"A Rapping Angel"

Concert on the Lawn
By Jill Holly & Angela Deeb ’05

When you’re in the classroom all day, you forget how great Minnesota summers can be. The Ensemble and Songwriting departments gave us a darn good reason to sprawl out on the front lawn at Musictech College and enjoy some great music.

The Latin ensemble kicked off the noontime teaser with “Midnight Mambo,” a Brazilian Mambo with a little lunchtime sex appeal. Once Tim Kloster got his lips wet on the trumpet, along with Eric Miller on drums and Erik Lunna on congas, they proceeded to spoon feed us our dessert. The next number came from composer David Martin, who also happens to be the Latin Ensemble director. The piece, “Second Guess,” once again featured Kloster on trumpet. Filling in the solid rhythm section comes from Jesse Reimer on bass and Jack Mansk on guitar. The only thing this group was missing was a hot Latin vocalist.

At intermission our ears fell upon a rapping angel. JA4Real, also known as Joy Adesuyi, is a songwriting major. We all know her as the woman with the coordinating outfits who is always saying “hi” in the hallway. The microphone knows her as the truth teller. Her lyrics are in your face and direct. When she says, “you ain’t all that, you’re just a wanna be,” she’s not beating around the bush. JA addresses the issue of saggy pants, letting guys know “it ain’t cool.” She describes in detail, how freeing it is to be 4Real.

“Say what, when you pass by,” is about communicating. Her lyrics are spoken right to people in the audience. JA4Real has incredible stage presence, never missing a face. She looks you in the face to drive home the points she makes about life’s realities.

All in all the day was good. Watching the “Joyous” music on the campus lawn with friends, faculty, and students alike. - Jill Holly & Angel Deeb=McNally Smith Coll of Music

Bio

Joy aka Ja4real was born in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Joy Adesuyi is a 25-year-old songwriter, rapper and poet who is energetic and friendly to everyone she meets. She's right-brained dominant, so creativity flows through her veins.

She went to Musictech College and received her Artist Diploma in Songwriting. With not only songwriting but also the business side of music, she is ready to take on the world. She writes in her poem, “I Write”, “ I Write to inspire those who are down and hope I can turn their frown upside down.” She first became interested in songs and writing poetry in the eighth grade. Joy has written ever since and her work has only continued to improve. She’s a powerful lyricist and rapper as well!

She has several notable songs under her belt. One is an anthem that she dedicated to her graduating class in high school, “ 2001.” She amazed and delighted the crowd to such an extent that she had to pause, before completing her speech. This song was so well received that she was chosen to perform it three times in the same year.

Here’s what one reporter said about her and her performance at her school, on the following website, www.intunemag.com:
