"Iron Lyon"

DJ Iron lyon has been making a big noise lately downtown djing at the weekly New York, New York party that we sponsor, as well as recently making cameos at Santos on a handful of Fridays, as well as his regular haunts in and around the East Village and Williamsburg. Just as of late, he's been djing with the likes of Biz Markie, Kid Capri, Questlove, Whoo Kid and more.

A little while back, he dropped this 1992: Young World mix, in memory of a year that produced many of hip-hop's finest songs and moments. This mix is also a tribute to the New York's 1992 Party, founded by the downtown sweetheart Va$htie and Oscar, where Iron Lyon and many other downtown DJ soldiers have blazed the wheels. We've been bumping this 1992: Young World in Frank's Chop Shop and at the office for a couple of months now, and now we have it for you for FREE DOWNLOAD.

There is no text tracklisting, but this mix included the likes of Gang Starr, Kool G Rap, Das EFX, Showbiz And A.G., Brand Nubian, Tribe Called Quest, Main Source and more. - Frank 151

"Iron Lyon – Time Capsule (Album)"

I can honestly say I’ve never heard of the Brooklyn based MC/DJ Iron Lyon. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t been doing his thing in NYC though. It’s just that I wasn’t ever put on until now. And considering Statik Selektah me gave his personal co-sign, I already knew I was in for some dope hip hop while downloading. Two-thirds of my way through and that is exactly what this is. Fans of that Golden Era are gonna want to grab this asap. Features include Craig G, C-Rayz Walz, Vordul Mega and Tableek. - 2dopeboyz.com

"A Rhymin DJ"

Iron Lyon steps to the mic with the pedigree and a purist. The MC traces a DJ’s descent through bars, hooks, booms and baps to arrive at the microphone fully-versed in Hip Hop’s hallowed history, from old to true to new schools, down to the uneasy, postmodern present, where Hip Hop stands at a precarious crossroads.
Iron Lyon is here to reinforce the values of authenticity, honor, truth, and unity. He’s here for Hip Hop, all of it, shouting out each element. The weight of his words and heavy flow show that for Iron Lyon, Hip Hop is more than a job, an opportunity, or scheme – it is a calling. A veteran of vinyl and DJ of NYC’s competitive club circuit, Lyon knows the stakes and the breaks of both beats and opportunity. As a longtime mix-and-scratch-master, Lyon takes the title MC seriously — he speaks to grace the beat, to add on to what is already there, and to motivate the crowds and lonesome listeners by speaking his truths. He may be an emerging emcee, but a new jack he is not. Iron Lyon’s style and lyrics reveal a deep love and admiration for what has come before him.
In an interview with BrooklynBodega.com, Iron Lyon discusses his journey to Hip Hop, his influences and how his deejay experience prepared him for rocking the mic.
BB: Let’s start here…can you take us on a tour of your journey to and through Hip Hop? How did you get to it? How did it get to you? Where did you start with this music until releasing your mixtape?

Iron Lyon: I started listening to Hip Hop when I was 7 or 8 but it wasn’t until 7th grade that I felt a calling to be a part of it. My cassette collection was building and I had started making mixtapes with tape decks. Around the time the movie Juice came out I was determined to learn to DJ. I worked for $4/hr for 200 hrs, bought a set up & started teaching myself. In the process I started listening to the instrumentals on the vinyl and it wasn’t [long] before me & my friends were writing songs and freestyling all the time. I quickly found my niche DJing parties & making mixtapes. As for Emceeing, I was mostly writing songs and freestyling at open mics & battles but I wasn’t doing much serious recording.
I did this for a long time until a fellow Emcee & friend named Leftist was killed in a hit and run and, at his memorial, there were copies of his debut album titled “Whats Left”. This made me realize that you never know when your time is coming and that if I was to pass I would want to leave a tangible piece of myself behind. I began writing and recording the album Time Capsule without a clue as to what would come of it, only a hope that people would dig it up at some point; that just making the music would be a success in itself and no matter what came of it, I was creating an artifact that will still exist when I’m gone. I wasn’t working with much of a budget and didn’t have a team in place so I knew it wasn’t going to get much promotion. However recently with some help from a few friends and some persistence people are starting to take notice. - Brooklyn Bodega
