"Israel Cannan - Walk"

Israel Cannan is a young singer-songwriter hailing from the East coast of Australia. Of musical stock, both of Israel's parents are of the musical persuasion, and this year he has become somewhat of a travelling troubadour. Crossing the country, from city to city, playing in the streets from capitals to country towns. This is where I came across his music, and this EP.

The EP is a beautiful blend of roots and folk music with some rock sensibilities. One Fine Day is an upbeat opener full of rich sounding instrumentation, and brilliant vocal touches. From the outset, it is clear that Cannan has a great voice; perfectly suited to the songs he writes and performs. The track is not only instrumentally rich, but lyrically so too. Cannan is an adept song-smith and is able to convey emotion and feeling with great ease through his lyrics.

To the Left is again rich in instrumentation with electric and acousting intermingling, and a strong drum beat holding it all together. Cannan’s voice again shines through here, yet here there is a sense of fragility, an ethereal quality. The vocals change and shift during the track, appearing at times to be strong and forceful and then fragile.

I have spoken about the final track Walk before, so I apologise if I repeat myself. The dynamic is completely different here; the instrumentation is stripped back to simple acoustic, and harmonica. This stripped back approach perfectly suits Cannan’s voice, and for me this is the strongest track on the whole EP. It is quite simply a beautiful song, with some real sublime moments, lyrically and vocally.

I wholeheartedly recommend that you track down a copy of this EP, or go and see Cannan play around Australia, you won’t regret it. I will certainly be looking forward to further releases; here’s hoping for an album release soon.

Bio

"The story of walk"

In the summer of 2010 Israel Cannan left home on the Central Coast of New South Wales to travel Australia.

Promoting an album which he wrote, recorded and played almost every instrument on Israel spent the following months playing his song's
in one of the most raw environment's, The Street.

From major capital city's to country towns Israel performed for free
for whoever chose to listen, filming the experience on a hand held camera
and uploading it to the internet for the whole world to see.

Israel said of his journey,
"I was told to take a ticket and wait in line...
But there is a whole world of people out there that will connect with what I do, I just have to find them"
