"In Transit’s Life After 4:30"

By day they work for Red Deer Transit, but by night Roger Bouchard, Murray Larsen and Wayne Holt get a little more funky. Along with Laura Clark and Joe Ferraro, the three make up In Transit, a band that rocks the Arlington Inn regularly and has opened for acts like April Wine, Julian Austin and Corb Lund.

Four years ago, the group of friends started jamming together, reviving a love for music that had been put on the back burner for too long. A couple of early gigs for The City started In Transit on a route that has led to over 100 professional shows and the recent launch of their first CD, “In Transit: Unsafe At Any Speed.” To add another City connection, the CD cover design was created by Leigh Ann Khoshaba, GIS Analyst.

“Unsafe At Any Speed” showcases original tunes by Bouchard, Larsen, Holt and Clark, and features a great mix of sounds, with Clark and Larsen alternating lead vocals. The songs range from lively country-rock to more contemplative songs that explore ties to the past and to the land.

“The fact that we can tailor our shows to different styles of music gives us a wider coverage area and means we work a lot more,” says Bouchard. “It’s kind of funny to be opening for Julian Austin one week and April Wine two weeks later.”

Sharing the stage with April Wine was a little surreal. “During our set I saw them watching us from the doorway, which was a bit unnerving,” says Bouchard. “Afterward, they asked questions about our band and commented that they were impressed.” He grins, remembering. “This was my favorite band as a kid and I can’t imagine a group of guys I would want to meet more. To have them turn out to be decent folks was a bonus.”

In Transit’s weekends are booked with performances, and after celebrating their successful CD launch on November 8, the band returns to the Arlington regularly for jam night. Bouchard attributes much of his increased musical involvement to the support of his wife, Christine Kosowick, who also works for The City of Red Deer.

It’s a busy life, but it’s one the band loves. “Most importantly, we’re all friends,” says Bouchard. “We’re all having fun with this, and we plan to carry on making noise.”

Catch In Transit every second Thursday evening at the Arlington for jam night, or check out www.geocities.com/intransitband for other performance dates. You can pick up “Unsafe At Any Speed” from any band member, but you’ll want to check out their live act, too. In Transit will make you feel like dancing.
