Biography

Into the Real is an all-original melodic rock band based in Wheaton, IL.
Their sound is truly unique owing to the diverse backgrounds of the musicians. While songwriter Dan Smolla brings in folk, americana and rock vibes, Juliana Cesano's deep melodic voice embodies all the warmth and fascination of her native Argentina. Meanwhile, the impeccable rhythm section is represented by a conservatory trained drummer Fred Reich and a seasoned jazz musician Steven Hashimoto. Bassist and producer, Steven Hashimoto, has been a highly visible part of Chicago's jazz scene since 1976. He has also anchored the late-night jam sessions at The Green Mill on Fridays for over 16 years. He has recorded with many local bands, and appeared at almost every jazz venue in Chicago.

The band members mix all of these personal features to let their own brand of sound come alive, defying musical conventions: folk and americana elements are tainted with jazz influences as intricate sonic patterns and unusual melodies develop over the songs. The song-writing focuses on space and simplicity and is characterized by open guitar tunings, while the lyrics are influenced by a deep love for American literature, mysticism, and poetry from various cultures, especially South America.Continue Reading

Sometimes Lately

Written By: Dan Smolla

And I meant what we already said the first time
with our eyes
And I meant what neither of us said as we crossed the
Menomenee bridge and we watched
the storm roll in
and we stood still and faced the Wisconsin wind
The thunder laughed and its echo grinned
Sometimes lately I get by just by playing a part
Sometimes lately I get by just by staying apart
Sometimes lately there ain’t nothing like another heart
The dark dove low like a hawk
but we moved slow and easy
and we almost started to talk
but instead we just watched the pines
we watched em dip dance and wind
we watched em dip dance and wind
Sometimes lately I get by just by playing a part
Sometimes lately I get by just by staying apart
Sometimes lately there ain’t nothing like another heart
The rain made us walk again
but we moved slow and easy
as if that slow pace had become our friend
and because we knew it had all been said for us
And by the way in my dream you’re beautiful
And by the way in my dream there you are
Sometimes lately I get by just by playing a part
Sometimes lately I get by just by staying apart
Sometimes lately there ain’t nothing like another heart
You make my memory rain true.

Baby

Written By: Dan Smolla

The baby's sleeping on the mother's breast
and the mother's dreaming of a shadier rest
and by the lake at night her man stands
watching in wonder as the lake expands

and then she whispers and he hears
All of her secrets and all of her fears
and he goes home he goes home
to admit it may not be what it seems
but he says i will take this dream

And i was the tiger who cut the lamb
just to feel the sensation of some warm blood on my hands
i had to throw my fingers down my mouth
swallow so hard til there was a carnival in my clouds

They say after you wake up
they'll be a shake up
you'll have to make up
your own mind
they say after you wake up
they'll be a shake up
you'll have to make up your own mind

Artists only talk to other artists
about artistic things big
butchers only talk to other butchers
about the price of a pig
so whatcha gonna do?
you gonna put your night clothes on
put your night clothes on lately
and hum your favorite rock and roll song

And we’ll go home go home
to admit it may not be what it seems
but we will we will take this dream

Little Children with the Power of Gods

Written By: Dan Smolla

We are little children with the power of gods
We are little children with the power of gods
We are little children with the power of gods
We are little children with the power of gods
We’re gonna make mistakes we’re gonna hurt each other
In fear we’ll try to control and we’ll hurt each other
But I think we can get past this
And I think we can outlast this
And I think that love is forever
I think that’s what we’re here to remember
We are little children with the power of gods
We are little children with the power of gods
We are little children with the power of gods
We are little children with the power of gods
So let’s sit right down here on this earth and try not to judge
So let’s sit right down here on this earth and try not to judge
We’re gonna make mistakes we’re gonna hurt each other
In fear we’ll try to control and we’ll hurt each other
But I think we can get past this
And I think we can outlast this
And I think that love is forever
I think that’s what we’re here to remember
We are growing children with the power of love
We are growing children with the power of love
We are growing children with the power of love
We are growing children with the power of love
So let’s sit right down here on this earth and try not to judge
So let’s sit right down here on this earth and try not to judge

River of Love

Written By: Dan Smolla

Nothing’s been handed
here we’ve all landed
here on this planet
see
What’s granted to us
with a sacred smile
maybe it’ll last a while

Chorus:
Cause sometimes even the river of love
needs more rain to give you a shove
with enough force to wake you up

Cause sometimes the river of love
needs more rain to give you a shove
with enough force to wake you up

That you might enjoy the dream
you might enjoy the dream

Of the river of love do do do

You can just point me home there
where the river flows there
you can just point me home there
where the river flows

A little bit of laughter
a little bit of tears
can wash these bones
like a water spear

That will take you through the years
That will take you through the years

(chorus)
Of the river of love do do do

Sound and Rain

Written By: Dan Smolla

Sound and rain and finally the clouds
come to visit the musician
deliver him to a boat of sound
and he laughs at knowing water again
And the winds from a distance
blow ocean drops against him
And the winds from a distance
blow ocean drops against him
So that it feels
like the world's a rain bird and flying
And it feels
like the world's a rain bird in flight
Within the bell of his saxophone
a gold ring note and calling him home
The sound of life in a single reed
the secrets of all living wood
CHORUS
Out of sight but just bright enough
to feel the urgent burning
Out of sight but just bright enough
to feel the urgent turning
He breathes a note and the moon
explodes the sky in a rain light tune
Music on his body songs him
in the calm of a dancing dawn
CHORUS
Out of sight but just bright enough
to feel the urgent burning
Out of sight but just bright enough
to feel the urgent turning
Out of sight but just bright enough
Out of sight but just bright enough

Bundle

Written By: Dan Smolla

Wrap it up in a bundle all the light
Wrap it up in a bundle all the light
of the stars... stars
of the stars... stars
Take it and pour it through the funnel...all the light
Take it and pour it through the funnel...all the light
of your heart...heart
of your heart...heart
Drip it out in a puddle...carry's you down
Drip it out in a puddle...carry's you down
to your chart...chart
to your chart...chart
Pour it til you've crossed
pour it til you've crossed
from your head down to your toes
And you lost all you thought you had to know
but you're back, you're back, you're back just in time for the show
(2x)
Restack the tracks you lacked
when in fact they sat where you sat
Wrap it up in a bundle all the light
Wrap it up in a bundle all the light
