Jacob Merlin

 Portland, Oregon, USA
BandR&BFunk

Jacob Merlin is a fresh new sound combining funk, pop, rock, and jazz with a tight horn section that reminds us of Tower of Power and the original SNL band! Energetic and memorable, this group's performance is anything but average, and will leave you reeling for more!

Biography

Jacob Merlin is a Portland Native who learned to tickle the ivories at the wholesome age of four. Brought up on both classical and jazz standards, Jacob began to develop his music ability in composition, orchestration, and performance throughout his high school and college years. In 2000, Jacob moved to Nashville and immersed himself in the city’s music scene. With a newfound confidence and exposure to the music industry, he returned to Portland to start a band of original funk and rock inspired music. He found a city teeming with local talent and ready for something new.
Establishing his base and his brand, JM has worked with many charities and organizations from all over the Pacific Northwest. He’s performed at benefits for Doernbecher’s Children’s Hospital, Abertina Kerr, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Race for the Cure, and many others. Recently, the band shot a music video with the Portland Trail Blazers as they performed their version of the Blazer’s theme song! Jacob has also worked with bands The Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Storm Large, Tim Reynolds, and Mic Gillette, and has worked with organizations like the Portland Winterhawks, KINK FM, KMHD FM, KGON FM, and radio stations up and down the west coast as well as being featured on CBS’ Live Studio 6. Last summer, the JM band broke into Seattle and was featured in the Seattle Examiner after performing for the Bite of Seattle, one of the city’s largest festivals.
Jacob Merlin’s show is an experience that you have to see to believe. With the traction they have in the Northwest, they are quickly branching into new markets and finding new fans across the country. It’s no stretch to say that Jacob Merlin will be a household name and we will say, “I knew him when…”!

Lyrics

Donut

Written By: Jacob Merlin

Pretty little puzzle pieces pick apart my brain,
A sprinkle of color coats the candy it contains,
Innocence so sweet my teeth could almost rot away,
To taste of you is to tempt my nerves and to throw my life away.

But, you keep me runnin'
So I can somehow prove
That I'm not the one failin'
That the sugar comes from you

Fill me up for hours till my tummy starts to ache,
You are just a small stain, a blight the will sustain no matter what I take
Me on that troubled path where my taste buds often bloom,
You may own my need for sweets but this heart just aint for you.

But, you keep me runnin'
So I can somehow prove
That I'm not the one failin'
That the sugar comes from you

Oh that little bit of sugar comes from you

Aint it just so satisfying to leave your guard down,
And then begins a friendship that you can't drown,
Just one bite and you might fly for a time,
But soon you'll see that sweetness be the chain that holds you tight.

But, you keep me runnin'
So I can somehow prove
That I'm not the one failin'
That the sugar comes from you

Oh that little bit of sugar comes from you

Cover Me

Cover Me

In the dark in the space between the grace that comes from you,
What remains I wish could not be seen,
And it's the truth I'm clinging to and at least I have the chance to choose,
Whether I should hold fast or be falling free...

So cover me,
Oh Lord,
Cover me.

I can't see why it has to be that the little things would capture me,
Why I won't walk but I'd rather run,
A fool before his time will find his feet will fail him slowly,
Losing all to iniquity...

So cover me,
Oh Lord,
Cover me,
Oh Lord,
Cover me.

I take a leap and swim across the deep the shoreline's fading,
And with every stroke I seem to know that sooner or later my strength with evade me,
But I dive in because I need to know how far I'd go for the truth.

Now can't you see it's not what I believe that bares hypocrisy,
It's love it's grace it's simplicity,
Now for a few before we're through I'd like a chance to change your view,
And show you a love that you'd never see...

So cover me,
Oh Lord,
Cover me,
Oh Lord,
Cover me.

Change of Sorrow

Written By: Jacob Merlin

Change of Sorrow

Born to a simple mind that lacks the faith,
And with such little time I've got to shed all my disgrace,
Slapped down I turned around and found the world's an empty stage...

Chorus

Can I count on you,
To shed a little light,
Can I count on you,
To make all these things right,
Can I count on you,
To change what I see,
Can I count on you,
To make a change in me.

Some folks got sorrows boy them chains you can't mistake,
Oh there's no mistake,
For one to see a lifetime son you have to have a heart that breaks...

Chorus

Oh I know there'll be some sorrows someday,
I don't mind the world sometimes,
When you find on every side there's no escape,
I know where to go...

Now here's that final word and you've seen how you've been played,
Oh you've been played,
And though it sounds absurd all of your debts have been repaid...

Chorus

Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on,
Can I count on you,
To make a change in me.

Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on,
Can I count on you,
To make a change in me.

Can I count on you,
To make a change in me.
Can I count on you,
To make a change in me.

Madness

Madness

Creep in through the window,
Night’s icy hands provoke your memory.
Seep in through the shadows,
Black magic loves a little company.

Come to the madness,
Leave your reality far behind,
One step forward,
Breathe deep and pray for peace of mind,
Won’t you pray for peace of mind?

Seep in through the shadows,
You might make a stand and get down on your knees,
But he’s here and he won’t go,
His happiness feeds upon your misery.

Come to the madness,
Leave your reality far behind,
One step forward,
Breathe deep and pray for peace of mind,
Won’t you pray for peace of mind?

Creep in through the window,
Night’s icy hands provoke your memory.
Seep in through the shadows,
Black magic loves a little company.

Come to the madness,
Leave your reality far behind,
One step forward,
Breathe deep and pray for peace of mind,
Won’t you pray for peace of mind?

You’re weak and you can’t breathe,
Oh misery come and play your game with me.
You’ll see but you can’t be,
All that’s coming on to me, it’s coming on, coming on to me…

Muddy Right Foot

Muddy Right Foot

Chains will tie, will tie me up inside… don’t mind,
Leave all your worries behind and get yourself to dancing.
This true cool is breakin’ on through, break the rules… ‘cause I’m new,
All you kings and queens must step aside ‘cause I’m breakin’ the walls where you…

Hide… Come on ‘cause I’m feeling alive,
And I feel like dancing, yes...
Yes I feel alive and I feel like dancing.

Think you can walk right in, well it ain’t that simple…you gotta slide,
Fancy how your feet are now feeling fickle,
Well come on and just let it…

Ride… Come on ‘cause I’m feeling alive,
And I feel like dancing, yes...
Yes I feel alive and I feel like dancing.

Look at you, now look at me… our dance card’s free,
Step to the left, now then step to the right,
Come on let yourself…

Confide… Come on ‘cause I’m feeling alive.
And I feel like dancing, yes...
Yes I feel alive and I feel like dancing.
Do I, yes I feel like dancing…

Hammerhead

Written By: Jacob Merlin

Hammerhead

Excuse me for the urgency,
But inside my head I’m fed with the dread of altered frequencies.
With a slam of my hand,
I want to rearrange almost change all the ways you would pay for such simplicity.

But no it’s so unconventional to try and put your feet on the line,
Go ahead and put your fate in the race,
Knowing that you’d rather be dead,
Than be a Hammerhead.

You your gonna crash into the tines, lines undefined,
You’ll see it’s true,
A ball pinned baby doesn’t need his eyes to find,
The inner peace he needs.

But now it starts, you know it’ll each you alive,
And you will have to decide whether you can live with all the breaks and mistakes,
Knowing that you’d rather be dead,
Than be a Hammerhead.

Hammerhead…

No I don’t belong, no no…
No I, I don’t belong, no no…

Pardon me for parting it’s not like me to be so two dimensional,
But the craving’s unchanging and maybe I’m flailing,
While waiting and wading within a sea of crashing intervals.

But no it’s so unconventional to try and put your feet on the line,
Go ahead and put your fate in the race,
Knowing that you’d rather be dead,
Than be a Hammerhead.

Hammerhead…

No I don’t belong, no no…
No I, I don’t belong, no no…
But the craving’s undeniable.

You’re gonna see you’re gonna believe,
All, it’s all apart of me,
You’re gonna change your ways,
You’re hear, you’re gonna fear,
All that comes to ear will be the bane of your days.

Monster

Written By: Jacob Merlin

MONSTER

The problem here,
Is that you don’t have enough shoulder,
To carry the weight of fate…
Of this monster.

Claws dig deep,
And the pain comes cheap,
Up from underneath your covers.

Redness seeps,
Into the fabric of magic,
That just…
That just used to be hunger.

Chorus 1

You and I no longer see eye to eye,
I’m through with trying to prove it’s you hiding in the night.
Under the sheets I weep, it’s creeping up on me,
No one believes the child who’s crying out for his mommy…

Monster…
Yeah…
Monster….

Verse 2

You thought the ride was over,
And your flashlight revealed every corner,
He keeps you spinning and beginning to stumble,
He’ll unleash the demons that used to keep you humble.

Chorus 2

No, you can’t leave,
I’m strong and you’re weak from fighting,
No one, but me,
Can save you from a life of searching,
Believe, this creed,
And with your muffled screams,
Survive your pain, your pain,
I’m here to feed your dreams.

Monster…

Art Of Deception

Written By: Jacob Merlin

Art Of Deception

It’s clear I’m not needed here,
I’m talking to a face made of stone,
Rap all you want, there’s no one home.

Don’t fight it your head is sided,
I can ease all your troubles I can ease your load,
But there’s no one home.

You say you know all,
But beneath every breath’s another fabrication.
You’ll grow to find, lying,
No one needs anyone whose art is in deception.

The art of deception,
Make them believe what you need,
The art of deception

I’m done appealing; I’m done dealing,
But you could never leave well enough alone,
And still there’s no one home.

You say you know all,
But beneath every breath’s another fabrication.
You’ll grow to find, lying,
No one needs anyone whose art is in deception.

The art of deception,
Make them believe what you need,
The art of deception

All the lights surround you and leave you blind,
Now it’s easy to see the change in your eyes.

Now that it’s over and we’re left sober,
I will never let you believe you’re all alone,
You see I’m always home.

You say you know all,
But beneath every breath’s another fabrication.
You’ll grow to find, lying,
No one needs anyone whose art is in deception.

The art of deception,
Make them believe make them believe,
The art of deception
The art of deception
The art of deception
Make them believe

Deja Vu

Written By: Jacob Merlin

Déjà vu

I work each day just like any other man,
I earn my pay to live as easy as I can,
I see no point, why do I bust my ass,
Light that joint, cause I’m just trying to relax.

Déjà vu has got it’s grip on me,
Am I the victim of monotony?
Each day I want something to change,
Why do we, why do we do the same old s#!t, just a different day?

Gridlock ‘till five, I bet I’ll bump them bumpers baby,
If I’m still alive I’ll get home before I’m eighty,
When I reach through your door hand me that gin and T,
Let’s drink some more ‘cause why the hell should I need sleep?

Déjà vu has got it’s grip on me,
And then am I the victim of monotony?
Each day I want something to change,
Why do we, why do we do the same old s#!t, just a different day?

Gridlock ‘till five,
If I’m still alive,
When I reach through your door now baby hand me that gin and T,
Let’s drink some more ‘cause why the hell should I need sleep?

Déjà vu has got it’s grip on me,
Am I the victim of monotony?
Each day I want something to change,
Why do we, why do we do the same old…

On just a different day…

Now yesterday became today and tomorrow turns out just the same,
That’s that deja voodoo.
You breathe in breath out, stand up stand down,
Stay in between the means, give up your dreams.
Breathe in breath out, stand up stand down,
Stay in between the means, give up your dreams.
Oh no, oh no do that deja voodoo you do…

Come To Papa

Written By: Jacob Merlin

Come To Papa

Hearts will change but I can't see why,
You're the finest jewel now in my eye,
If you just tell me where to go I just might,
And you can fill this appetite.

Luck will be my lady tonight,
I'm gonna make it so very hard that you can't deny,
Something deep inside has caught your eye,
Now listen while I sing this lullaby.

Come to papa
Come to papa
Come to papa baby
Now come to me

Turn a cheek and your ear shall follow,
Thoughts of you and I so very hard to swallow,
If you just tell me where to go I will follow,
Give me a chance, give me a chance to let you know.

Come to papa
Come to papa
Come to papa baby
Now come to me
Come to papa
Come to papa
Come to papa baby
Now come to me

Hearts will change but I can't see why,
You're the finest jewel now in my eye,
If you just tell me where to go I just might,
And you can fill this appetite.

Come to papa
Come to papa
Come to papa baby
Now come to me
Come to papa
Come to papa
Come to papa baby
Now come to me
