Ingo Star Cruiser

first release on ultra indie label moshi moshi..a great name for a label. the music - well, scratchy guitar based songs and strange melodies which at first do not appeal and require several exposures before the weirdness subsides and the listener accepts the excellence within.
there is a variety across the short 30 odd minutes which iswonderfully challenging.it's been many years since i heard a casio rinky dink drum pattern - nice. across most of the songs the vocals are treated, phased, slightly distorted, which always appeals as it adds an interesting twist and avoids the standard indie guitar pop song sound. i have yet to decipher what the words are all about,i'm sure they are obtuse like the artowrk on the cover.
i expected lo-fi tweeness - instead this is lo-fi greatness.
very original..and increasingly listenable with time.

In the race for the prize that was the PlayLouder Glastonbury Unsigned competition you, darling public, chose The Boxer Rebellion and Ingo Star Cruiser as your Will and Gareth. So which does that make Pete Ingo? Well, during 'Hands Up Who's Happy At The Airport' he refers to himself "dancing like a dick" which, having seen the 'Spirit In The Sky' video, should by rights make him Gareth. (Disappointingly, though, we're spared Pete's purportedly dickish dancing. Aw!) Then again, he's got a remarkably rangey voice, switching from seedy Bobby Gillespie whisper-rasp to a Curt Smith-style gusset-clamping woo with affable regularity, which is much more of a Will thing to do. Though it's unlikely that either of the pair would ever have gone on stage and said "Do I look like I'm bricking it?".

And, while we come to think of it, it's fairly certain that neither'll ever show up somewhere and sing 'My Name Is Shit' or, indeed, 'Fucked' (introduced with the charming remark "You all look very... This one's called 'Fucked'!"), but such is par for the course in world of Ingo. His a-man-some-twangs-and-a-DAT setup's liable to win him comparisons to the Badly Drawn Boy of those early hen's-teeth EPs, but he's actually a somewhat different kettle of cod, still hanging by his fingertips to the leftest edge of pop but in a far less gnarly and rather more eerily questive way, with him singing self-effacingly about events taking less-than-welcome turns as 'Da Da Da'-ish bips go pulsing past or strumming sunsheeeeeeeeyineily across cloudy settings. Plus! unlike anybody else - at least since Eno's little 70s blip - he's obsessed with airports. Fair enough, really, as long as it leads to songs like the marvellous 'Wake Up Rub', a fantastically 'Strawberry Fields'ian travelogue that, possibly even to Mr Ingo's surprise, niffs a bit of hit. An idol-in-waiting then? Maybe so. Top choice regardless, voters!
