"What are you listening to, Madeleine Elfenbein?"

Iris Ornig is a young German-born, Swiss-trained jazz musician who is carrying on the fine tradition of bassist-composers (Charles Mingus and Jaco Pastorius are two). Her debut album, “New Ground,” out this year, offers up eight original compositions alongside standards from Ellington and Cole Porter, a Johnny Cash tune and a German lullaby. Though her influences are eclectic, her approach to jazz is straightforward, combining inventive, wistful melodies with subtle Latin beats, presented in uncomplicated arrangements (you can listen to one of her best songs, “Grateful Friendship,” here). And she works with great musicians: her quartet includes Brandon Wright on sax, Cecilia Coleman on piano, and McClenty Hunter on drums.
