Ion

BandRockWorld

Ion has progressive-rock roots. Some style-influences include Hard-rock, Jazz Be-bop, Afro-Cuban jazz, Latin, Punk, Metal, Western Classical music(Baroque, Classical, Modern, etc.), Funk and pop. Although the main sound is rock the other styles feature strongly. A good description is "World-Rock".

Biography

The universal appeal of ion's sound is it's greatest feature.

Our music is born from our passion for life and all things life-related. As such, it's difficult to put a lid on the excitement it carries over to any audience. "Man, i't's not the kind of music I normally listen to, but the energy is fantastic. I Love it!", is something we often hear at gigs and the reaction is the same from age 16 to 60.

Stemming from the very different musical backgrounds of the members, what hits the ear is a unique blend of sound with a strong rhythmic foundation.

Elben (Lead vox,Keyboards) was born into music with his father - Ben Sr. - being a famous local jazz pianist, composer/arranger. Ben's influences are diverse.
From prog-rock outfits Dream Theatre and Toto to Jazz pianists Oscar Peterson and Chick Corea.

Cobus (Bass) counts among his influences Victor Wooten, Mark King(Level 42), Stefan Lessard(DMB), and many more.

Paul Gioia(Lead vox, guitar), soon to be a graduate in Classical guitar at the University of Pretoria, is influenced by anything he's ever heard but mostly loves listening to Iron Maiden, Messhugah, Rush, etc.

Francois Lessing (drums/percussion), a graduate in jazz at Tshwane University of Technology loves listening to Toto, Michel Camilo, Dire Straits, Vivaldi, Rachmaninov, Simon Phillips, Vinnie Collaiuta, Steve Smith, Steve Gadd, Carter Beauford to name a few.

Putting a name to what this 4 piece sounds like is about as easy as saying "lemongrass" backwards quickly. That made choosing a name even harder. After much deliberation it was decided that "It's OUR Name" and the rest is history.

Lyrics

Who I am

Written By: Elben Schutte

As simple as the thruth should be
so clear the way that I will stand with me.
My eyes are inward seeing my mind
And trace a perfect labyrinth in time.

What seemed to be an obvious known
has come to be a relic that I own.
Just stand and question by my skin
who I am asnswered only from within

You can love me, hate me and I
I will be who I am.
It will not change around me and still
I will be who I am.

As simple as your truth is seen,
so complicated it has come to be.
Chameleon-nature
and see yourself fade from who you are

Who I am

Written By: Elben Schutte

Verse 1

As simple as a truth should be.
So clear the way that I will stand with me.

My eyes are inward, see my mind,
to trace a perfect labyrinth inside.

What seemed to be an obvious known
has come to be a relic that I own,

to stand unquestioned by my skin,
who I am answered only from within.

Chorus
You can love me hate me.
I will be who I am
It will all change around me, still
I will be who I am.

Verse 2
As simple as your truth is seen
so complicated it has come to be.

Chameleonate yourself too far
and watch yourself fade from who you are.

Pick hearts or spades whichever suits your needs
from the tattered pack of personalities.

you puppetering your own limbs
to fit the loved stage of worldy whims

Chorus
You can love me hate me.
I will be who I am
It will all change around me, still
I will be who I am.

Instrumental Bridge

Chorus
You can love me hate me, I. I will be who I am
It will all change around me and still
I will be who I am.

Coda
Your eyes are inward, see your mind
embrace the perfect labyrinth inside....
