"Inkwell - Kneesocks - Exclaim.ca"

Vancouver, BC-based producers Inkwell (aka Cam Smith begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting and Ryan Trann) deliver Kneesocks, the first EP to be released on new western Canadian label Danksoul. Cam Smith and Ryan Trann met while studying audio engineering. Performing around western Canada since 2006, together they create dance floor-friendly house and techno by improvising with various formats, including their own hardware and software creations. Their three-track EP starts off with "Kozeark," a deep tech-house track full of slow building rhythmic clicks over a solid funk groove. The self-titled track is comparable to Montréal's Akufen for its experimental, funky micro-cuts and playful, rhythmic, two-stepping aesthetic. Mathew Jonson's younger brother, Hrdvsion, remixes the last track. Hrdvsion transforms his remix of "Kneesocks" into a glitchy, grooving track with chunky, driving, harmonious progressions to carry it through. Danksoul delivers a strong first release. Hopefully the quality of this is a sign of what's to come.

"Inkwell - Kneesocks - Rewind.muzik.fr"

- Rewind.muzik.fr

Bio

In 2004, cinch (Cam Smith begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting) and Ryan Trann met while studying audio engineering at the Art Institute of Vancouver-Burnaby. They became friends and created “Inkwell”, a product of two minds from vastly different backgrounds. The two bring their musical flavours together to produce a unique combination of techno and house; aggressiveness and subtelty. Rocking homemade gear in their live performance, these two Canadians are involved in all aspects of techno production. Truly jacks of all trades, you’ll find them designing sounds, hardware, and software, all as a means to an end; a seriously bumpin’ dancefloor. Minimal Techno is the backbone of their set, but it often veers in other more diverse territory without warning. Their spontaneity and improvisation when playing live, provides for a unique experience each time and the energy they put forth on stage translates to the studio effortlessly. Their productions vary, mixing genres and ideals, but in the end it always comes out sounding fresh and clean. Based in Vancouver, they’ve been performing in and around western Canada since 2006 as a part of the Danksoul Recordings crew, with whom they release with. Recently they have had releases on Pheek’s label Archipel Musique and Mathew Jonson’s Wagon repair. Currently they are slated to release Danksoul Recordings first 12” entitled “Inkwell – Kneesocks” with support from Hrdvsion as a remixer. Set to come out in February 2010.
