"Alliston teen's song about job as gas jockey nominated in world songwriting contest"

MONTAGUE - Songwriters can find inspiration in all sorts of places.
Heartbreak, a pickup truck or the dog dying have been known to inspire many.
But for 18-year-old Jace Patkai of Murray River, it was toiling away in the local Irving gas station that struck up the chord.
"He told me what it was like sometimes having to smile and be pleasant when maybe it was a bad day,'' laughs his mother, Jolee.
"But that's how he wrote the song."
The graduate of Montague High School, now in Denmark on a Rotary exchange program, penned a tune called Cashier while working as a gas jockey.
He submitted the final version to the International Songwriting Contest before he headed to Europe and forgot about it, especially since the contest solicits entries from around the world and gets thousands and thousands of entries.
But something went right for the Alliston-raised lad who grew up exposed to a lot of music from kitchen parties to family gatherings where songs were always sung.
"He was notified he's one of the nominees in the teen category,'' said his mother, who is also a performer.
"He'll still be in Denmark when they announce the winners in April."
The guitar-playing teen told the family he's delighted to get such a nod and hopes Cashier takes home the honours when he returns to the Island in June. - The Guardian

Bio

I grew up on Prince Edward Island to the sound of kitchen parties and oddly enough the tape "Gordon" by the Barenaked Ladies. I first started writing when I was in my last year at high school. The first album entitled, "Bing Bang Bong" I did was comprised of all original songs that mingled with the folk/pop genre. It was because of this album that I was nominated for a 2009 Music PEI Award for "New Artist of the Year". My Single "Cashier", was a finalist in the 2007 International Songwriting Competition. Since the release of my first album I've been writing a lot of songs that fall into the alternative/mainstream genre. I've only every played solo so I'm not afraid to go up on stage for an hour and just have fun. I'm hoping to release an EP in the near future. I'm currently in Ottawa for university at Carleton.
