"On Stage, Jackie Tohn Goes, and Goes...."

If Jackie Tohn lived on a park bench, she would put on shows for the pigeons.
She can't help it. Some people believe there is no such thing as a natural, but Tohn is wired to entertain.
The NY native has been that way ever since she can remember, and she can't stop now.
By the time she was nine, she was auditioning. At 12, she landed a role on the TV sitcom, "The Nanny", playing a young Fran Drescher. She's done a TV pilot almost every year since she was 16, and countless television episodics.
At 21, a friend handed her a guitar and showed her three blues chords. "I went home and wrote song after song just using those three chords," she says.
Two albums later, Jackie plays shows both big and small all across the country.
On stage, she's a cross between Bette Midler (only better looking) and Lauryn Hill.

"Find A Place To Stand With Jackie Tohn"

Jackie Tohn. The Tohnerino. The Tohnmeister. The Tohnster. The Tohnorama. Makin’ muuuuusic. I swear if this girl was a lumberjack instead of an entertainer there’d be no more trees.

To simply call Jackie Tohn a singer/songwriter would be like describing the Rocky Horror Picture Show as a musical. It’s true, but dreadfully misleading. Energy Plus with an affinity for theatrics, little miss facial expressions is a freak for flair-- all affects are welcome, and style is more of a fluid concept, rather than a defining characteristic.

The local sings with the power of at least four or five human beings (and i still get the feeling she’s holding back), shes a natural storyteller on stage, she’s gorgeous and she knows it, and she writes songs about men clothing and fish. Her music is pretty pop with a twitch; a paradox of vulnerability and arrogance, honesty and exaggeration, swagger and silliness. Sounds like the perfect woman, doesn’t it?

Tonight she is celebrating the release of her new CD, Beguiling, with a performance at the Hotel Cafe. While this album is clear accomplishment-- Velvet Coat and Places I Can Stand are mind melters -- listening to Miss Jackee (no relation) solely on a recording would be akin to watching a Jello commercial and calling it dessert.

Live is this child’s medium. And until she gets a team of NASA professionals willing to take her to outerspace in an attempt to capture the massive magic of her sound, you best be attending the up close and close version. - LA.com

The Player: Jackie Tohn, vocals, guitar.

Material: If you combine the songwriting skills of Laura Nyro, the gutsy earthiness of Janis Joplin, and the cool, bohemian style of Ricki Lee Jones, you'll have some idea of Jackie Tohn. And, tho some may think those references are dated, you have to go back that far to find artistry this good.
Even when covering Michael Jackson's "Beat It", or singing a ditty about a tittie-bar, this artist is innovative. One song about a breakup, which includes the entire dialogue verbatim, is sheer genius. Smart, insightful and in-your-face, Tohn's acoustic rock material is utterly compelling.

Musicianship: Tohn's command of her guitar is striking, and is as expressive as her voice. From low, guttural murmurings to sweet purrs, Tohn's vocals are some of the most enchanting you're likely to hear. She is a dramatic vocalist but not too much so. She adds just enough passion in her voice (and playing) so that her listeners can absorb the feelings behind her songs.

Performance: This artist totally captivated the crowd. In fact, she got the audience to participate in, not one, but two, sing-a-longs. When she dedicated a song to her dad, her between song banter was just as effective, and generated a love that consumed the room. By the end of her set, the audience was so enraptured that Tohn received a standing ovation that lasted well over a minute.

Summary: This young artist is a star in the making. Jackie Tohn has a special gift and there are not many like her. So, while she's still paying her dues, try to catch her when you can. If you wait too long, it may very well cost you much more. - Music Connection Magazine
