"North Carolina is for rockers"

North Carolina is for rockers (2005)

By Hayley Burrus

The dazzling lights, relaxing atmosphere and popular music that make up the local band venues in Raleigh generate crowded concerts on many nights, which are filled with high school students intensely anticipating the arrival of one of their favorite local bands.
On both weekend and school nights, when band is set to play, many Broughton students often find themselves hanging out at locations such as The Pour House, The Brewery, Berkley Café and various other venues that have occasional concerts.

The kind of music that is played in these places completely varies, from high school rock bands to college bands looking to be recongnized.

Inside the Flame

A popular high school band that often plays at the Pour House is Inside the Flame. It consists of Jon Jackson, guitar and vocals; Clay Miller, bass; Oscar Landroos, guitar and vocals; and Tim Misegades on drums.

They started this “modern rock” band approximately two years ago and say that, although they are new to the Raleigh scene, they are slowly finding their place amongst the other local bands.

Playing concerts with bands that influenced their music, such as Starting Tuesday and The Mile After, has been a great accomplishment and pleasure for them according to Jon Jackson.

Other accomplishments in which they take pride include their feature on the radio station 96 Rock as well as their rough recordings.

Their influences include Starting Tuesday, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix.

Starting Tuesday

Starting Tuesday, an ever popular local inspirational band, has become famous in the high school scene not only because of their gigs at the local Raleigh hot spots, but also for their appearances at various Young Life groups, including those at Enloe and at Broughton, as well as those at other Young Life retreats.

“Starting Tuesday is about being willing to step out of the box from the unattainable standards that cripple our conscience minds, wills, and time; it’s about letting go of the metaphoric life which we have grown so accustomed and training our eyes to look past the distractions in order to see the truth,” Scott Cash, band member, said, according to their MySpace band profile.

They write most all their songs. Some of their most popular songs include “Satisfied,” “More Than What You Know” and “I Can’t Stop Loving You.”

Their favorite venues at which to play are Cat’s Cradle and The Pour House, as well as making appearances at North Carolina colleges.

“Life is too busy and too cluttered by distractions that divert us toward concerning ourselves with what we do rather than doing what we are,” Cash said.

The Mile After

The Mile After, a more famous local band from Wilmington, consists of four young passionate musicians whose music career is really starting to take off.

This rock group has become quite recognized with concerts that are performed from Los Angeles to Florida and all the way to Raleigh.

Although their fame is continuously growing, they never cease to forget their local fans back in North Carolina and make an attempt to schedule multiple gigs in the area throughout the year.

Recently signed by Rushmore Records, they greatly anticipate the release of their debut album that will come out in early 2006.

Their band consists of four guys who are wholly dedicated to the music: Ben Carter, vocals and guitar; Chase Holfelder, vocals and guitar; Jim Trice, drums; and Davis Wood, vocals and bass.

They strive to stay original by writing every single one of their songs, with their most well-known ones being the catchy “The Only One,” the acoustic “Everytown is Jamestown,” “Let It Down” and also “Worst Offender”.

"Inside the Flame Offers Hope to Rock Fans!"

Talent is hard to come by these days, but not for the Raleigh, NC based rock band, Inside The Flame. Inside The Flame has been together for 4 years and have been busy making a statement about today’s music…and that statement is, "THERE IS STILL HOPE". ITF showcased at the 2007 Florida Music Festival in Orlando, FL and since then have signed a management deal with Such and Such Management.

With their high school EP, "Maybe Some Day" (2006) they’ve managed to gain loyal fans and now have recently finished recording their second EP entitled, "A Story To Grow On," at Tree Sound Studios in Atlanta, GA with producers Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount (Cartel, Mayday Parade, etc.). A Story To Grow On is expected to be released in early 2008.

Because of their continued success, ITF has had the privilege to play with acts such as, The Fray (Epic Records), OAR (Lava Records), Jack’s Mannequin (Maverick Records), The Rocket Summer (Island/Def Jam Records), Cartel (Epic Records), The Working Title (Universal Records), Big City Rock (Atlantic Records), and many more. When you add their strong live vocal presence, that can be felt by anyone who hears it, with their incendiary live guitar work and stellar rhythm section, this band always puts on a show that won’t be forgotten.
