"Kerrang(Review by Mat Devine)"

Chicago alt-rockers Kill Hannah will be hitting the UK next month and asked K! to help them find a new band to support them.

We are happy to announce that the band have selected Belfast quintet In Elegance to join them on the four-date trek.

"There were so many entries, it was really impossible to choose just one," Kill Hannah frontman Mat Devine tells K!. "In the end, we elected In Elegance, because I see in them the very beginnings of a band that can evolve beyond any specific scene and I think they have great potential to do big things down the line.

"This tour could be a great learning experience for them, and I'm stoked to see them live, he adds. "It was a really painful decision. What is the term you guys use? Gutted? Like a fish that's had it's guts pulled out? Yeah, that's how I felt, having to choose only one-- there is so much young talent out there."

"This is amazing news, to be given the chance to support some of our heroes is huge," says In Elegance guitarist Shea Braniff. "We sure as hell don't intend on letting Kill Hannah down, so anyone going had best prepare for an awesome show!"

They play:

March
08 Manchester Club Academy
09 Birmingham Library
10 London O2 Islington Academy
11 Bristol Fleece

"Ears To The Ground"

I learned of In Elegance's existence when they won a competition run by Kerrang! magazine to support one of my favourite ever bands, Kill Hannah, on their upcoming UK tour. I checked out their music, then I caught up with singer Taryn Walker to find out a bit more about the Belfast band, which is completed by Shea Braniff (guitar), Ryan McCormack (guitar), Chris Weir (bass) and Ariff Kabir (drums)...

So, you've been selected by Kill Hannah to support them on their upcoming UK tour. How did you find out and what was your initial reaction?
I had no idea Shea had even entered the Kerrang! competition! He logged into our emails and had a look of shock on his face, I thought something awful had happened and then he just got up, screamed it out, and we all started jumping up and down! We saw Kill Hannah back in 2008 at the Limelight, so getting to play with one of our favourite bands is really a dream come true. We are still completely in shock at it.

What can people expect from your live shows?
We try to make our live show as fun as possible for the crowd, with myself and Chris trying to get off the stage as much as possible to interact with them during our set. Making sure the crowd are having fun is the most important thing to us and we try to improve our interaction with each gig we do. We also try to include a surprise cover for everyone to sing along to.

You released a self titled EP in January, do you feel it's been a success for you?
Neal Calderwood at Manor Park Studios is an absolute genius, and we are very grateful for all the work he has put into our EP. We are really pleased with the way it has turned out, getting airtime on BBC Introducing before it was released was amazing, so thanks to Phil Taggart and Rory McConnell for that! We've just finished two Irish dates with Young Guns and a show with Jody Has a Hitlist, and we are off on the Kill Hannah tour next month so we feel like this EP has had so many good outcomes and we can't wait to get the next one out!

You guys have only been a band for just over a year, what is your advice for other newish bands and bands that have been trying to get noticed for longer than you have?
Now, we can't go revealing secrets of the trade, can we? Just kidding! I think it's just important to make sure you have a tight live set, and we wouldn't do any more than one cover in a set. Finding your own style of music and adding little twists to things will make you stand out. Don't forget about image as well! Make sure if you are getting photos done you know where to go for location and what way you want to be portrayed, all outfits are planned and colour co-ordinated beforehand for us. We also colour co-ordinate on stage, but then again, that's maybe just the girl inside me being picky!

OK, so a little more about your music itself. How do you describe your music?
This is the problem we always have, trying to describe it! It's basically alternative rock, but we haven't a clue what sub-genre. iTunes puts it in Blues, so everyone has a different idea of what they think it sounds like, but I guess that's a good thing, right?

Where does your lyrical and musical inspiration come from?
Musically, Shea is very much into Death Cab For Cutie, Ryan would be into the oldies like The Beatles and U2, Chris is more into heavier bands like Funeral For a Friend and Ariff would listen to pretty much anything, though I know he is quite partial to a bit of Nickelback! Lyrically I prefer to let people interpret the words in their own way, instead of telling the stories behind them because they're very personal, the guys don't even know what the songs are about!

And finally, in a sentence, why should the readers of Ears To The Ground check you out?
We would love it for you guys to check us out as every listen and every download counts!

You can find In Elegance on their official website, Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, iTunes or BigCartel.
Or, you can catch them on tour with Kill Hannah next month (if you're in the UK). If you're not in the UK, then watch this space! - Ears To The Ground

"Ep Review 5/5"

When you think of girl fronted rock bands, you think of Paramore, Evanescence, maybe even The Pretty Reckless. Not in this case. Here, In Elegance come into their own. With their newly released 3 track self-titled EP, the Belfast 5-piece have found their own sound, and won’t be giving it up anytime soon.

The vocals are simple, yet powerful, with perfectly fitting guitar sounds and drums for the finished product.
Putting Easier Said Than Done as the opener to this release is perfect, it takes listeners right in to the action, which leads into heavier sound of Burn Bright, Fade Fast which is a completely different sound altogether. As stated before, the vocals on Open Your Eyes are haunting and my, what an addictive song.
The three tracks as a whole have the ability to leave you wanting more, much more.

A brilliant new sound, exactly what we need. I'm glad they don't sound like anyone else and aren't just going down the same route. They are going to be huge. 5/5 - The Music and the Mic BloSspot

"Review"

This three track EP is a truly stellar performance for a debut work. The Belfast four-piece are not quite like any band I’ve heard before. They don’t truly follow the Paramore branch of female-fronted bands, nor the Evanescence or VersaEmerge routes, and yet still following the genre so well. The opening track ‘Easier Said Than Done’ demonstrates my point wonderfully, blending truly elegant arpeggios with powerful chord mashing choruses. - Top Hat Magazine

Bio

In Elegance are a female fronted alternative rock band from Belfast, Northern Ireland.
In January 2012 they released their eponymous debut E.P. which has been met in the short time since its release, with widespread critical acclaim and led to prestigious supporting slots on national tours with established artists such as Young Guns and Kill Hannah.

History
In Elegance formed in early 2011, all five members having been involved in minor projects previously, now seeking to be genuinely different to anything existing on the scene. The band quickly began writing, gigging both in Ulster and the Republic of Ireland, and recording singles on a shoestring budget. These early recordings, though basic, gained BBC Radio one, BBC Radio Ulster, and Belfast stations Blast 106 FM and Radio Feilte.

In the autumn of 2011, In Elegance went to Manor Park Studios to record their Debut EP with Neal Calderwood(Fighting With Wire, Jody Has A Hitlist, General Fiasco). Once produced, it instantly attracted the attention of the local BBC Introducing DJs, who began circulation of the tracks prior to release on both BBC Radio One and BBC Radio Ulster.

In Elegance, as well as being a popular live act- recently having been chosen as the main support for the Irish dates of established group Young Guns’ Bare Bones tour, as well as receiving additional recognition from Kerrang! Magazine who, following an international search, recommended In Elegance for a highly contested supporting slot with U.S. alt. rockers Kill Hannah for the entirety of their U.K. tour. Mat Devine has quoted “In the end, we elected In Elegance, because I see in them the very beginnings of a band that can evolve beyond any specific scene and I think they have great potential to do big things down the line”

In Elegance have been in studio recording their next EP due out in April and have released their latest "Let Me Go" in March to positive reviews..
