FUNERALS AND WEDDINGS

IT WAS SPRING WHEN GRANDMA BEAULAH DIED
BY SUMMER’S END MY SISTER PENNY BECAME A BRIDE
MAMA WORE HER EASTER DRESS TO THE CHURCH BOTH DAYS
PENNY’S SOMETHIN’ OLD A HANKY GRANDMA HAD CROCHETED

EACH SERVICE HAD LOTS OF THINGS IN COMMON
LIKE SOFT GLOWIN’ CANDLES AND WHISPERS OF AMEN
SPIRIT BRIMMIN’ OVER WITH ETERNITY AND HOPE
AS TWO SOULS CAME TOGETHER AND ANOTHER MADE IT HOME

FAMILIES GATHER, PEOPLE CRY, LACY VEILS, BLACK TIES
PRETTY FLOWERS, AMAZING GRACE
PREACHER PRAYIN’ KEEP THE FAITH
MIRACLES FLOATIN’ UP TO HEAVEN
THAT’S HOW IT IS AT FUNERALS AND WEDDINGS

I SAT THERE QUIETLY THINKIN’
‘BOUT ALL THE MEM’RIES PASSED DOWN WITH GRANDMA’S RING
AND I REMEMBER DADDY’S FACE AS HE WALKED THROUGH THE DOOR
TOUGH AS NAILS I’D NEVER SEEN HIM IN TEARS BEFORE

FAMILIES GATHER, PEOPLE CRY, LACY VEILS, BLACK TIES
PROMISES TAKEN TO THE GRAVE
SOME SECRETS BURIED, SOME SECRETS SAVED
FORGIVING AND FORGETTING
THAT’S HOW IT IS AT FUNERALS AND WEDDINGS

RELATIVES AND FRIENDS I HADN’T SEEN IN SO LONG
JOINING HANDS IN PRAYER WAS LIKE HOLDING HANDS WITH GOD

FAMILIES GATHER, PEOPLE CRY, LACY VEILS, BLACK TIES
I LOVE YOU’S SEALED WITH A KISS…
EVERY HEART IS MELING
THAT’S HOW IT IS AT FUNERALS AND WEDDINGS

WATER

Written By: Jackie DiPillo & Lisa Chamberlin

WATER

JUST WASHED MY MAKEUP OFF
I FEEL SO FRESH AND CLEAN
GOODBYE PAINTED FACE I SHOW THE WORLD
TIME TO LET MY SKIN BREATHE
WHEN I LOOK IN THE MIRROR I REALLY DO LIKE WHAT I SEE
AND FOR THE NEXT FEW PRECIOUS HOURS I FEEL BARE AND REAL AND FREE

AND IT'S AMAZING WHAT A LITTLE WATER DOES
SO CLEANSING, A COUPLE SPLASHES, THAT'S ENOUGH
STRIPPED TO THE NAKED TRUTH, IT FEELS SO GOOD, BEHOLD I'M ALL BRAND NEW
WHEN THE DAY IS DONE THERE'S NOTHIN' LIKE STARTING OVER
WITH A LITTLE WATER

FROM NEWBORNS TO GRANDPAS
TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO OR THIS COMIN SUNDAY
FROM THE BANKS OF THE JORDAN, A HOSPITAL BED
OR THE CHURCH ON CHEROKEE
THEY ASK TO BE BAPTISED IN THE NAME OF THE HOLY THREE
TO WIPE THE SLATE AND CLEAR ALL SIN AWAY, INSTANTLY

CHORUS

WE ALL HAVE MASKS WE WEAR AND GUILT TO BEAR
OUR IMPERFECTIONS WILL ALWAYS BE THERE
WE CAN BATHE IN SWEET FORGIVENESS LIKE THE EARTH SOAKS UP THE RAIN
THEN BE LIKE BABIES, INNOCENT AND PURE... AGAIN

AND IT'S AMAZING WHAT A LITTLE WATER DOES
SO CLEANSING, A COUPLE SPLASHES, THAT'S ENOUGH
STRIPPED TO THE NAKED TRUTH, IT FEELS SO GOOD, BEHOLD I'M ALL BRAND NEW...
WHEN THE DAY IS DONE THERE'S NOTHIN' LIKE STARTING OVER
WITH A LITTLE WATER …YEAH YEAH
A LITTLE WATER …
A LITTLE WATER

PASSED DOWN

Written By: Jackie DiPillo & Lisa Chamberlin

PASSED DOWN

GRANDMA ROLLED HER KNEE-HIGH HOSE DOWN AROUND HER ANKLES
SHE CHEWED ON ICE RIGHT FROM THE TRAY ALL DAY TO KEEP COOL
SCRATCHED HER BACK WITH A WOODEN SPOON EVERY TIME IT ITCHED HER
FRESH BERRY COBBLER, FRIED PEACH PIES BY NOON

SHE MADE QUILTS FROM SCRAPS OF CLOTHES, WORN BY ALL HER CHILDREN
SEWN WITH LOVE AND BOUND TO SAVE A LIFETIME OF

MEM'RIES, PASSED DOWN
FROM A BACKWOODS, DIRT ROAD, BIBLE BELT TOWN
SO SIMPLE BUT STRONG
GRANDMA’S GONNA CARRY ON THROUGH ME
AND ALL THE MEM'RIES
PASSED DOWN

GRANDPA WAS A CARPENTER, HE BUILT OUR WHOLE DANG TOWN
LOADED UP HIS TRUCK AND HAMMERED DOWN WITH THE RISIN’ SUN
BUILT BRIDGES IN THE WAR HE WAS A PROUD VETERAN
ALL TOOLS AND NAILS AND SAWDUST - A JOB WELL DONE

WHITTLED SCRAPS OF WOOD INTO TREASURES FOR ALL HIS GRANDKIDS
CARVED WITH LOVE BY CALLOUSED HANDS SO WE CAN HOLD THOSE

MEM'RIES, PASSED DOWN
FROM A BACKWOODS, DIRT ROAD, BIBLE BELT TOWN
SO SIMPLE BUT STRONG
GRANDPA’S GONNA CARRY ON THROUGH ME
AND ALL THE MEM'RIES
PASSED DOWN

~SOLO~

AS I TUCK MY CHILDREN INTO BED I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER
I THANK GOD FOR EVERY DAY I GET TO SPEND WITH THEM MAKIN'

MEM'RIES, PASSED DOWN
FROM A BACKWOODS, DIRT ROAD, BIBLE BELT TOWN
SO SIMPLE BUTSTRONG
THE GREATEST GIFT I'LL GIVE TO THEM WILL BE
ALL THE LOVE THEY’LLEVER NEED
AND ALL THE MEM'RIES
PASSED DOWN
PASSED DOWN
