"Secret Fangirls Interview"

18-year-old singer songwriter Izzy Malik just released her self-titled debut EP in March. We love her pop country sound, and the range of influences that go into her songs. We talked to Izzy about her EP, funny fangirl moments, and how she’s learned from other artists when it comes to fans (She totally gets it!). Listen to her track “Just Another Boy” below!

SecretFangirls.com: You just released your self titled EP. What song did you have the most fun writing?
Izzy Malik: I definitely had the most fun writing “Just Another Boy.” It’s based on a dream I had about Harry Styles and I going on a date at the Santa Monica Pier where the song was playing in the background. The minute I woke up, I rushed to get the song written down before I forgot. But “Malala” also holds a very special place in my heart, as her cause is very dear to me.

SF: How would you describe your sound?
IM: I would say pop with country and rock undertones!

SF: Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
IM: Some of my biggest influences are Britney Spears, One Direction, The Ramones, Joan Jett, John Mayer, Shania Twain, and Carrie Underwood.

SF: If you could create a dream tour lineup, who would you want to tour with?
IM: It would be killer to tour with Guns N Roses, KISS, One Direction, John Mayer, The 1975, Ed Sheeran, or 5 Seconds of Summer. They’re all crazy talented and I’d be so honored to tour with any of them.

SF: What is the most memorable concert that you’ve been to?
IM: Definitely a Simple Plan show I went to when I was sixteen. It was amazing because I’d looked up to them so much for seven years and I was finally seeing them live. It was an unforgettable experience.

SF: Of any other musicians, dead or alive, who would you “fangirl” out over the most if you had the opportunity to meet them, and why?

IM: Elvis Presley or John Lennon! And of course Harry Styles. When they sing, it’s like magic. I look up to all three of them so much, they’re all legends.

SF: We love that you are fan yourself, and enjoy going to concerts and meeting other artists. (Note: Check out IzzyMalik.com!) What have you learned from these experiences as an artist?
IM: I’ve learned how treating your fans can directly affect your popularity! Even if you’re the most talented of people, if you don’t give your fans the love they deserve, you’re not going to go very far. Fans work so hard to get tickets, count the days to the show, and sometimes you’re the silver lining in their cloudy life. It means so much to them, a kind word, gesture, hug, or smile… It can change their life in the most profound of ways coming from someone they admire so greatly. As musicians, we must never forget that responsibility and make each and every one of them feel special and loved.

SF: Do you have any funny fangirl stories you could share?
IM: Well, this wasn’t at a concert, but I was on Skype with my good friend, Chris Bourne of Hollywood Ending, and we were writing together, he’s a great writer and we often work together. All of a sudden he was like, “Oh, hey, James, come in here and say hi to my friend” and I freaked out because I’d been a fan of Busted since I was ten years old. I basically cried after I talked to James and Chris was just sitting there laughing. It was pretty great! They’re both awesome people and I’m so lucky to have a pal like Chris.

SF: Who are some of your favorite performers?
IM: One Direction for sure, Hunter Hayes, Britney Spears, All Time Low, 5 Seconds Of Summer, Simple Plan, Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood, and way more! I could probably fill a book with all of them. I still really want to see John Mayer and Shania Twain live!

SF: Now that the EP is out, what is next for you?
IM: I’m going to be releasing my new music video for “Just Another Boy” very soon and then will be hitting the road, details to come. Then back to the studio and I’ll have some more material out soon! :)

"CRAZY TOUR STORIES with Digital Tour Bus"

In this Crazy Tour Stories segment, the pop rock artist, Izzy Malik talks about one of her crazy moments from touring. You can check out the feature, after the break.

Let’s start off by saying that this is basically “Izzy and the No Good, Very Bad, Turned Pretty Freaking Awesome” day. I woke up in the morning feeling a bit tired and my best friend (and tour manager) Josh told me to just suck it up – it was the 2 nd of 5 shows in a row and I didn’t have time for feeling crappy, right? So, I have 4 cups of coffee (way more than my usual 1.5) and go back to my hotel room to get ready. Then, I found out our call time is 8AM… And it’s already 7:30… And the venue is half an hour away. So, I rush to get ready and we – thankfully – make it to the venue in time.

Everything went okay from then until the actual show. It started raining right before my set and I was about ready to freak out. Our stage can be super slippery and people HAVE fallen off before. So I don’t fall off during my performance, BUT as I’m running (like an idiot) down the ramp, I slip and fall on my butt, BOUNCE up in the air twice, and fall again twice. Yikes.

Then after the show, we’re making the four-hour drive to the next town. I’ve changed into my sweatpants and old ratty hoodie and look like a total bum. Also, we’ve finished an extra large pizza between the two of us so I’m in a food coma. We get to the hotel and are checking in when I hear my dad say “Oh, hey, Drake!” I turn around to see none other than the headliner, Drake Bell aka my childhood crush and one of my musical idols.

I freak out! I mean this dude is the definition of cool and I look like I rolled out of bed. I pull my hoodie over my face and pull the drawstrings so tight that I look like Kenny McCormick from “South Park” (and sound like him too, since my voice is so muffled). However, the conversation soon turned to all things Disney, and being a Disneyphile like Drake, we had an awesome chat!

So, my day started off pretty bad, but at the end of the day I’d become friends with my hero! All in a day of touring, I guess. :) - Digital Tour Bus

"Planet Stereo Interview"

Some of the most wonderful artists seem to just come out of nowhere, like shooting stars, darting across a pitch black sky. At Planet Stereo, these are the artists that prove to be the most interesting. Izzy Malik, a nineteen year old pop artist who truly shines. After releasing her self-titled debut EP in March, Izzy has catapulted into the earbuds of many listeners. As a teen activist for women’s rights, Izzy ignited a spark with her single and video, “Malala,” a tribute to Malala Yousufzai, the young woman shot by the Taliban for wanting and education.
Not only is she a wonderful artist, but she is endearingly sweet, as many will come to see when reading her interview with Planet Stereo below:
Planet Stereo: Thanks so much for doing the interview. How are you?
Izzy Malik: Thank you for the opportunity! It’s a pleasure, and I’m doing great, thanks! I hope everyone at Planet Stereo is having a wonderful week as well.

PS: You recently released your debut self-titled EP. How have listeners been reacting so far?
IM: We’ve been getting a pretty positive response and I’m super stoked about getting it out there to more listeners!

PS: What were you most nervous about with the release?
IM: I was pretty nervous about how the fans would like it. Up till then, I’d only released a couple of singles, which had a positive response, but I was still pretty nervous about reaction to the EP as a whole.

PS: Shortly after, you played your first gig. How would you describe the feeling you got playing live?
IM: It was absolutely amazing. I had such an adrenaline rush and just didn’t want to leave the stage. After all, I’d been preparing for this ever since my childhood and been dreaming of it since before that even!

PS: You have a song about Malala Yousufzai and had a video to go along with it. Why did you choose to focus on her, from a storytelling standpoint?
IM: I thought awareness needs to be brought to Malala’s struggle as well as other girls in the Pakistan going through these issues everyday. We have education so readily available to us in the US, we sometimes take it for granted, so it’s important to remember that there are people out there, like Malala, struggling to have this basic right.

PS: Did you enjoy filming the video?
IM: Definitely. It was a great experience. It was a lot of hard work, but we were definitely proud of it in the end.

PS: Has Malala reached out to you since the song debuted?
IM: Unfortunately, I haven’t had any personal contact with her. I would love to meet her and I’m sure we’d have a lot to talk about.

PS: Even though you’re just nineteen, I think you display some very mature qualities. How do you think that has played into your songwriting?
IM: What I try to do is mix fun, upbeat tunes to meaningful lyrics whenever possible. Also, I like to have some songs that convey a message, for instance, “Malala” is about women’s rights and being an advocate for education. “Smart Is Beautiful” is about celebrating yourself and not being shy of who you are.

PS: How would you describe your sound?
IM: I’d say it’s bubblegum pop with country and rock undertones!

PS: I know you moved from Pakistan to America. Has that influenced your musical style/songwriting in any way?
IM: I was very young when we came to America, and, sadly, with the deteriorating conditions in Pakistan, it has been harder and harder for me to go back and visit. However, I have a Pakistani/American fusion song in the pipeline! Stay posted for more, we’re super excited.

PS: What do you think makes you stand out as an artist?
IM: Ever since I can remember, being an artist is all I’ve ever wanted. Everything I’ve done has revolved around music in some way. Honestly, music means to me so much more than I can ever quantify in words. It’s my life and sometimes I feel it’s the sole purpose of my existence. I have been a fan of many musicians and loved all genres of music with an undying passion. To me, music should not be limited to a certain genre. It is to be enjoyed in every form. I feel it’s that passion for music as a whole that makes me stand out.

PS: With all the confidence you have, what advice would you offer young artists looking to make a name for themselves?
IM: Don’t give up, no matter what. Even though things may not look so good sometimes, keep on working hard and dreaming big, and you’ll make it. If you want it enough and work hard enough, it’ll happen. Nothing is impossible. Nobody’s born a Grammy-winner, it’s your work, dedication, and faith in your passion that’ll lead you to success.

PS: What do you hope listeners walk away with after listening to your EP?
IM: I hope they walk away happy and confident in themselves, and also feel like putting their dancing shoes on!

PS: Any last words?
IM: Thank you so much and to everyone who’s reading this, keep your life full of peace, love, and music. Rock on, everyone.

"Soundsphere Magazine Interview"

In our latest Reverbnation Spotlight, we chat to Izzy Malik.

S] What inspires your material – think films/people/places?

I get inspired by almost anything. One of my songs, my first single “Malala”, was inspired by the brave women’s right’s activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, while my second single was inspired by Harry Styles of One Direction. Situations also inspire me, like being in a situation where I loved someone who didn’t treat me the way I deserved or just a funny thing that happened. My most recent single “Neverland” was actually inspired by Peter Pan, so that would be a film-inspired song. Inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere – you just have to be ready to act on it.

S] What song best defines where you are at now as a artist?

I think my new single “Neverland” really defines my new sound. I grew up listening to classic rock and roll, so it was kind of weird for me to be singing bubblegum pop or R&B. I’ve finally found a pop rock sound that I love, inspired by Elvis, Joan Jett, Avril Lavigne, All Time Low, and other such artists, so I feel really happy with the direction my music’s taking. I hope to move even more into rock than pop in the future.

S] What are your major plans for the rest of this year?

I’m going on tour with Richie Ramone, former drummer of punk rock legends, The Ramones, and releasing my debut album in the late summer/early fall. We’ll see what else happens!

S] Any messages for UK fans?

I love the UK and can’t wait to perform there! Rock on, dream big, and keep on being yourself because you’re freaking awesome! - Soundsphere Magazine

"Sacramento 365 Feature & Interview"

Izzy Malik: Pop with Heart

The 2014 High School Nation (HSN) Tour heads to Sacramento this Friday, September 19. Over the past decade, the music tour has given up-and-coming artists the chance to perform at local middle schools and high schools, as well as providing students free entertainment at a time when school art and music program funding is at an all-time low.

We got the chance to chat with HSN artist and Northern California pop songstress Izzy Malik about her new self-titled EP, her admiration for activist Malala Yousafzai, and why we should all dream big.

1. How would you describe your new self-titled EP to our readers?
I’d say my EP is very dance-in-your-room pop with a lot of rock, country, reggae, and hip-hop influence. I took inspiration from artists of many genres and didn’t want to limit the sound, so you can get a little bit of everything in there, as I enjoy all sorts of music and wanted that to be conveyed to my listeners.

2. Your song, “Malala,” is about Pakistani women’s rights and education activist, Malala Yousufzai – definitely not your typical pop song fodder. Why did you choose to focus on her for your first single?
When I heard Malala’s story on the news, I’d just come home from school as a senior in high school. I found it so totally nuts that someone would have to go through so much to get an education and wanted to bring awareness to the plight of girls who fight for their basic right to an education. The fact that she’s from Pakistan also had a huge impact on me. I still have most of my family there and a house in my childhood neighborhood was bombed. It’s crazy how hard life is there and I thought the more awareness I could bring to this grave injustice, the higher the chance that things could change. Also, I think it’s kind of nice for school-going kids to realize how lucky we are and how one should never take their education for granted. This is the plight of countless Muslim girls in developing countries, and Malala is a shining example and a very strong voice for this cause and I wanted to honor her and show her my support, which she will always have.

3. You often tell your fans to “DREAM BIG.” Is this motto of yours inspired by her life story?
Definitely. When I say “DREAM BIG”, Malala is one of the people I have in mind. When I say that, I’m encouraging the fans to reach for the stars and never let adversity hinder their ambition and drive to achieve their goals and not to let a single individual or organization tell you you’re not good enough or it’s impossible. Anything is possible; it just depends on how hard you are willing to work and how much you believe in your dreams. That’s the deciding factor; it’s in nobody’s hands but your own. You decide your fate and you make your own destiny. Just be persistent and work hard all day, everyday.

4. You grew up in Merced, which isn’t too far from Sacramento. Have you ever visited the Capital City? Any interesting stories from your time here?
I actually went to a Big Time Rush concert here in Sacramento when I was sixteen! It was so cool because I got to meet them and gave them a CD of my music. It was when I was first starting to get into actually recording and they were so sweet and supportive. I had an amazing time and got to see some of the city before and after the concert, which was super cool! I always found their music fun and uplifting, and they also led me to one of my other favorite bands, One Direction! The second single off my EP, “Just Another Boy” is actually dedicated to/inspired by Harry Styles. Basically, that trip to Sac was pretty life-changing.

5. How are you juggling the college grind and pop stardom? (Are you living a double life like Hanna Montana?)
It’s pretty hard managing my time between school and my music, but I think I’m making it work! I’ll be doing online courses from Berkeley and UCLA this semester since I’m touring. My family and friends are super supportive of my career, so I’m really lucky with that!

6. You’ll soon be performing at middle and high schools across the country for the 2014 High School Nation Tour. What advice do you have for tweens and teens interested in entering the music business?
My advice is to keep working at it no matter what. You’re going to get a hundred “no”s before you get one “yes”, and that’s okay, because when people find out how awesome you are, it’ll totally be worth it. You just have to keep working on making yourself better and have a positive attitude. That way, you’ll be able to accomplish anything.

Izzy will share the stage with Drake Bell, Dakota Bradley, Jacob Latimore and others this Friday, September 19 at one lucky Sacramento school (sorry, we can’t reveal the location — it’s a surprise!) For more information about the High School Nation Tour, click here.

"Shameless Promo Interview"

Check out this great interview I got to do with singer/songwriter Izzy Malik! Izzy and I spoke about her songwriting process, her music video "Malala", and what music means to her.

Tell me a little about when you first got started playing music. This could be the first experience you had when you sang, or picked up an instrument, whatever it may be!

I’ve been singing since I was really young. I started taking voice lessons when I was in first grade. It was when I was six years old that I realized that I wanted to be a musician. I saw a Britney Spears performance on my TV, and I realized that that’s what I wanted to do.

I understand that you are a major advocate for women’s rights and education. How would you say that side of you plays into your musical endeavors?

Well my first single was about women’s education and rights. It was for Malala Yousafzai, the girl who was shot by the Taliban for wanting an education, and survived. It juxtaposes the life of a normal American girl getting an education easily, and the girls in the Indian subcontinent who have to fight to get an education, which is really their basic right. It’s just really important for me because a lot of us here in the states take education for granted. You have girls in that area of the world fighting for their life just so they can go to school. That just really hit me because I’m originally from there. My family is mostly from Pakistan. My aunt is a teacher there, my grandmother is a teacher there. You hear about these kinds of stories all the time, and I felt like it was necessary to bring awareness to that issue.

I actually remember hearing about Malala. She was on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and she did this really great interview with him about the situation and what happened. When did you first hear about her story?

I was a senior in high school, and I came home and heard about it on the news. I just thought it was crazy that people would go to that extreme to stop someone from getting an education. I just thought that someone needed to write a tribute to her. I thought she was just so brave for standing up for her rights.

Tell me a little bit about the writing process for this EP. When did the first song come into play, and about how long did it take for the entire process to be complete?

I think it took about six months, I want to say. When I write lyrics, I try to write them as fast as I can so I don’t forget the idea I have. The first single on the EP, “Just Another Boy”, was actually from a dream that I had. I woke up and I had that song playing in my head. I wanted to get it written down as fast as possible. We had it recorded within about a month. I think we had all the songs in about six months.

I understand that you’re attending college right now while working on your music career. What’s been the biggest challenge and biggest reward with tackling both of these endeavors at the same time?

I think the biggest challenge is balancing my time properly. I love nothing more than to give all my time to my music. There’s times when I’m in class, and there’s an idea that hits me, where there’s something that I want to write about. And I have to try to do it as discreetly as possible. I think it’s worth it because I take these classes that are really interesting and some of them are music classes too. It’s all going to help me with my career.

The next two questions I ask to every artist that I interview. First, what kind of message would you like fans to walk away with after listening to your music?

I’d like fans to walk away with the message that it’s okay to be yourself. If somebody cares about you, they’ll love you for who you are. The other thing is that anything is possible if you dream big and work hard to make your dreams a reality.

Second: what does music mean to you?

Honestly, music means everything to me. Music is always there when sometimes people aren’t there. Music can just bring you up when you’re feeling down. Music is honestly just the love of my life. I can’t imagine my life without it.

Last question: what are the future plans for Izzy Malik? If there’s anything you’d like to let fans know about, go for it!

Yeah! We’re going to be releasing my second music video, for “Just Another Boy”, sometime this month. My second EP is going to be released later in the year around Christmas, hopefully. I’m going to be hitting the road later this year and I’ll have more details to come about that soon.

"City Lights Coverage Interview"

We got to talk to Izzy Malik about her self titled EP! Read to find out what song she dedicated to Harry Styles, and what her favorite part of making the EP was.

FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T LISTENED TO YOU YET, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC?

I’d describe it as pop with a dash of country. Also, a couple of tracks have a bit of a reggae or rock feel.

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES YOU STAND OUT FROM EVERY OTHER MUSICIAN IN YOUR GENRE?

Ever since I was a little kid, going back all the way to (my parents say) before I was talking, I tapped along and hummed to music. It’s been in my heart and soul forever. As I started growing up, all I wanted to do was perform or sit and write songs. I would pretend to be in concert performing. From first grade onwards, I started getting voice lessons. The duration and intensity of my passion for music has been undying and constant. As I grew up further, I started taking great interest in going to live shows and seeing my favorite artists perform. I loved the interaction between them and the audience; it inspired me further. All I could think about was being on the other side. Attending shows and being a big supporter of many of my favorite bands and musicians, I saw life from another perspective, music-wise, that of the audience/fan, which made me value the fact that I am now a performer myself all the more.

YOU PUT OUT YOUR SELF TITLE EP BACK IN MARCH. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT MAKING THE RECORD?

My favorite thing was definitely the recording process itself. I love singing and it was so amazing to bring to life songs that were thus far only in my head.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR FAVORITE SONG OFF THE ALBUM ABOUT WHY?

Probably “Just Another Boy”. This would be because I literally dreamt the song and rushed to write it as soon as I woke up. The dream was about me and Harry Styles, so I dedicated that song to him. He is one of my biggest musical influences, as he is true to his art and down to earth.

YOU PUT OUT A COUPLE OF YOUTUBE COVERS LATELY. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS GOING TO BE YOUR NEXT COVER VIDEO?

My next cover video is a very popular country song by the amazingly talented Hunter Hayes. The cover video was super fun to shoot and I am so excited to share it with everyone.

ARE YOU PLANNING ANY TOURS IN THE FUTURE?

Definitely! I’m dying to perform again and can’t wait to hit the road!

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD? THANKS!

Just want to say dream big because anything is possible if you work hard. Keep your life full of peace, love, and music. Much love!! Xoxo - Grace Hartrick

"Culture Burst Interview"

Izzy Malik has released her new self entitled EP and it’s been a labor of love. For those wondering how long it can take she was ready to answer that question right out of the box.

“It took about six months,” she said. “We started in early 2013 and we finished recording it in March but it just took a while to get around to releasing it. It just didn’t feel like it was the right time.

As a proud singer/songwriter the wait had to be killing her.

“Three of the songs were written just by me. "Just Another Boy", "Need to Know" and my tribute to Malala,” she said with pride. “Malala is the girl who was shot by the Taliban in late 2012 for wanting an education. She is Pakistani. She was a social rights blogger and the Taliban chose her as a target. She survived.”

Malik has been inspired by some older, classic music and that may be what gives her an interesting style.

“I listen to a lot of classic rock, The Beatles, The Doors, Guns and Roses,” she said, crediting her parents for this. “I want people to walk away feeling better about themselves. I want to get that across in my music.”

“Just Another Boy” is a big hit and she explained what the song was about.

“Just another boy was a song that was in my head. I heard it in a dream. When I woke up I ran to write down the lyrics. The dream was about Harry Styles from One Direction. This was the first one I felt was good enough to go and record.”

Britney Spears has been an inspiration to many young women around the world and Malik was no exception.

“I started seeing her when I was in 7th grade and I would sing for fun and then I realized I wanted to do what she was doing,”Malik said. “ I just saw the way the audience lit up when she came out on the stage. That’s when I thought this is what I have to do.”

“Live The Dream” is a song that’s there to provide a pat on the back to people who are trying to get to that next level.

“I think it pertains to anybody trying to accomplish a goal and if you set your mind to it you can accomplish anything,” said Malik. “When I was in high school a lot of the kids would tell me that it was hard to succeed in music but I thought if I set my mind to it I could accomplish it. If it wasn’t for my parents I wouldn’t be able to do what I do today.”

"VENTS Magazine Interview"

Hi Izzy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been great, thank you! Enjoying my summer vacation and been writing as much as possible! Hope everyone at VENTS is having a great summer too!

How did you fall in love with music?
For as long as I can remember, music has been an extremely important part of my life. Then, one day while watching a Britney Spears performance on my TV (I was about 5), I realized that music is what I had to pursue when I grew up.

Can you talk to us more about your latest track and video, Malala and how was the filming experience? I heard it is about the girl who was shot in Pakistan, can you tell us more about it?
Yes, definitely. Malala Yousufzai was fifteen years old when she had an attempt made on her life by the Taliban. She was targeted simply because she wanted an education and was a strong voice against the Taliban’s rule. I remember hearing about the shooting when I came home from school and thinking that someone needed to give her the tribute she deserved and reach out to her to tell her we are all behind her and support her. I wrote the lyrics, recorded the song, and shot the video to honor her. The video juxtaposes the life of a typical American schoolgirl with Malala’s life. It shows the sharp contrast between the ease of acquiring an education here in the US as opposed to what girls in that area of the world have to go through to get their basic right to an education.

Let´s talk about your latest material, self-titled; can you talk to us more about the recording process behind the album?
Absolutely. I got to work with a lot of awesome people, both on the writing and production aspect, which further enhanced my EP. I worked with multi-platinum producer/song-writer Drew Lane, who wrote three of the songs on my EP, as well as McKinley Horton, Jon Elefante, and many other awesome people.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs? Would you say this is a more personal record?
This record is definitely pretty personal. I wrote/co-wrote three of the songs on the EP, “Just Another Boy”, “Need To Know”, and “Malala”. “Just Another Boy” is based on a dream I had about Harry Styles from One Direction. I was in high school and heard this song playing in my head in the dream. I woke up and ran to write it down before I forgot. The music video features a Harry Styles look-alike, the very talented and gorgeous Colton Hobizal, so keep an eye out for that!

Will you be hitting the road this year?
Yes, I’m itching to perform again!

What´s it been like to share the stage with acts like IM5, False Puppet and what have you learned from those experiences?
IM5 and False Puppet are such great performers; it was an awesome experience sharing the stage with them! They brought so much energy and we had an awesome time. They’re the sweetest guys. Dalton Rapattoni, formerly of IM5, actually wore one of my “Izzy Malik” shirts for a cover video he did with his new band, Fly Away Hero, so that was really awesome! I hope to perform with them all again soon.

What´s happening next in Izzy Malik´s world?
Hopefully reaching more people with my music, releasing a new EP later in the year, more music videos, and (fingers crossed) dating a member of One Direction. Just kidding about that last part! If only!

Where can we find more about your music?
You can check out my website, theizzymalik.tumblr.com, or my other social networking sites (Twitter/Instagram: theizzymalik, Facebook: facebook.com/theizzymalik). My EP is available on iTunes! - RJ Frometa

"Cool Try, Bro! Interview"

Who are you and what are you doing here??

My name is Izzy Malik, and I’m a 19-year-old pop singer. I’m here to share my music with the world and hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.

How did your music career start?

My music career started when I was five years old. That was when I first decided to become a singer. Ever since then, all I’ve done is work towards achieving that goal.

How would you describe your music?

My musical style could best be described as bubblegum pop with a splash of modern country.

If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your sound which one would it be?

I think “Just Another Boy”, my first single off my debut EP, best describes my sound. The chorus has a feel-good sound and I love the way the guitar track was laid. I think it’s just a dance-around-your-room kind of song, which is what I’m trying to put out there.

In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?

I think the fact that I’m bi-cultural and have a pretty unique perspective on life sets me apart, which I believe shows in certain songs I’ve written, like “Malala”, dedicated to the brave young woman who was shot by the Taliban and survived.

Where are people able to hear your songs?

You can buy my debut EP, Izzy Malik, on iTunes or check out my YouTube channel for all upcoming music videos featuring those songs.

Are you playing any shows anytime soon?

Yes, I will definitely be hitting the road later this year.

What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a musician?

Definitely my first performance this past February. It was a benefit concert for cancer patients and I was so happy that part of the proceeds from my very first show were going towards helping those who couldn’t get cancer treatment on their own.

Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?

Hollywood Ending, Before You Exit, and Paradise Fears. All great bands and great guys.

Anything else you’d like to add?

To anyone reading this, remember to keep your life full of peace, love, and music, and to DREAM BIG. Much love xoxo. - Sean Holio

Merced, CA - June 26, 2014 - 19 year-old pop artist Izzy Malik has released her self-titled EP, which is now available on iTunes! The EP, which combines dance-in-your-room bubblegum pop with a sweet spoonful of modern country, can be purchased on iTunes here: http://bit.ly/1nxepO6. For more information, you can visit: http://theizzymalik.tumblr.com/
It’s a rare feat for a pop artist to come along with substance and talent, but an artist as inspiring and uplifting as Izzy Malik doesn’t come around very often. Izzy moved to America from Taliban-dominated Pakistan at the age of three, and was determined from a young age to channel her profound story, and bring positive messaging, euphoric pop hooks, and a dazzling performance style to touch the world. Now, 18, she has released her invigorating debut EP, Izzy Malik, and boldly announces her arrival on the international pop scene.

Having experienced unjust conditions in Pakistan as a child, Izzy was driven to make a statement about today’s Pakistani conflicts by penning her first single, “Malala.” The song, and accompanying video, is a poignant tribute to Malala Yousufzai, the young woman who was shot by the Taliban for wanting an education and survived. "That story really spoke to me. Malala was two years younger than me," Izzy says. Not only does the song honor Malala’s boldness, it also inspires listeners to make the most of the opportunities available to them. Watch Izzy’s video for “Malala” here: http://bit.ly/1nxepO6

Though Izzy is something of a teen activist for women’s rights, she wants her music to reach everyone-boys and girls-wherever they are in life. On her EP, she also performs songs about relationships and romance (“Last First Kiss,” “Just Another Boy,” and “Need To Know”), as well as positive self-imaging (“Smart Is Beautiful,” “Live The Dream”). "I want to help kids by showing them anything is possible if they dream big, work hard, and stay true to themselves," Izzy states.

Izzy has been favorably compared to such artists as Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Beyonce, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, and Shania Twain. Though she’s a young artist and inspired by these pop icons, Izzy Malik has her own distinct musicality and unique vibe that is sure to pave the way for this young artist.

Looking back on her awe-inspiring story she says: "I realized early on, if you put your mind to it and work hard, you can do whatever you want to, even if it seems impossible. I want to share that message with the world!"

"Joonbug Feature & Interview"

Izzy Malik isn’t your typical teen. Most teens her age are caught up dating dramas, feuding with
parents or even wrestling with decisions like whether to go
short or long for prom. Not Izzy. Izzy, in many ways, views
the world from an adult’s perspective. She is specifically
concerned about Malala Yousufazi, the young girl who was
shot by the Taliban because she was speaking out in favor of
girl’s rights to get an education. Yousufazi survived, and
continues on with her campaign today. Malik’s empathy may
stem from her Pakistani roots; She moved here from Pakistan
at the tender age of three, and has always felt passionately
about women's rights. She released an album this past March
that included a track dedicated to Yousufazi and her struggle.

We were fortunate to have the opportunity to speak with Malik about her biggest inspirations,
what sets her apart, and more...

For our readers who might not know, could you tell us a bit about yourself?
Of course. My name is Izzy Malik, I’m 19 years old and I’m a pop singer-songwriter and
psychology major. Music is my life and has been ever since I was a little kid. Although I sing
primarily pop, I listen to all genres and take inspiration from them. I’m also majorly into scary
movies and fashion.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
Sooo many artists. I’d say mainly Elvis, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, One Direction (Harry
Styles and Zayn Malik in particular), Taylor Swift, Hunter Hayes, Beyonce, Britney Spears, The
Ramones, and Joan Jett.
You released your debut self-titled album this past March. What was your favorite
part about recording?
I’d say all the awesome people I got to work with. It was such an amazing experience to work
with so many talented, like-minded people, especially my producer/big bro/co-songwriter Drew
Lane and amazing voice coach Dave Stroud. They both helped me grow so much as a musician.
Your first single and music video, "Malala," is a tribute to Malala Yousafzai, who
was shot by the Taliban for wanting to get an education. Was that story what got
you involved in women's rights, or have you always been interested?
I’ve always believed in women’s rights, but I felt Malala and her story were my call to action. We
moved from Pakistan when I was very young and things were starting to get bad, so I never had
to experience what Malala did, but I heard stories similar to hers from my family members and
friends who still live there. Malala and her cause are very close to my heart and her story speaks
to me on a very personal level.
In addition to your career, you're also going to college full-time. What's been the
biggest challenge you've faced in balancing the two?
In the beginning, time management was definitely my biggest problem. Between my music
commitments, full-time class schedule, and part-time work at Merced Cancer Center, my plate
was full. I tried my best to keep that balance, however, with my increasing commitments to my music, I have had to switch to online school, taking classes from UCLA and UC Berkeley.
Education is extremely important to me and I am planning to maintain my GPA as well as get
credits equivalent to a full-time student. In the future, I hope to attend Stanford Law School.
You recently performed your first gig, a charity concert for cancer patients, with
IM5 and False Puppet. How was it? Any more performances or tours planned in
the near future?
The show was amazing! It was in my hometown so performing in front of my friends,
classmates, and family was an awesome experience. The guys were super nice and we had a fun
time. I will actually be going on tour this month with the super-talented and amazing Drake Bell
(from Nickelodeon’s “Drake & Josh”), Jacob Latimore, and some other great artists. I’m super
stoked, this is my first tour and I’ll be performing at ten different locations on the west coast,
and it’ll be such an honor sharing the stage with one of my childhood heroes, Drake!
What makes you different from all other musicians in your genre?
I’d say the fact that I don’t limit myself to one genre. I like incorporating a lot of different
influences into my music, whether it’s country, pop, reggae, hip-hop, or rock. In my opinion,
music knows no boundaries and is to be enjoyed in every form. My next EP includes rap, ballads,
pop, and country.
Is there anything that you would like to say to your fans?
Definitely! I love you guys, thank you so much for the support. You are literally the best!! And
thank you so much to everyone at Joonbug, you guys are fab! - Joonbug

"Izzy Malik - 'Fire' - EP Review"

Strong stuff from Izzy Malik here…for someone who’s kind of questioning her abilities somewhat in the lyrics of the opening track “Beautiful Mistake,” she sure comes out confidently on this new EP, Fire. Have you ever run into that ultra-confident person that just KNOWS they’re awesome? Right – we all have. Izzy Malik isn’t that person…that confidence is consistently building around her as she ventures further into her career & music and you can tell she has humble personality through her lyrics.

There are solid songs here on the Fire EP. For the most part, Izzy sticks to her own and really puts out her own unique talents & qualities through these songs. Certain leanings in sound reveal some influences that have no doubt helped shaped her sound as she was starting to write and refine her own music. Comparisons to artists like Rihanna and Lana Del Rey are going to naturally occur one the opening two tracks…and so it begins…

“Beautiful Mistake”

“Beautiful Mistake” has that low-end Rihanna-ness to it all…it’s a minimalist beat that really requires Izzy Malik to step-up immediately and basically carry an entire song with the melody she’s creating through her voice alone. The music is truly sparse…there’s not much going on at ALL…and this incredible performance is nailing it for me right away. It’s auto-tuned to all-hell but those that follow me know I’m a sucker for that done right…and it IS done right here. Izzy has completely created the melody necessary to drive this song to new heights through her beautifully altered voice and she uses it as expertly as a guitar player can play a guitar. She’s put her voice in as an instrument…and it works excellently.

“Heroin” is a great song…but I also happen to like pretty much everything by Lana Del Rey…so this one gets a little tough. It borrows an incredible amount from her hit “Blue Jeans” indirectly, not in sound so much as pattern itself. Normally…that’s not going to be too much of an issue as most vocal-flows are still going to feature lyrics that are different enough to make it their own. Izzy takes a very big risk here by not only creating a similar atmosphere in the music, but also the lyrical content as well. Dipping into the dark shouldn’t be exclusive territory either…but the combination, in my opinion, is way too close to what has been done. “Heroin” is a great song as well…again, I’m of the mindset that if you like that mood and atmosphere you can find in Del Ray’s music, you’re bound to like this too…it’s more of a sound you know you love and Izzy pulls it off well.

Though the opening of “Kiss Me, Kill Me” has that pulse & rhythm that is warm & familiar like “Every Breath You Take” by The Police, Izzy manages to separate herself enough from that rhythm to make this one her own. She really is walking a fine line…I like what she’s doing for the most part, but it sounds like a struggle to find the real identity of this artist on this particular time out. A couple things I thought needed a little improvement on “Kiss Me, Kill Me;” one being the pre-chorus…I know the idea is to approach this chilled out and somewhat apathetic for this beat but it almost works against her with slightly nasal tones ringing through more clearly than her sweet & beautiful ones at times within this track. My other beef is that this one perhaps relies a little too much on the hook of the chorus-lyrics. I’m just trying to imagine hitting the stage with this one…it’s not like musicians haven’t set themselves up this way accidentally before; she has a solid hook here there’s no question…but the sheer amount of repetition on that one line could very well drive her insane if it catches on and Izzy ends up performing that night after night.

She reminds me somewhat of a version of Owl City in the following syrupy-sweet song “Living In Reality.” Izzy has a very sincere way of bringing back these inviting & familiar tones to the speakers – even this song sounds somewhat familiar to me but it really is just a part of the charm of her music. Even though “Living In Reality” is more about heartbreak than anything else, she manages to sing it with contrasting & hopeful tones…there’s a little more of an 80’s rock-ballad style to this one hidden underneath…it’s all very big sounding and you can hear her rise up to the challenge of the chorus. AND…she just went ahead and did it…it HAPPENED…there’s a verified shout-out to Dawson’s Creek in this song…how can you NOT love that?

The final title-track starts out with that familiar Rihanna style once again, like somehow that lady hit-maker cornered the market on the word “Hey” somehow…

For a moment I worried a little that I was going to get through this full EP without uncovering the REAL Izzy Malik by the end…but I think she managed to break loose a little outside of the verse of this final track…I’m not saying we get a LOT of the real Izzy, but I think we do get a little in this final cut. She hits this chorus of the album’s title-track “Fire” with absolute perfection – I think she just nails this part with a massive amount of emotional impact and really lets loose the skill she has within her vocal delivery. Compared to the verse where she sounds almost a little restrained from her full 100%, she makes an incredible comeback into a truly fantastic and beautiful chorus to leave us all wanting more where that came from.

It’s a great start, but I’d expect as this artist continues to gain the confidence needed to define her style completely we’re going to hear the best music from Izzy Malik in a future not too far away at all.

Bio

At the age of 21 and fresh off the High School Nation Tour with Drake Bell and Palaye Royale where she performed to crowds of thousands of screaming fans, pop rock artist Izzy Malik has already shared the stage with superstars like the Janoskians, Sammy Wilk, Cody Simpson, and many more. She also recently toured with Richie Ramone, of the legendary punk-rock band, The Ramones. However, she’s not ready to stop there.

An artist as inspiring and uplifting as Izzy Malik doesn’t come around very often. Izzy moved to America from Pakistan at the tender age of three. Determined as a kindergartener to channel her profound story, and bring positive messaging, euphoric hooks, and a dazzling performance style to touch people, Izzy prioritized her life around her dream. At the age of 16 she released her first single "Malala" and her first self-titled EP at age 18. Now, 21, she is about to release her second invigorating EP, Fire.

Her journey to being the artist she is today began as a kindergartener when she saw Britney Spears on TV. “That was the most meaningful moment in my life, that’s when I decided to be singer,” Izzy says. By first grade, she was taking voice lessons and training nonstop to be a world-class entertainer. “I practiced every spare moment and worked hard because I knew what I had to do to make it,” Merced, California-based artist says. “I want to help kids by showing them anything is possible if they dream big, work hard, and stay true to themselves.”

Izzy has been favorably compared to such artists as Avril Lavigne, Joan Jett, and Demi Lovato. She cites them, alongside Elvis, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, and Nirvana as her influences. Though she’s a young artist and inspired by these icons, Izzy Malik has her own distinct sound. Her vibe blends beachy pop with a sweet spoonful of rock n roll, with influences ranging from urban to reggae.

Besides her sugary hooks, what also makes Izzy’s music stick is the powerful story leading up to her career. Izzy lived in a Taliban-dominated Pakistan and survived the terror and harsh conditions of a nation violently at war with itself. “I remember living there, and there were times when we couldn’t get fresh water,” Izzy recalls. “There were attacks from the Taliban. The house I grew up in was bombed recently, and one of the walls came down. My five year-old cousin was living there at the time and couldn’t understand what was happening. It broke my heart.”

Driven to make a statement about these unjust conditions, Izzy wrote what would be her first single, “Malala.” The song, and accompanying video, is a poignant tribute to Malala Yousafzai, the young woman who was shot by the Taliban for wanting an education and survived. “That story really spoke to me. Malala was two years younger than me; she could have been my cousin,” Izzy says. Not only does the song honor Malala’s boldness, it also inspires listeners to make the most of the opportunities available to them. “Sometimes we take school for granted, but we should remember that other people have to fight to get an education,” Izzy says.

Though Izzy is something of an activist for women’s rights, she wants her music to reach everyone—boys and girls—wherever they are in life. She performs songs about relationships and romance ("Beautiful Mistake", "House of Cards", "Living In Reality"), and songs you can't help but rock out to (“Neverland”, “Triple A”). Izzy also has the rare distinction of being a fine songwriter in her own right and has written nearly all of her own songs, including “Just Another Boy”, which is dedicated to Harry Styles with the music video being inspired by a dream she had about going on a date with him. “‘Just Another Boy’ came to me in a dream. When I woke up, I wrote it down as fast as I could,” she reveals. “I remember when we recorded it I was thinking we brought a dream to life!”

Her new EP, Fire, has a much more mature sound, a far cry from the bubblegum pop tunes of the debut EP. It blends cinematic alternative-pop, pop-rock, and very catchy beats. She wrote all of the songs on this EP. Now recording her first full-length album, Izzy has found her true rocker sound in her newest release "Neverland" -  a song about, you guessed it, never growing up.

Izzy performed her first gig in Merced, California in early 2014 at a charity concert to benefit cancer patients. Since then, she has shared the stage with the likes of Richie Ramone, Drake Bell, Palaye Royale, Janoskians, Sammy Wilk, Cody Simpson, and many other amazing artists as well as headlining the world-famous Viper Room and House of Blues on the Sunset Strip. Now, she plans to release a new album and to perform many more shows. Looking back on her awe-inspiring story she says: “I realized early on, if you put your mind to it and work hard, you can do whatever you want to, even if it seems impossible. I want to share that message with the world!”
