"iWorkmusic Thrives In The DMV Music Scene"

Check out the interview with iWorkmusic exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: Tell us where this all began. What is your history in the music scene?
iWorkmusic: I started as a graffiti artist in the Washington DC metropolitan area until a friend from school handed me a pirated copy of Fruity Loops 5.5 in 2005; I’ve been creating music ever since. In 2010 I started working on my first full project Lo-Fidelity, it was a 10 track EP that I released for my friends around the neighborhood. In 2011 I started to take my music seriously and released STSHbx online and around the city.

What are the best ways to promote yourself as an artist? Any tips you can give us?
I am not sure what “the best ways” to promote yourself as an artist are, but what works for me is doing shows and building a relationship with the individuals around your city or town that have influence. Utilize every opportunity that you can to get your name and music out there.

What do you ultimately want to become in your career?
What I am ultimately becoming is a music mogul. Currently I create music, run STSHbx Media, my multimedia company, and a clothing line called MASSIVE Clothing Co. My goal is to be featured on the Forbes list and have STSHbx Media featured as one of the best places to work.

What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
The hardest thing about being in the music business for me is doing everything independently. I have to focus on the music, but I have to focus on the business as well. I have a team of people that help me because they believe in me and they do the best they can to help me.

What is it like in your city? What is the music scene like, and how is it like living there overall?
In Washington DC the music scene is very diverse and very much alive. We have an abundance of talented artists creating amazing music in a variety of genres. Living in Washington DC as an indie artist is pretty cool because of the independent music scene here and we are close to other major music cities that have a thriving live music scenes.

What are some of advice you can give and share to other artists who are still trying to come up?
My advice is to keep going and do whatever you believe is the right move for you to make with your own career. I don’t know what anyone else’s idea of a “come up” is, but from what I have learned working in this business is that you have to learn how to adapt to change and be steadfast in who you are and never lose yourself.

What is the best thing that’s ever happened in your career?
I don’t have a “the best thing” moment for my career yet, but being interviewed by Skilly is up there as one of the best things of my career so far. I am still waiting for my “this is the best” moment of my career.

What is your inspiration?
Life is my inspiration. Life provides enough content for me to write about.

Do you feel anyone can be successful now in today’s world of music?
Yes, anyone can become successful in today’s world of music. It’s easier to gain access to recording equipment and software, so anyone can create from the comfort of their own homes. If you have the will and desire to succeed in this business, then you will. - Skilly Magazine

"iWorkmusic top dmv artist"

Born on November 24, 1984 in Washington DC, Pierre Johnson was raised in lower income housing by his single mother, and grandmother. His love for music started in church where he began playing the drums at the age of 7 years old. Throughout the years Pierre began to broaden his musical horizons by trying his hand at the piano, keyboard, and organ; but in 1998 he discovered the electric guitar, and that began a new chapter in his life. In high school around the time that Pierre was in the 10th grade, he joined the “Pep” band and began to sharpen his skill. He would also sharpen his lyrical skill, by engaging in different hip hop ciphers in class, or at lunch time.

After High school, Pierre attended The Art Institute of Washington, where he majored in Interactive Media Design, and minored in Graphic Design. In college Pierre along with other classmates formed a rap super group called “Team Proper”. The group disbanded in 2006, leaving Pierre to look for other musical outlets. From 2006 to 2009 Pierre was trying to find his place in the musical scene of Washington DC, so he joined several different “Go-go” bands, all of which had no direction for where they wanted to take the music.

Finally in 2009 Pierre would link up with an old high school band mate that was running his own production company to record his first project “The Hyliphe” (pronounced high life) but due to a misunderstanding between the two, the project never saw the light of day. In 2010 Pierre, frustrated with the stagnation of his musical career, started to learn production, and recording techniques. By September Pierre was ready to release his first project “STSHbx” (pronounced Stash box) with production from him as well as other musician friends. In 2011 Pierre started working on his own record company “Red House Recordings” with the companies first mix tape release of “The Soup” featuring all original production from Pierre, as well as cameo appearances from upcoming Red House Recording artist.

In the next 5 years Pierre plans to take his music career to higher heights. Pierre is currently working with Universal recording artist Marky with his “Winning Streak” movement. He has interned at Studio 43, an independent boutique recording label out of Washington DC owned and ran by Kenny Burns. Pierre is exploring song writing for other artist, as well as working on more solo projects, and projects for the artist under his independent label. - DMV Life.com

"iWorkmusic Electric Groove"

Cohesive rhythm with a sense of motion that educates a performance is to feel the perspective of one’s verbal exhale. Complete fulfillment from a description that is more outspoken than the artist is to groove within the expression. When listening to an artist vocal externalization it is often best to remember it is not what is being stated but how one confronts the vocal presentation. iWorkMusic understands that flow is elemental when attracting an audience in order for listeners to retain not only his “Electric Groove” but his perspective. Removing his hands from a microphone, iWorkMuic takes viewers on a visual journey that personifies the lyrics of his latest video release “Electric Groove” from his album “Born On This Day.” Moving music & allowing the essence of soulful traditions to balance his routine, he provides clarity with context that is aligned an intuitive sense. - DMV Culture.com

"iWorkmusic Born On This Day"

Comprehension skills flourish from the smoke that was once an ignited flame that passed in the wind. To “Turn It All Around” & feel an “Electric Groove,” after the smog has cleared from the “Smoke” is to “grind until you shine” like iWorkMusic. Filled with ambition that cannot be refuted or denied, the young emcee, producer & writer gives birth naturally to his latest release “Born On This Day.” Progressing with triumph, iWorkMusic offers more than a synopsis. He provides clarity on his intentions, which is to eventually, go on a “World Tour.” The amiable sound that resonates from the lyrical expressionist reinforces his refined production & supports his ability to not only “stand strong” but sit behind the pen & reimburse his journey as an artist. iWorkMusic solidifies the abundance of his worth & talent by mixing, recording, writing & producing “Born on this Day” himself. - DMV Culture.com
