Bio

Iyaba Ibo Mandingo was born and lived the early part of his childhood in Antigua, W.I. He moved to America with his family when he was 11 years old. When asked the reason for that move, Iyaba’s response was “like most of the people in the rest of the world, my family thought America was what it professed itself to be, a place of hope and promise...man were we ever wrong”

Iyaba studied World History and Painting in college, and, according to him “several classes where I learned to write like a white poet”. Art and Poetry have always been a part of his life. He remembers stealing his moms foil paper to create figures and animals, and seeing patterns and colors in his grandfathers tailor shop.

His influences include artists such as Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden. Iyaba’s love of reading is responsible for his venture into writing. His poetry has many of the characteristics of his paintings; the narration, the subject matter and the emotions which flow from a wellspring of Black experience, i.e. Slavery, Black on Black crime, police brutality, Rastafari, Black Love, and more.

This powerful poet released his first book in 2000 called “41 Times” dedicated to Amadou Diallo. He followed this in 2001 by his first CD entitled “Self-Portrait”. His one man show of the same name will be on tour beginning in the Spring of 2005.

...this brother definitely has a few things to say...!!
