"Joke of the Year Winner!"

Joke of the Year winner
Posted in TONY blog by Jane Borden on January 13th, 2009
We narrowed the field of 2008’s jokers.

You chose the winner.

Congratulations, Jackie Monahan! - Time Out NY

"Joke of the Year"

Jackie Monahan is one of the nine comedians nominated for Joke of the Year. - Time Out NY

"Here TV! Hot Gay Comics"

"Monahan is by far the best of the bunch on this DVD. She’s very pretty and uses that as a comic tool. She has funny rifts on what it was like when she was in the closet (one suspects she did quite well with the lads, as she probably does on our side now). She also does some good impersonations. If anyone on this DVD is poised to break out to the larger world, a la Ellen, it’s Monahan." - Edge Provincetown

"Hot Gay Comics"

"here!'s latest, Hot Gay Comics Live!, .. I watched the first two eps and I have to say there was only one stand-out, Jackie Monahan who was laugh outloud hilarious." - AfterElton.com

"New Divas of Comedy"

The annual Los Angeles Comedy Festival, onstage nightly at the Art/Works Theater in Hollywood through November 23rd, features all sorts of up and coming comedic talents. Among them is Jackie Monahan, whose comedic insights are worth a lot more than the modest ticket prices the festival charges to see her perform.

Jackie Monahan is a local favorite at New York’s Gotham and Caroline’s on Broadway. She has recently been on the road with her "LOL" tour, has an upcoming half-hour special for LOGO and a well-received podcast "Girls on Girls" on HERE network. Monahan, a Rhode Island native, grew up with the distinct goal of a career in stage comedy. Though she performed in an improv troupe and took classes at Upright Citizens Brigade, it wasn’t until friends encouraged her to step out on her own that she considered stand up comedy. Monahan still continues to write and perform sketch comedy with numerous videos accessible online, such as a very funny bit of street theater called "Babies First" and several takes on the theme of "Housewives with Attitude."

Monahan refuses to self-censor her so-called "offensive" jokes because they are funny to her. She points out there isn’t really a line in stand up that separates the acceptable from the un, because there are comedians who can make anything funny. Jackie, however, admits that fatal illnesses are the one arena she has yet to explore. "Those jokes haven’t come to me, and I guess there’s a reason for that."

Monahan, when asked if she has always been open about her sexuality in her stand up commented that she didn’t come out for a year until she was asked to perform at "Closet Cases," an "Out" show where she wrote jokes about being gay specifically for the event. Realizing the jokes went over really well, she then incorporated some of them into her act, "but there are times when I just don’t bring it up. It’s a part of what I do but not always the main focus of my sets."

- Edge Los Angeles

"The Bi-College News"
