first show with In Darkness"
In 2009, current drummer, Andy Silljer, joined the band. With influences such as John Bonham, Neil Peart, and Buddy Rich, he fit perfectly into the fold. With the album finally written, In Darkness began recording "My Hatred on Display" at Farmageddon studios, just outside of Edenwold in the summer of 2011.
This, however, would not be the end of the lineup changes for In Darkness. Shortly after finishing their tracks for "My Hatred on Display", the band lost their bassist due to both internal and external pressures. "Being that close to having your first album recorded and having a band member walk away," says singer, Cory Sawchyn, "is a pretty tragic thing. Especially after all the years of hard work and sacrifice it took to get there."
In Darkness began their search for a new bass player, and within weeks began jamming with current bassist, Corey McDonald. Corey had been playing in a progressive thrash metal band with Andy a couple years before he joined In Darkness. He quickly found out why they call themselves a "pressure band", as he was given 3 weeks to learn and re-record the entire album, which he did masterfully.
After almost ten years in pursuit of their first album, In Darkness decided to contact Howie Weinberg, mastering artist for albums such as "Master of Puppets"(Metallica), "Gish"(Smashing Pumpkins), and "Cowboys From Hell" (Pantera) to name a few. He seemed quite interested in the band's sound and agreed to master "My Hatred on Display". Needless to say, the band was ecstatic.
Now, with album in hand, In Darkness is planning their first Candaian tour for this summer, which they have dubbed the "Youth Pollution Tour".
