Bio

Cellist, Multi-Instrumentalist, Composer and Singer/Songwriter Isaiah Gage writes music utilizing the powerful sound of the cello by placing it in rare and novel contexts. New York City born-and-raised Gage is a conservatory-trained, award winning Cellist and music professional who has spent a lifetime exploring the nuances of his primary instrument through a myriad of musical genres and approaches. He has played in venues ranging from the  Hollywood Bowl and Avery Fisher Hall to SXSW Festival and various new music festivals across the country. In his debut solo album Suddenly Home, he used the knowledge and technique of his classical training to both  depart from the traditional Cellistic styles and merge them with the experimental by adding electronic beats, beat-boxing, loops, effects, and his own voice as tools in the creation of a uniquely textured and alternative sound.

Gage started work on writing the songs for his debut LP Suddenly Home in 2012 after the break-up of his last band, La Strada (Ernest Jenning Records) , un which he was an internationally touring member, playing his Cello and vocalizing in an indie rock setting. Suddenly Home was recorded in New York City in early 2013 with frequent collaborator and esteemed producer Will Thomas (Dive Index, Plumbline, Neutral Music) as primary engineer. Thomas and Gage used a myriad of microphones, mixing methods, effects, pedals, and raw sound experimentation to set about creating a palette of colors to fill out songs already structured and composed by Gage. With this sonic plethora arranged to compliment the music, they could then create “performances” of each work through the lens of the newly modified instruments.

The alternating chord structures and soulful lyrics of the tracks in Suddenly Home tell stories of both doubt and joy, ecstasy and shame, evoking Gage’s loneliness and longing for a place to rest his mind and body. From the catchy and irreverent Washed In the Sunlight and the melodic and melancholic “Games”, to the somber romance of “Cold Shoulders”, and beyond, Suddenly Home attempts to freeze, capture and extract the purity of life while lost amongst the chaos of the big city. The cover and liner art by Marisabina Russo further reflects the themes of isolation and mindfulness that permeate the album.

Gage relocated to Los Angeles beginning in August 2014 , and has recently digitally released the single “Feathers”, which was recorded alongside Suddenly Home. September 30th 2014 brought about the release of a new Dive Index LP entitled Lost in the Pressure in which Gage is a featured Vocalist, Instrumentalist and Songwriter alongside Will Thomas and Los Angeles based Singer/Songwriter Simone White. The project has received several prominent blog spots (My Old Kentucky, LA Buzz Bands, Brooklyn Vegan, Gold Flake Paint UK) in addition to it’s release. After the album was  released, Gage and Thomas released a music video for their song “Push and Shove” created by Video Artist Benjamin Woodlock, which was received well by it’s presentation on the influential blog The Fire Note.  In the meantime, Gage continues to take on projects as a sought after session Player, Arranger, Composer and Songwriter in many musical genres for film and TV and live performance. He recently performed live onstage at the 2015 grammy awards with star artist Pharell Williams of the Neptunes and N.E.R.D, famous pianist Lang Lang and renowned film composer Hans Zimmer (for whom he has done multiple recording sessions). As a session player, Gage has played featured parts on the album and appeared Live on the Jimmy Kimmel show with the popular hip-hop artist Tyler the Creator and on the Grammy nominated Americana duo of Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. As a film session player he recently played all of the solo featured Cello Parts on the Craig Richey scored movie “No pay Nudity” starring Gabriel Byrne and Nathan Lane. Gage also appeared recently as a feature member of Chris Potter’s Underground Orchestra at the new and preeminent San Francisco Jazz Center.
