Jack Sparks

 Daly City, California, USA
BandPopAdult Contemporary

I am primarily a songwriter and have written songs in a number of genres including: pop, adult contemporary, rock, country, Christian, Celtic, jazz and more. My dominant style is the romantic ballad.

Biography

began writing music when I was thirteen (1970) although I had been playing guitar since I was eight years old, inspired by the British Invasion bands and other varied & rich musical influences of the mid-sixties. The first two albums I owned were Simon & Garfunkel's Parsley, Sage,Rosemary & Thyme and Bookends. I didn't actually own them, they were my sister's. I merely appropriated them and then, I played the grooves out of them! (I still have them)

I started out thinking of myself as a singer/songwriter, envisioning myself as possibly another Neil Diamond. (His Love at the Greek special mezmerized me) But,eventually, I put those dreams aside and continued to compose music to be performed by others.

Stylistically, I lean toward the romantic ballad, with a touch of longing thrown in. If Clive Davis, who discovered many of Barry Manilow's hits were still looking for music (IS HE?), he might be inclined to give my songs a listen.
I continue to collaborate on new tunes with Bay Area Musician Denis D'Aoust and others.

Lyrics

Decided to Stay

Written By: Jack Sparks

Never forwarded my resume
never told you who I was in the usual way
But somehow you knew anyway
And decided to stay
Decided to stay

Karaoke lines to someone else's song
we tried to sing but it just felt wrong
Somehow we just knew we'd get long
And decided to stay
Decided to stay

CHORUS
Still don't know why I love you
if it's the way that you talk or the things that you say
or if it's the funny way you smile at me
when I say
I decided to stay
Decided to stay

Rain outside but I don't mind
I'm busy seeking the secret places I find in you
fingers float across my face
and with a touch
You erase
my worried mind
And like a trusting child
I fall in love with you
Fall in love with you

CHORUS

We decided to stay
(together, Baby,)

Every Other

Written By: Jack Sparks

Every other day
I look at you photograph
Every other second
I’m thinkin’ of you,
Every other minute
I think how the time has passed

And I wonder
if I can pull through
Yes I wonder
if I can pull through

Every other sun that shines
I begin again
Every other night
I’m cryin’ for you
Every other beat of’ my heart
Will it ever end?

And I wonder…

CHORUS
Takes a lot of tryin’
To get me by again
Takes a lot of flyin’
To get me high again
Takes a lot of cryin’
To wonder why again

And I wonder…

(Slower, quieter…)

Every other song I hear on the radio
I feel I’m right back in your arms
Every other tear I still cry for you

Cuz you’re gone, Baby, you’re gone,
Yeah, you’re gone, Baby, you’re gone

Fairytale

Written By: Jack Sparks

I keep hearing fairytales
But I don't know where to put them
Happy endings that have failed
Leave me wondering what went wrong

All the songs they talk of love (they talk of love)
All the lovers have a song (have a song)
I have no castle made of dreams (oo-oo-oo-oo)
I'm not a prince, I don't belong (I don't belong)

CHORUS
She could've been the girl,
She could've been the love
But it's just a fairytale
That she left me thinking of

Babe, it's not a fairytale (How do I know?)
Take my hand oh, Babe- it's real (How can I be sure?)
Like the song I sing for you (Should I love again?)
And the love, the love I feel (It hurts too much to feel)

It's gonna be a love
It's gonna be a treasure
Babe, come and share our love
Let's share this life together

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

Yes, our song's a song of love (Yes, now I know)
And it keeps me holding on (Now I can be sure)
Babe, I want to share your dream (I can love again)
I need your love, I'm not that strong (I can trust enough to feel)

It's gonna be a love
It's gonna be a treasure
Babe, come and share our love
Let's share this life together

Oh, I believe in fairytales
And my heart knows where to put them
Now that I have found your love…
Our fairytale will come true.

Like a Flower

Written By: Jack Sparks

Like a flower, Lord, I blossom in your love
like the waves to the shore, returning to your love,
When I feel emptiness, when I feel despair
when my sorrow, Lord, is too much to bear--
CHORUS
I look to your love (I blossom in your love)
I look to your love (I blossom in your love)
I blossom in your love,
I blossom in your love
All the secrets, Lord, that you've let me see,
all the good and bad has blossomed into me
In you love, oh Lord, I know that I'm free,
In your arms, oh, Lord, I seek to be me
CHORUS
REFRAIN
When the lord, His love He brings-- every voice will sing
Savior come, his time is now--
I am free
I am free
I am free
I am free!

Mountain Girl

Written By: Jack Sparks

Midsummer night's dream
the dance of the waters in the stream
The moon and the stars seem
to be following you
my Mountain Girl

The sound of your voice in the wind
the words that the breezes send
And I know the world will never end
for my Mountain Girl
my Mountain Girl

BRIDGE
Run with me now to the hill
and dance with the stars we will
Is it the love that we feel?
my Mountain Girl

Midsummer night's dream
the dance of the waters in the stream
The moon and the stars seem
to be following you
my Mountain Girl

Donny Down

Written By: Jack Sparks

See the ship out on the sea
a way-strong wind has cut her free
The Annabelle, she's washed a-ground
Down, donnie-donnie-donnie down

Neptune's arm flung them aside
no one to hear their final cries
Every Christian man, he died,
Down, donny-donny-donny down

CHORUS
Down, donny-donny-donny down,
Down, donny-donny-donny down,
Down, donny-donny-donny down
donny-donny-donny down

In Bristol port she waits for me,
the fairest lass ye ever see,
to sixteen fathoms I am bound
Down, donny-donny-donny down

Oh, Katherine, I'll 'home no more
never again touch England's shore,
to curse the sea forever more,
Down, donny-donny-donny down

CHORUS
(instrumental interlude-)

(Male,"Donny...)

Female:

Oh, Jack, my love, where can ye be?
Too long I've searched the empty sea,
Til my own death to thee I'm bound,
Down, donny-donny-donny down"

CHORUS

The Stranger

Written By: Jack Sparks

Will-o'-the-wisp
he comes burnin' through the trees
Dark as the night,
hear the raven cry on the breeze

Today-
he's gonna steal your life away,
today-
he's gonna steal your dreams away,
today-
he's gonna steal your tomorrow away
To-day-ay
To-day-ay
Today...

instrumental
(repeat all)

Merry Christmas to You

Written By: Sparks/D'Aoust

How does Christmas feel
In your one room home?
No one to share your meal,
No glad tidings on the phone.

Close the door, go in the street,
Smile at the first person you meet.
Make the most of God’s own special day
And let me hear you say:

CHORUS:
Merry Christmas to you, though I don’t even know your name.
Merry Christmas to you, we’re really all the same.
Brothers and Sisters, Sisters and Brothers,
We’re no different from each other.
We all come so close at this time of year
When Merry Christmas is what we hear
Merry Christmas is what we hear.

Your loved ones far away,
You think of Christmas long ago.
Another lonely winter’s day,
Hear the laughter down below.

How can Christmas be like this?
The mistletoe hangs without a kiss
Ghosts of Christmas fade away
Wipe your tears and say:

CHORUS

Better Way

Written By: Jack Sparks

Today, I laugh
Just to see you walk away
But deep inside, I cry
'cause I know there's got to be a better way
Turn around,
see the clown
Laugh as his head spins 'round and 'round

CHORUS
How did we come this far?
Don't we know who we are?
How'd we run out of things to say?
Don't you know there's got to be a better way?
A better way
There's got to be a better way

Today, I laugh
Just to see you walk away
But deep inside, I cry
'cause I know there's got to be a better way
Turn around,
see the clown
Laugh as his head spins 'round and 'round
and 'round
and 'round

She Could be the One

Written By: Jack Sparks Denis D'Aoust

The full moon shining through the blind
I turn my head, and there I find
Someone lying next to me where there used to be no one

We danced into each other
Our rhythm pulled us closer, and
And for a moment there she was the one, she was the one

Pre-CHORUS
But now we’re back behind our walls
She strokes my hair, someone calls
It’s just me screaming “Pull away”
Gotta go, I just can’t stay.

CHORUS
She could be the one, the one I’ve waited so long for
She could be the one, the one I really could care for
Stop and, take a closer look
Yes, take a closer look, she could be the one

Verse 3-4
Too many choices but
Not enough time
It’s hard for perfect strangers
To make their separate lives rhyme

But with a little faith
When you get the chance
Hold her close and make one night
A lifetime dance, a lifetime dance.

Pre-CHORUS
We felt so close, she felt so right
But now it’s time for me to go
Is this goodbye or just goodnight?
How can, how can someone know?

CHORUS
She could be the one, the one I’ve waited so long for
She could be the one, the one I really could care for
Stop and, take a closer look
Yes, take a closer look, she could be the one

Mexican Rain

Written By: Jack Sparks

A bomb must've gone off somewhere near,
'cuz bouncin' down this road
I can still hear the pain
of a Mexican Rain

CHORUS
Oh listen people to the rain pourin' down,
can it ever clean the face of your town
Or do you cry
When it falls from on high?
It's a loving god that you fear
But as you beg for bread you wonder
If He hears the names
of those untouched by his rain

An old man sits and stares
with his hat in his hand
and beggin' for his next meal
he wonders if anyone cares
if he can feel the rain

The rain come down to darken the day
and you wonder if it can wash it away
But then it goes
and leaves the life we all know

CHORUS

You're Here Now

Written By: Jack Sparks

You're here now
you're near now
Why can't you see?
Babe, I want you here
I want you
here with me

I love you
I miss you
I need you now
Babe, why can't you feel it?
Why can't, why can't you see?
You're my girl
you're my wife
my lover, my life

Babe, I want you here
Why can't, why can't you
hear me when I tell you
just how I feel?
Tell me that you understand
tell me, tell me it's real

In the morning in the night
how I long just to hold you tight
but all I feel now is the cold
I keep hanging on
I just can't be told

You're here now
you're near now
Why can't you see?
Babe, I want you here
I want you here with me,
You're my girl
you're my wife
my lover, my life
Babe, I want you here
Why can't, why can't
you hear me when I tell you
just how I feel?
Tell me that you understand
Tell me
tell me it's real.

You Don't See Me

Written By: Jack Sparks

You don't see the moonlight when I show you
you don't hear the music when I sing
You don't share the dreams that I own
And when we're alone
you don't see me
And when we're alone
you don't see me

We had our share of laughter
in the good times
But smiles can't hide the space between
The future wasn't ours
it was yours and mine
And all our tomorrows
they don't mean a thing
And all our tomorrows
they don't mean a thing

BRIDGE
I tried so very hard to show you
the kind of man I tried to be
It's been so very hard to show you
you just don't see
you just don't see
you just don't see
you just don't see

REPEAT 1

Restless

Written By: Jack Sparks

Your head hits the pillow
but it bounces right off
You're dying for sleep
but you never get enough
Thoughts keep a-racin'
voices screamin' in your head
You find yourself thinkin'
you'd be better off dead

CHORUS
Cause you're restless, restless, restless
that's what you are

When you woke up he was gone,
didn't say goodbye
Didn't say where he was goin'
no, he didn't say why
Now you're left witha burnin'
that you can't seem to fill
So you take it to the streets
with looks that kill

CHORUS
Another pair of arms
another backseat of a car
another dirty, dark room
but you've gone too far
You're givin' 'way your body
but you're gettin' nothing back
You're tryin' to fill your soul
Bur you forgot to pack

And you're still restless (Girl, you are so)
restless (Girl,you are so)
restless- that's what you are (repeat)

It's Romance

Written By: Jack Sparks

It's all gone now
it's romance
Just like a song now
Gone with a glance
It's all wrong now
I just can't dance
It's all gone now
it's romance

While I was singing
it flew away
No bells are ringing
my wedding day
What the future's bringing
I just can't say
I'll just be winging
on my way

You said you loved me
My heart was aflame
blue skies above me
Life was a game
Now you don't think of me
things are so tame
It's all gone now
it's romance

Time passed so quickly
I was alive
I felt all prickly
from nine to five
A mule could kick me
I'd give no jive
My queen had picked me
from the hive

But
It's all gone now
it's romance
Just like a song now
Gone with a glance
It's all wrong now
I just can't dance
It's all gone now
it's romance

It's all gone (la-la-la-la)
it's all gone (la-la-la-la)
It's all gone (la-la-la-la)
it's all gone.

Take Your Time

Written By: Jack Sparks

Take Your Time
Jack Sparks 1977

Take your time
'round the hill
Take your time
only the good Lord will
Take your time
but don't be still
Take your time but don't take mine
I see it there
in your eyes
I see it there
behind your thin disguise
big as life and
twice your size
I see it there
it's the expression of a child

CHORUS
Take your time but don't take mine
I'm still lookin' for my sign
I-have-only
one life to live
one dream to give

Everything running wild
everything is the expression of a Child
a paradise man has defiled
I see a tear on the expression of a child

CHORUS
