The best kept secret in music

"A few Selections"

DOWN BEAT, May 2001
“Jacques Chanier Trio: KITE FLIGHT (LaRonde Music 001; 46:24) ***
The French bring something special to jazz--a brightness and jagged sense of joy in the moment.Chanier mines that tradition, skittering and bursting with staccato speed, luxuriating in melodic reverie, or flying right off the handle on the title tune. His accomplices, Brooke Sofferman (drums) and Thomson Kneeland (bass), play well together “ Paul De Barros

All About Jazz, November 2000
“The piano trio format gets a boost with this new recording”
“Highly recommended.” Glenn Astarita

Jazz USA, October 2000 (Short Takes)
“The disc is equal parts heart and mind.” John Barett

Jazz Review.com (Jazz at a Glance Volume 106)
“Five Stars! Excellent in all aspects! Great solo work by the entire trio. KITE FLIGHT is something to enjoy again and again!” Lee Prosser

Cadence, March/2001
“Poised midway between the telepathy of an Evans trio and the daring of Candid-era Taylor, there’s a lot to like about Chanier’s group.” Jason Bivins

All About Jazz, November 2000
“Chanier’s ensemble succeeds through the use of three factors: (1) exceptional musicianship, (2) creative starting-point compositions, and (3) cohesion.” Jim Santella

All About Jazz, November 2000
“The trio exhibits an excellence in all things creative, covering the history of piano jazz from 1950 to 2000. Chanier’s trio is exuberance.” Mark Corroto

Feeling a bit camera shy

Pianist Jacques Chanier is one of the leading lights of the Boston jazz scene, with a firm yet lyrical style that recalls players such as Kenny Werner and Alan Pasqua. Born and raised in Paris, Chanier relocated to the U.S. to study at Berklee College of Music. From there he springboarded into a jazz career, performing with local musicians in many Boston venues. In 1995 he began an association with the Henry Cook Band, recording two albums with the group on the Accurate label. Kite Flight, Chanier's 2000 debut as a leader, is a polished, all-original trio disc featuring bassist Thomson Kneeland and drummer Brooke Sofferman.
