Izaline Calister
NEW ALBUM ‘Speransa’ OUT May 1st 2009
Izaline Calister is a highly talented singer and songwriter with an unique musical style. A charismatic performer, she can be at times warm and intimate, then again expressive and extroverted, masterfully weaving together the traditional music of her native island, Curacao (Dutch Caribbean), with folklore and Afro-Caribbean influences. As she sings in her mother tongue, Papiamento, with feeling and grace, she has this ability to remain true to her roots and successfully reach out and conquer audiences around the world. Truthfully she’s been described as the Queen of Antillean music (PZC). Het stage performance is unforgettable: "Bare-foot and with closed eyes, as if living in her own dream world, you can touch the beauty of Antillean music”. (OOR)
Following her conservatory studies in voice and composition all the while gaining professional experience in various groups, Izaline releases her first solo album on her own label in 2000. The title song, “Sono di un muhé” (One Woman’s Dream), describes a dream come true. Though not yet very well known as a soloist, her CD launch concert in the well-known Amsterdam jazz temple, the BIM-Huis, sells out and she sets the place on fire! The Dutch newspaper “NRC Handelsblad” notes: "Izaline Calister writes history at the BIM-Huis". Another daily paper, “De Volkskrant”, shares the enthusiasm for the album: "One of the most beautiful vocal records to have been released lately”.
After a second album, Mariposa, released on her own label, she signs with Network Medien, where she releases two albums Krioyo and Kanta Helele in 38 countries.
Speransa (Hope in Papiamento) is the title of Izaline Calister’s fifth solo-album, which she, like all her other albums, produced herself. For input and inspiration she contacted producer Jacques Ehrhart (Henri Salvador, Camille, Mayra Andrade) whose work she admires.
Jacques impressed with her skills for songwriting and ‘creating a beautiful atmosphere’ gave her the confidence and inspiration to proceed in her writing process. The result is this beautiful, intimate and personal album and the solid confirmation of Izaline’s writing and composing talents.
Speransa is a delightful summer album with a hint of melancholy and lots of Caribbean sun and sea.
