"Voyage Interview With Jaclyn Bell"

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaclyn Bell.

Hi Jaclyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a Kansas City native. Growing up here, I really fell in love with singing at a young age. When I was very young, I was diagnosed with dyslexia, which explained why I was having trouble in school. Then my parents decided to homeschool me because the education system back then wasn’t as good as it is now for people diagnosed with dyslexia. With that, they also put me in singing competitions, choirs, vocal training, and tons of other music activities and I knew from a young age I wanted to do music the rest of my life.

I really connected with music because it allowed me to express myself in ways that were too difficult to put into words. Also, having anxiety, it really began to be a comfort for me and a place where I could go and just tune everything out and just write down my thoughts, feelings, and experiences and begin to make sense out of all of them.

I started writing my own music when I was in high school, in fact, one of the first songs I ever wrote was on my first EP, “Memories”, and the song was “We’ll Never Know”. After high school, I had some training in audio engineering in Phoenix, AZ. And after a while, I was able to record my EP project “Memories” in Nashville, TN, in 2018. Getting that experience under my belt was incredible and I got to work with some really amazing people.

In 2019 I wanted to really dig in and pursue a full-time career in music. I decided I wanted to make an album, so I recorded a full album here in Kansas City, the album is called “Wanna Be Mine”. Afterwards, I put my band together and we began playing here. Most of us have been playing together for more than 10 years on and off through different venues, events, and churches which we met through. It’s great getting to play with people who are also some of my best friends. It’s really amazing to get to create and work with people as passionate as you are about art and music.

We began getting a lot of really good traction and making connections here, then COVID hit and everything shut down.

It was pretty devastating for a while not having any work. Which forced me to kind of reinvent how I looked at my career in music. So, I decided I built a studio in my home and pretty quickly began working with DJs and producers remotely, as well as getting into audiobook reading.

My band and I have been getting picked up again now that everything is opening back up. We are really excited about the future and have a lot of plans and projects we want to do. I hope you all stay tuned and enjoy it just as much as we do!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting from the ground up, a large struggle is that my band and I didn’t really have many connections from the start. There’s no user guide on how to start music in Kansas City. We’re not booked through an agency or anything, we have nobody helping us. It’s 100% me and my band trying to get traction, booking, and making connections. We’re trying to get into every avenue we can to meet the right people and connections to get us to the next step! Kansas City has been incredibly receptive though everywhere that we’ve played live. Also, the radio stations KKFI and the Bridge giving me radio plays has been a warm welcome!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve been fine-tuning my voice since I was a child. What sets me apart from others I think is how hard I’ve worked my vocal technique and becoming cohesive with my band. I’m proud of my work, and I absolutely love recording. But when I get on the stage with my band, I really feel like it is where I’m supposed to be and it’s something that I’m incredibly proud of. We’ve all worked really hard in not just being musicians who play together but being an actual band.

Just to give a huge shout-out to my band. Our rhythm guitar player and backup vocalist, Justyn Renkoski is incredible at what he does rhythm-wise and vocally. We’ve worked really hard at harmonies and being able to sync up together. Our lead guitar player and cellist, Cale Cindric, is absolutely phenomenal and can pick out leads, and can absolutely shred on his guitar. Our bassist, Marshall Taylor, keeps us all on point, we really couldn’t do anything we do without him. From his bass playing to his reaching out to book venues and being our point of contact for that, he’s unreal with the amount of stuff he keeps up with. And last but certainly not least, our fantastic, driving-us-forward drummer, Dillon Whitney, is the best drummer I’ve ever played with. He’s the glue that keeps us all together!

I’m so proud of my band and everything that they bring to the table! These guys are so talented and I really love working with them and their passion.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Being a Kansas City native, I’ve absolutely loved the culture, community, and sense of midwestern hospitality everyone has. There’s a blooming music community here which is something I love. Everyone wants to help each other out. However, it’s also still developing and maturing, so it can be a little difficult to figure out who to talk to when you need to get something done. Everyone is working really hard in getting the music community thriving here and it’s amazing to see. - Voyage KC

"Johnson County Library Jaclyn Bell Interview"

Kansas City-based singer-songwriter Jaclyn Bell described her music as a cross between Kelsea Ballerini, Paramore and Chvrches, a sound she's been cultivating since she was 17. Her debut album, Wanna Be Mine, is a well-produced showcase for a voice that seems tailor-made for big audiences. We are fortunate to share an interview with Bell about her new album, her writing process and what's ahead.

My name is Jaclyn Bell. I’m a local Kansas City singer-songwriter. My music is a blend between a lot of different sounds. Hints of Kelsea Ballerini, Paramore, and Chvrches.
